Summary

The demons have risen from the depths of hell and only by reuniting all the 27 powerful Rings will the world once again know peace... In this challenging and yet fun MMORPG, Blades and Rings, you’ll play the crucial role of the ringbearer (as well as the possible savior of the realm). With your mount and Ward by your side, you’ll venture to various loot-filled dungeons, participate in server boss fights, go head-to-head with other players at the arena or even band up with your guildmates and fight for the glory and honor of your guild in the “clash of titans” known as the Guild vs Guild (GvG) war. Will you succeed in ridding the world of the demonic menace, come hell or high water?

Plotline

The malevolent Spiritus has awakened the demons and as a result, has plunged the whole world into darkness. Only by reuniting all 27 Rings of power will the demons be banished and peace will return to the lands.

The poor people in Blades and Rings need your help. Play the role of the ringbearer, set off to collect all the Rings and using their power to defeat the demons that have already invaded the world!

Gameplay

In Blades and Rings, you’ll get to choose from among 2 character classes the strong and sturdy, male Warrior or the nimble and agile, female Archer. There’s another class, the Mage, that’s coming soon. You can create more than 1 character per account in this game, which is perfect for players who enjoy trying out and playing all the classes available. However, oddly, you aren’t able to return to the character selection screen to switch between characters short of exiting the game and starting it up again.

Similar to most MMORPGs, questing is one of the main ways, especially earlier on in this game, for you to level up your character. The game offers auto-pathing so you could quickly level and this is important because you can reach up to hundreds of levels in Blades and Rings. Fast leveling is key!

Not to mention, you could turn on the free Auto-Combat (A.C.) option or even the Offline A.C. (unlocked at level 60) to further hasten the leveling process, though of course, if you’re the old-school type and would prefer to play everything on your own, you can do so. It is also interesting to note that one of the main feature of the game’s combat system, its Divine form, is not included within the auto-combat system. You actually need to activate it manually for your character to transform into pretty much an almost godlike form that’s powered solely by the Rings you’ve collected.

Aside from the normal leveling quests, with time, you’ll start to unlock new quests like Bounty quests, instances or events, one after another... and boy! There are tons of stuff for you to do in this game! You could try to win a couple of goodies, namely runes that can enhance your character’s stats, by heading over to the Rune Tower. You could also challenge yourself via the Score Trial whereby you will fight incredibly adorable creatures to achieve the objective within the time limit given, or take on hard-to-kill server bosses alongside other random players.

To earn more free experience points, you may want to drop by the Demon Abyss and sweat it out a bit in a team of friends or strangers, or even by yourself. Of course, certain dungeons, like Demon Abyss, has a limit as to how many times you can enter in addition to requiring a special “entry pass”. Thus, it’s wise to make the most of the time you have in these more special instances so you could gain the most benefit from them.

Due to the game’s auto-pathing and auto-combat features, the game basically can be considered as an idle MMORPG, but if the game’s boss fights are anything to go by, Blades and Rings might be able to make a different case for itself here. Players can simply turn on auto-combat and try to take down a boss or two... and that might actually work for the first few bosses, but when you encounter more challenging bosses, particularly bosses with skills who are not shy to use them, you’ll find yourself at the edge of your seat trying to avoid getting your character killed from whatever skill the boss has.

Granted that most bosses have quite similar skills, it still doesn’t negate the amount of fun and thrill that you can get whenever you successfully and narrowly dodged getting “steamrolled” by an especially nasty boss skill.

For players who enjoy PvP more than PvE, well, Blades and Rings have some exciting PvP venues for you to duke it out on. It is unclear if the game has an arena system per se, but it definitely has open world-like PvP zones that will be unlocked at higher levels. Here, you could simply switch your PvP mode on and maybe slaughter a player or 2 just to get the ball rolling. If you enjoy team play, you might want to sign up and join a guild so you could participate in the massive Guild vs Guild wars and fight for the glory and honor of your guild.

