For better or worse, today’s selection of first-person - and third-person - shooters require a more tactical approach. For example, Overwatch requires a balanced team and a sound strategy, while PUBG needs players to think in advance and a few steps ahead of their opponent. Others add in non-shooting mechanics like Fortnite and Overwatch. Sure, it’s great to add variety but at the same time, these games aren’t exactly for people who want accessible games where all you do is pull the trigger, jump around, and fight in perpetuity.
Thankfully, Diabotical is an option for those looking for a game that purely involves fast-paced shooting with a few quirks depending on the game mode. It’s a throwback to the old Quake games, where all you do is move around and shoot. This free-to-play game, available on the Epic Games Store, follows a tried-and-tested formula but in a crowded space, do the Eggbots stand a chance against bigger and more established games? Will it be something you’d want to grab hold of? Well, let’s check out what it has to offer:
The days of playing FPS games that purely involve shooting are seemingly gone. You rarely see people playing games like Quake or engaging in free-for-all modes. There always needs to be a degree of strategy and teamwork involved. Options are limited when it comes to playing games where all you do is shoot for shooting’s sake.
Thankfully, Diabotical is around and manages to deliver this experience. It’s a fast-paced game where you control an Eggbot and pick up weapons from the various arenas and attempt to reduce your opponents to burning heaps of metal. There are no character skills here: all you have to do is pick up weapons on the field, along with additional health and armor, and start shooting.
Apart from the purely fun free-for-all mode, there are 15 others where you can dive in and play. Wipeout is the traditional team deathmatch mode with a respawn twist with every elimination. There’s also Arena, a 1v1/2v2 mode where players have two lives and best for those looking to put their skills to the ultimate test. Granted, there’s enough variety to make you continue playing after you’ve spent a number of hours on FFA. Plus, there are ranked modes where you can try to get up to the leaderboards.
In Diabotical, shooting is akin to the classics. There’s barely any recoil on the weapons when you’re firing and why should there be when you’re using an Eggbot?! However, this doesn’t mean that it doesn’t require a lot of skill, mainly due to the difficulty curve the weapons offer and the extremely fast movement of the bots. Apart from the recoil-less machine gun, there’s a plasma blaster, a deadly and close-ranged shotgun, a laser, and the deadly rocket and grenade launcher. Though it takes time to master every weapon’s quirks, you’ll feel at home if you’ve played other FPS games and thankfully, there are practice and warm-up modes where you can give them all a try. The movement is quite smooth, fitting the game’s fast-paced themes and its focus on shooting and dodging.
The various game maps help in letting you move freely thanks to the many portals and jump pods where you can get to elevated spaces. However, there were tendencies where I managed to get myself stuck in areas near jump pods. Some of these can be considered death traps given that they can be easily be blocked by a wily eggbot.
Since Diabotical is a free-to-play game, it has microtransactions that focus solely on cosmetics. You can add various faces, “eggshells”, sprays, and weapon attachments to your bot. It’s safe to say there are enough options to make it stand out from the rest of the player-base.
Diabotical has a thriving community on Reddit with over 12,000 people where you can discuss the game with other players. Plus, there’s also a Discord community if you’re looking for others to dive into matches with. Matchmaking is relatively fast, although most of the time, you’ll only get to play the free-for-all mode.
In terms of presentation, Diabotical isn’t on par with its peers with it looking like a game that was made early in today’s generation, but it holds up quite well. The environments and art style are varied and fitting to be a battleground for eggbots. The same can be said about the audio, with the footsteps being accurate. The game also runs fairly smoothly on a mid-ranged GTX 1060-6GB PC without any framerate drops or stability issues.
Overall, Diabotical is a well-made game perfect for gamers who want to dive into a straightforward, competitive shooter without the intricacies present in its peers. After all, you’ll only have to shoot enemy eggbots in its many maps and game modes. So, give it a shot and try to rise up the ranks!
