Summary
There are games that go with the flow and use gameplay loops and formulas that guarantee success. Epic Games knows this because after all, they’re the people behind Fortnite which is probably the most popular game in recent memory. Though they haven’t failed to make new additions to their flagship game, the industry continues to churn out games with the tried-and-tested “drop-loot-fight-survive” formula.
Battle Breakers isn’t a battle royale but much like the Fortnite, it innovates and delivers new yet refined gameplay mechanics. Available on Android, iOS, and on PC through the Epic Games Store, this turn-based strategy game is a breath of fresh air to the rather crowded hero-collecting subgenre. Though its gameplay loop appears way too different and even uncharacteristic, it’s extremely fun, simple to pick up, and in a way, works seamlessly. All these, paired up with high production value and hilarious dialogue, deliver quite an experience.
Thing is, will this be something you’d want to add to your backlog? Let’s check out what it has to offer first:
Plotline
Battle Breakers follows a medieval sci-fi fantasy theme which is quite weird and at the same time, is well-executed.
The story revolves around an entire planet invaded by monsters from outer space that devastated the land. The planet’s heroes swoop in to try and stop them, but unfortunately, most of them are trapped inside crystals brought about by the invasion. As a breaker, it’s your goal to rescue these heroes (who are then added to your team) and stop the tide of monsters causing mayhem throughout the land.
Instead of going for a serious theme and storyline, Battle Breakers goes for hilarity instead. The dialogue and character interactions are extremely funny and full of jokes and memes. Within a few minutes of playing, you’ll likely find yourself laughing out loud and fully enjoying the game’s brand of humor.
Gameplay
Battle Breakers’ dungeons are made up of hexagonal gems you have to tap or click (depending on the platform you’re playing in) on a sizable grid. Once you tap them, they break and reveal what’s underneath and inside the dungeon, much like a standard RPG. Inside these gems are enemies, potions, items, and coins. After tapping the gems and beating the enemies, you’ll be able to unlock the next level or proceed to the next phase. Personally, this is the first time I’ve played something like this. It’s much like one of those dungeon-crawlers where instead of picking a path or direction, you’re tasked to “break” gems.
Battles are relatively simple. Once you reveal enemies on the grid, you’ll immediately enter in combat with them. All you have to do to attack is tap on one of your characters and then tap on your opponent. To perform skills, you only need to swipe up or double-tap or click. Note that Battle Breakers follows an elemental affinities chart. Fire is weak to water yet strong against earth, while earth is strong vs water. The game has an auto-play option. The AI is fairly competent, although you’ll need to manually activate items on your own.
Battle Breakers has a robust cast of heroes and you’ll be given a few to start the game with. You’ll need to select a commander and your team composition decisions will rely on elemental weaknesses and what these characters are capable of. For example, Tessa specializes in fighting bosses, while Laric is a great frontline tank. When you buy or unlock heroes, the game lets you know what their respective roles are, enabling you to make edits to your roster.
In story and combat levels, you can automate your roster adjustments and the AI does so according to the level’s enemies’ elemental affinities. There’s also another quality of life feature that lets you upgrade heroes before diving into the levels. When your account levels up, you can choose perks, like increased HP and increased attack damage, that will affect your heroes.
The game is set in a sizable map where you select nodes and different levels. However, the map is quite large and it may be confusing to know where to go next. All you have to do to get over this hump is to simply tap or click on the “play” button. There are also areas on the map where you can craft and build things that give you new pets to aid you in battle as well as passive bonuses. There’s also the Monster Pit where you can throw unwanted characters in and you’re rewarded when they progressively reach a certain level tier.
It’s also important to note that Battle Breakers supports crossplay and cross-progression, meaning you can carry over your heroes and battle pass level and everything you’ve done in your account to other platforms. All you have to do to unlock this is create or log in via an Epic Games account. You can then carry your progression regardless if you’re playing on a desktop, on iOS or on Android.
Community
For now, the only multiplayer element the game has is being able to recruit and fight with your friends’ characters. For now, PvP still isn’t part of the equation, but we can be sure that it will be part of the game soon. Considering that it’s a newly-released game, its community isn’t as large as other games. Currently, it has a growing community on Reddit and numerous content creators have already covered the game and are creating walkthroughs and tips.
Graphics/Sound
In terms of presentation, Battle Breakers excels. Its art style is akin to that of 90s animated cartoons, comparable to the ones you regularly watch on Saturday mornings. Even the theme song feels and sounds like an action TV show kids regularly anticipate right before primetime. With that said, it is a good-looking game and though it’s a relatively small project compared to Epic’s other titles, it holds up well.
Conclusion
Overall, Battle Breakers is a must-try game especially if you’re looking for a new hero-collector. Though it’s still a little early to say that it beats its peers off the park, its fresh take on dungeon-crawling and its robust roster of heroes to collect makes it something you need to get your hands on.
