Summary

Battle royale games are generally fun and action-packed, depending on the title. However, its formula has a few flaws. Instances wherein you encounter enemies are generally fewer compared to when you’re actually in combat. In addition, there’s also the problem of you being unable to do anything when your character has been taken out. Unless if you’re in a squad and the game you’re playing has a resurrection mechanic - like Apex Legends and Fortnite - there’s nothing left to do when you die, except spectate your squadmates and leave to start a new game.

Watchers is a top-down battle royale that tries to get rid of the dull moments and post-death vacuum by introducing a spectator or watch mode. Other than that, it plays like a classic battle royale: you pick a landing zone, loot weapons and equipment, and try to escape the storm. Its demo provides a fairly decent preview of what the game has to offer and may very well be something you’d want to try out in the future. With that said, let’s check out what it has to offer:

Plotline

Considering that it’s a multiplayer game, there’s really not much story and lore in Watchers. However, the setting is fairly unique, with characters sporting clothes you’d see people wearing in the 1940s to the dazzling 60s. The game is set in a rather large area complete with rather large cityscapes, farms, and even parks. To add to the mid-1900s setting, the areas affected by the game’s version of the “storm” are in black and white which adds to the overall immersion.

Gameplay

In terms of gameplay, Watchers is more the faster-paced battle royales. This is thanks to the camera orientation, smaller player pool and its map being easy to move around in. It’s a top-down game and you get to control your character from above. It’s set like one of those mobile battle royales, with this feeling like it’s on steroids.

Initially, Watchers plays like your typical battle royale. You’ll pick one of the nine areas in the map first where you’ll be then dropped off in a random location within it. The next order of business is to do what you do best in a battle royale: look for weapons and equipment scattered on the area. At first, you’ll only be armed with a baseball bat and you’ll need to move quickly to acquire weapons like AK-47s, shotguns, and rocket launchers as well as equipment like medkits.

The combat takes a while to get used to. If you haven’t played any top-down games before, you’ll find it hard to aim and shoot. At times, I had to get super close to enemies in order to land some hits in. Missing is rage-inducing, especially since the AI is smart and highly skilled. In any case, it’s best to use the environment to your advantage: hide behind cover and use buildings for cover. Also, note that stealth barely works: an offensive style is highly recommended and it wouldn’t do you any good to camp. In addition, if your character is injured, they leave blood trails which will easily pinpoint where you are.

The gameplay mechanic that sets Watchers apart from its peers is its Watcher mode. When you die, you can still be an active participant. You can bet on who they think will win, drop surprise boxes, perform experiments, raining bombs, and turning bullets into bubbles to influence the flow of the battle. You’re given a top-down view of the entire map and everybody’s movements. However, this may not work especially in solo modes with friends. Of course, people will definitely team up and help out their mates. In any case, this quirk may only work if you’re paired with a pool of random players.

Community

We can’t speak much about the community since only the demo is available. However, this feels like it could be a good game for streamers and people who want to try out a battle royale with a different formula.

Graphics/Sound

In terms of presentation, Watchers isn’t exactly the most visually attractive game out there, but it holds up when compared to triple-A titles and its other peers. The art style and overall world design look fantastic. Moreover, it’s incredibly unique since there aren’t exactly a lot of games set in the mid-1900s.

However, it could help if the lootable items would stand out more. As of today, they look bland and you can easily miss out on good weapons simply because they blend well with the background.

Conclusion

Overall, Watchers is a quirky new battle royale that is definitely worth playing. The new post-death watcher/spectator mechanic is a nice touch, giving players something to do even after they’re beaten. In a way, it’s perfect for getting back at enemies who killed you and vice versa. Be sure to give it a shot when it launches!