That being said, to ensure you can actually do any of the stuff mentioned above, you will definitely need a high Combat Power (CP). There are many ways you could increase your CP and the easiest way is by leveling up and strategically assigning your free stat points to the stats you want. If you’re not sure which stats to go for, you can simply use the game’s “recommended” auto-assign feature instead.

You could further augment your character’s stats by equipping Runes. Runes of varying qualities can be obtained as loot from the Rune Tower and well... you can also unlock new rune slots by advancing through the tower too. Runes are basically stats that you can add when socketed into your Rune panel and each Rune that you equip can be further upgraded using Rune Seeds. Rune Seeds can be in turn obtained by salvaging runes that you don’t need.

Aside from directly or indirectly adding in new stats, you can also equip your hero with the best equipment that you can get your hands on. These gear items can also be enhanced using the gold you’ve earned from questing or dungeoneering, and socketed (if there are any gem sockets on the items) with powerful gems. If you’re lucky, you might stumble upon a couple of ultimate equipment which usually have several divine stats on them.

If you have any extra items that are of really high quality (epic and above), you might want to hold on to them as you’ll need it to upgrade your Ward later on and well, if the item is not bound to you, you could even try to sell them at the Market for some premium diamonds. It is also odd to note that although the mage class is not yet released, you could already obtain mage gear within the game.

Moving on, each character class will also have their own set of skills, some of which will only be available when you enter Divine mode by activating your ring. There is also a bunch of passive skills which you can unlock by collecting more Rings as you play the game.

Once you’ve unlocked your first mount, you will also get a nice CP boost, but don’t forget to keep your mount trained by using mount pills. At a certain level threshold, the mount that you get will even change its appearance.

At a later level, you’ll also gain access to your very first Ward, a pet-like creature that will aid you in combat aside from providing you with a nice stat and CP boost. It can devour items of epic or higher quality (hence, my advice for you to keep your items and to not sell them) to level up and you could even obtain Soul Dusts to promote your Ward and increase its star level.

Once you reach around the 100th level, you’ll get a taste of what’s to come by getting a free pair of Wings to put on for a limited period of time. Wings provide a huge amounts of stats that will definitely bump your CP even high up. You could get yourself a helper pet of sorts, like the Greedy Goblin who will follow you around and help you pick up dropped loot too if you like. This sort of pets will usually require you to be a VIP and have some unbound premium diamonds to spend.

There are plenty more features that you’ll be privy to, and not to mention, there are so many different zones in the world that you’ll be able to explore when you’ve reached the necessary level.

Community

To truly be a part of the game’s community, you’ll definitely need to join a guild. After all, by being a guild member, you’ll not only get to collect free game cash every day, participate in the weekly Guild vs Guild (GvG) matches, work with your guild to take down guild bosses, and complete special guild quests; you could also contribute to your guild by donating equipment and then redeem the contribution points you’ve earned for items you may want in the Guild Vault.

Graphics/ Sound

When it comes to graphics and sound, Blade and Rings almost did everything right. The visuals are stunning and the game has some very nice music. Its sound effects and animations are excellent as well.

However, the only sound-related aspect that I think the game could improve on is its voice overs. The voice acting is not exactly terrible – it’s pretty average in fact, but the thing is, one of the voice overs at the very beginning has a strong Chinese accent and that might just put some Westerners off.

Conclusion

All in all, Blades and Rings is an amazingly fun and addictive, idle MMORPG that provides plenty of automatic options for you to level up rapidly, even when you’re offline. Despite its somewhat cliché storyline, the gameplay, especially the boss fights, is thrillingly captivating and there are just so many things for you to do in this game. Blade and Rings will definitely appeal to casual MMO gamers who don’t have a lot of free time on their hands but would still like to enjoy playing a less-demanding MMO game from time to time. If you happen to fall within this category of players, or perhaps you’re simply curious, well, be sure to check the game out today! The game is now available on both Android and iOS in the Americas.
