Summary

Battle royale games like PUBG and H1Z1 give emphasis to realism and skill in terms of gunplay. Meanwhile, Fortnite favors fast reflexes and one’s ability to engage in building battles, constructing ramps, walls, and platforms like it is second nature. All three games have varied appeals, each providing a different experience in a now-bloated battle royale genre with countless titles.

Realm Royale, formerly named Paladins: Battlegrounds, is Hi-Rez’s different take on the genre. Much like the others, it provides something new enough to be fairly unique: it is a hero-based shooter, with classes and characters based on the studio’s main game, Paladins. Think of Paladins, just set on an extremely large map with a hundred other players hoping to take you and your squad out. With it being out on early access in Steam, is it another battle royale experience you would want to go through or are you better off skipping it? Let’s find out what it has to offer:

Plotline

Realm Royale doesn’t possess a coherent story, considering that it’s solely a multiplayer battle royale experience. However, we can safely say that the lore is in development much like the main game. Note that Hi-Rez is great at crafting up stories and character backgrounds. For example, the champions in Paladins have their own backstories, making for good reading material.

Gameplay

The gameplay starts when you choose from five distinct classes: Engineer, Assassin, Mage, Warrior, and Hunter. After the selection is done, the game starts much like any other battle royale title: you dive into the battlefield on an airship. After you hit the ground, the gameplay loop of searching for loot like equipment, weapons, and healing items starts. The island is massive, with various locations to visit and loot. With that in mind, Hi-Rez fixed navigation concerns by introducing mounts - or horses - into the mix. These let you travel and move around the map faster.

The fights are fast-paced and can quickly turn into button-mashing contests if you don’t exactly know what you’re doing. To avoid this, take a look at your character’s abilities, which are dependent on what your class is. Warriors are straightforward fighters and powerful damage dealers. Meanwhile, Engineers can construct or summon shields to protect themselves and turrets to do the job of damage-dealing for them. Hunters are lethal bow-and-arrow (and sniper) specialists while Assassins can flick in and out of battle in an instant. Finally, mages can shoot fireballs, and manipulate the environment for both offense and defensive purposes.

Realm Royale’s looting system is an outstandingly different one. The class system presents a problem: if you’re a Warrior, what use would a Mage’s equipment be? Hi-Rez solved this dilemma by introducing the shards and forge system. Unwanted weapons and equipment can be turned into shards to be used on the game’s various forges which can be used to create higher-grade weapons and abilities. Unfortunately though, it takes time for the forges to produce something and when they are in the process of doing so, they do it loudly. In turn, other players will certainly hear you and in turn, may take aggressive action in order to steal your loot.

This system rewards aggressive play, and also presents a few strategic implications. Before using a forge, why not set up a counter-ambush to play offense while defending your position? Why attack the forge immediately when you can wait for other teams or players to do so for you? It’s a well-thought-out mechanic, and it’s certainly one of the best in the genre.

In H1Z1, if you get killed, you’re out of the game, while in Fortnite and PUBG, you will crawl into the ground, waiting for the 30-second time limit so you can return to your real form. Real Royale sets themselves apart by turning you into a chicken. Yes, a chicken. You can still run around and flee to your friends in your powerless state. And it’s just hilarious to see players chasing down and trying to slaughter chickens to get their loot.

Community

Considering that Realm Royale is an all-new game, the community is fairly active with its player-base doing all they can to learn the game’s basics. It has a community on Steam and Reddit, so finding friends to play with in Squads and Duos will be quick and easy. In addition, people are still newbies, so you can grow and learn the game’s basics with the other players as it evolves.

Graphics/Sound

In terms of presentation, Realm Royale’s art style is geared towards Paladins, although it draws comparisons with Fortnite. It is a little cartoony (as it should be), but nevertheless, everything is attractive to the eye, especially when fireballs and bullets start flying. Currently, there are no noticeable gaffes like framerate drops, and we hope it stays the same in the future.

Conclusion

Overall, Realm Royale is definitely a game all the fans of the battle royale genre need to try out. It provides a totally different experience compared to other titles, and though you’ll be faced with entirely new gameplay concepts, it’s still a BR game at its core. Pick a class, choose a play style, and survive the battles on the realm in ways you never thought possible.
