Plotline

Starland was created by the Dragon Lord and he spread life on all its surface, but that life was without a soul. The Demon King saw the land and placed souls upon it. Over time and generations these two have merged into the people of Starland. There was a pact between these two great powers to never set foot on the mortal world. However this was broken by a Mage called Ballan who summoned the Demon King into himself.

There followed a great war that ravaged the continent and it fell to the Dragon Lord and Priestess Isil to stop the Demon King, and they did but in the battle Priestess Isil was killed and the Dragon Lord turned himself into Starmoon Crystal to seal the Demons in. In the following years Isil has been renamed Lady Isil and is revered as a goddess and shards of Starmoon have started to fall to the land. And now you step out as a mercenary leader heading into a great war over the fallen and powerful Starmoon Shards.

Gameplay

When you first enter Sword Saga you are presented with the 3 classes that are available in the game. Each of which has a unique role and skill set. The Warrior is the tank class, with a 2 handed sword and the ability to dish out and absorb a lot of damage. The Mages are the only class that can heal, but they also have a lot of damage and a buff that can increase the attack of all party members. Lastly you have the Shooter, a ranged attack class that specialises in pure damage. Once you make your choice and name your character you are off to explore a huge world.

You begin by having to rescue a young lady called Angelina, the adopted daughter of a priest. Along the way you begin to discover the plotline of the game, and you are introduced to the basics of moving and fighting in Sword Saga. There is no full tutorial, instead there are flashes on the screen telling you what you need to press to complete the action. These tips are pretty useful when you start playing and will show up whenever a new feature is added.

Moving around is easy to do, you just need to click where you would like to go to, and there is also an auto pathing feature built in. What this will do is at the press of a button take you to where you need to go, whether that is a character to talk to for a quest or a monster for you to fight. You can choose to explore yourself or allow this feature to take you to the destination for you.

When you meet a person or monster to fight you are taken to the combat screen, here is where the battles take place. Taken in turns your team, and then the enemy team will take their actions whether it is attacking or casting other spells. This is where your set of skills comes in, and you begin play with your basic one. As you level up you will unlock more skills and abilities that you can use in combat. To use a skill you can click it with your mouse or press the number attached to the skill. You will always do your basic attack if the other abilities are on cooldown or not available so you always do some damage.

As well as your character there are also several mercenaries that will be able to assist you in battle, starting with Angelina who is a Mage and can heal you as well as buff you. When you play through the game you will open up more choices for characters to assist you, and they each have special and unique abilities that you can use to your advantage. These vary from a Warrior who will tank for you to a Huntress that will attack multiple targets. The characters you bring with you determine your strategy in each battle.

Outside of the battle you can also set the formation that you wish to use. You have 3 rows, with 3 positions each, so a total of 9 slots for your characters to stand in. You can pick them or follow the recommended formation, though this is not always the best one for you to use. As you have more characters you can choose to place them with your existing ones and so make the best and strongest team to defeat the enemies you have to face.

As you would expect from an MMORPG your character will gain experience and levels that determine how powerful you are. The higher your level the more skill points you have to spend, the better the items you can use and the more health and resistances you have. There is a skill tree that you can choose to spend points in, this will give you 2 more active skills and 3 passive skills which improve your character. Each skill has 5 ranks, so you can choose lots of skills at rank 1, or to make your known skills more powerful.

You can also improve your mercenaries too, by completing quests you can pick up Training Books, these are given to your mercenaries and they will increase the characters in a similar way to yourse. WIth new skills, more defences and offensive abilities. Keeping your mercenaries levels up is important as they need to be able to help you in your battles later in the game.

There is also a special ability for you as a character called Dracoguis, this is unlocked after you pick up the 4 parts of a Dragon Amulet and is a unique ability that is fueled by the Starmoon Crystals. Once unlocked you open up a dragon, that as you spend Starmoon will increase your base statistics, with each rank costing more. All of your statistics can be increased this way, and the higher your level the more Dracoguis you can have and use. Though it can be expensive to upgrade them the benefits are very powerful. You will also gain experience points for each new rank you acquire and this can add up to quite a lot.

There is also the option to join a Coalition, these are basically guilds within the game and being in one will grant you certain perks, and each Coalition has its own group experience pool. The higher the level Coalition the more you and your fellow members can get out of it. Including special items and mounts only available through this system. But also they are a social atmosphere that you can play in and enjoy, as well as take part in Coalition level aids and dungeons.

There are a couple of types of dungeon for you to explore, those that you play solo and those that you complete in a group. The solo dungeons you can try at level 5 and onwards, and they have tougher monsters but higher rewards. With your mercenaries you should be able to complete them, and if one is a little tough you can come back again with different characters or at a later level. The group dungeons require several players and do not include your mercenaries, but as characters you are more powerful and so fight tougher monsters for even greater rewards.

The layout for Sword Saga is really simple and you can easily navigate to where you need to be. The auto pathing is a nice feature but can take a little of the exploration side of the game away. When you are in a battle you can clearly see what is going on and changing or choosing the skill to use is pretty easy. However the actual strategies for defeating bosses are quite in depth and there is a lot of thought put into the system. This depth in a browser game is quite refreshing and adds a huge amount to the gameplay, while still keeping it fun.

Community

There are a lot of people that enjoy Sword Saga both inside and outside of Facebook, with a dedicated system of getting players to work together in Coalition’s for shared benefit there are a lot of them around and they are a pretty good way to get to know people. There are also dedicated forums run by the developers that are active too. While this is not one of the biggest games around there is a dedicated following for Sword Saga and the players are helpful to newbies and old hands alike.

Graphics/Sound

For a browser game Sword Saga looks pretty good, with a dark feel that somehow fits the interesting storyline. The screen can get a little cluttered with all of the optional extras like daily wheel of fortune and such, but aside from that there is a nice quality to the game. The combat is smooth and though the game is 2D there is a lot of detail in the artwork.

There is a haunting music that plays in the background, that changes depending on where you are in the game and what you are doing. Unfortunately there are no voices to the game, just sounds of victory or fighting going on in the background. But overall Sword Saga looks good and sounds reasonable when you play.

Conclusion

In the era of the free MMORPGs there are a few games that stand out above the rest, for the sheer fun that you can have while playing and Sword Saga is one of them. With a hidden depth that only really becomes apparent later in the game there is a lot of strategy involved, and with a growing player base it is easy to get into the game and see why it is so appealing. Though you can say there is nothing truly unique about Sword Saga, you can not deny that it does all of the things you want from a game very well.
