Developed by Alder Games and published by Legacy Games, Pearls of Atlantis: The Cove is a bubble (or, in this case, pearl) match-3 shooter with a non-traditional approach to the genre. Unlike traditional bubble shooters, where you must destroy all the bubbles or reach a score threshold, finishing a level only requires matching a few specific ones. Apart from the main gameplay, there’s a decorating element and a fun story with quirky characters perfect for players of all ages.

Plotline

In Pearls of Atlantis: The Cove, you will accompany Kaia, an adventurous mermaid, and her snail friend Nauty. As a resident of Atlantis, you will venture into a once glorious hidden part of the city called the Cove of Memories and endeavor to restore it. However, along the way, you will encounter other characters and perform tasks, like helping a human being whose submarine is trapped under a pile of rubble.

Without delving into spoiler territory, the game provides a rather unique and fun tale that is safe for kids yet enjoyable for adults.

Gameplay

If bubble shooting games are considered casual experiences, Pearls of Atlantis: The Cove takes them up a notch. The game prioritizes ease and smooth gameplay, a far cry from its peers, providing an arduous challenge as levels progress. Although it increases in intensity and difficulty as you reach more advanced levels, experienced players are okay with beating its many levels.

The core of Pearls of Atlantis: The Cove’s gameplay is the bubble, or in this case, pearl shooting mechanics. Like all the games in the genre, you will be offered a limited number to drop on platforms containing pearls of various colors. You can only fire one at a time, but thankfully, you can easily switch between two via a right click with a tap on the touchscreen if you’re playing on mobile.

One thing that sets Pearls of Atlantis: The Cove apart from its peers is how players can finish every level. Instead of clearing out all the pearls in every level, you must only match specific ones marked with a charm symbol. The fewer pearls you drop, the higher your overall score. Moreover, you don’t have to worry about leftover pearls; the game also adds them to your score.

Plus, the game’s physics feels relatively advanced. Dropping pearls makes the others move realistically, so placement and planning play a crucial role here, especially if you’re aiming for multiple combos or trying to hit a hard-to-reach charm. In a way, the game's physics are a notch above its peers. In addition, you can also use powerups like the hammer, or aim to have multiple combos to increase your overall score, and drastically shorten levels. Unfortunately, you cannot binge-play in Pearls of Atlantis: The Cove, considering it has an energy mechanic that recharges incrementally.

Apart from the bubble shooting mechanics, the game also has decoration minigames as a side piece. You can fix and decorate parts of the Cove of Memories, sprucing it up for everyone to see. Some of these places include a statue of King Triton and the surrounding area. My personal favorite is a sunken pirate ship which was a joy to decorate and bring to life.

Community

Pearls of Atlantis: The Cove is a fully single-player experience, although it would benefit greatly from a PvP or an online leaderboard.

Graphics/Sound

In terms of presentation, Pearls of Atlantis: The Cove looks excellent on both PC and on mobile devices. Although it isn’t the best in terms of visuals, it gets the job done. With that in mind, the art direction is superb, although it would be safe not to expect Disney-esque levels in terms of character and environmental design. The game’s decoration side game gives you a good variety of options to customize the Cove of Memories according to your personal preferences. Finally, the audio design is okay-ish; there’s no voice acting, but the music fits the game’s overall themes and atmosphere.

Conclusion

Overall, Pearls of Atlantis: The Cove is your best bet if you would like to dive into a well-made and easy-to-pick-up and-play bubble shooter. With its many levels, engaging gameplay, and fun side games, it’s a game for everyone. If you are a hardcore gamer looking to relax or a lifelong casual, it’s a must-have.
