In a nutshell, Scavengers is an action-packed free-to-play third-person shooter where squads of three players dive into the frozen wastelands to survive and scavenge whatever resources they can find. You’ll take the mantle as one of the few Explorers, each with their backstories, abilities, and strengths.

Available on Steam, the game is a strategic survival battleground that merges several mechanics together, and it does so without being cumbersome. The characters are class-based, which means that, much like Overwatch, there are various roles you can play, and you can find one that fits your overall play style. The thing is, is Scavengers something you’d want to dive into? Let’s take a look at what it has to offer and see if it’s worth going back to the planet once more:

Plotline

Imagine Earth turning into a frozen wasteland caused by an asteroid that shattered the moon. Not only did it turn into a subzero planet with little life, but it birthed a virus that turned the inhabitants into crazed, bloodthirsty mutants. As humans living in the Sanctuary guided by “Mother,” you’re tasked to periodically return to the planet to seek treasures and hopefully find a cure for the virus. You’ll not only have to fight the mutants but also deal with the environment and, yes, your fellow explorers.

Gameplay

Scavengers’ gameplay is a mix of PvE and PvP, essentially making it a PvEvP game. You’ll drop into a battlefield along with two other players (making a squad of three) and try to achieve any of the listed objectives. You may simply go in guns blazing, taking down both mutants and human enemies, or do it strategically by controlling data points on the map more than your rivals. One thing is for sure: you need to gather enough resources and fulfill objectives to be deemed worthy of extracting yourself from the wasteland.

The Explorers you control on Scavengers have various capabilities and skills, giving them a specific role as you trudge and slide on snow. Kali is a stealthy archer from Belarus, Halden, a survivalist from America, is perfect for a support role since he can revive downed teammates and heal those inside his curative aura. Although gunplay is a crucial aspect in Scavengers, tactical prowess and the ability to effectively use characters’ skills play a vital role in achieving victory.

There are many ways to approach objectives in Scavengers, but be sure to avoid environmental hazards like storms that can rend your body asunder and, of course, mutants and other players. You can approach objectives stealthily or even go in guns blazing if you like to keep things loud and straightforward. Regardless of your chosen tactic, you’ll definitely have your hands full dealing with countless mutants and the looming threat of other players stumbling into your location.

Although Scavengers feels more like a typical TPS, it’s far from that. The characters control beautifully, meaning you can jump, run, and slide to your objectives. In a way, it feels a lot like a mix between Valorant and Apex Legends, which is a good thing. You can also use environmental elements, like exploding barrels and salvageable vehicles. In between runs, you can craft new weapons and items to expand your arsenal, letting you become more formidable each time you return to the wasteland.

Scavengers’ progression elements are rather grindy. It’ll likely take hours of grinding to get the items you desire, but thankfully, there are no pay-to-win elements currently. However, we do expect different forms of microtransactions in the near future. Here’s to hoping it’ll only come in the form of skins and cosmetics.

Community

Currently on early access on both Steam and Epic Games, Scavengers has a rather decent-sized player-base. This means you can find games and matches without spending too much time in the lobby. Moreover, you can also join communities on Discord and Reddit to discuss the game with your fellow players or take it up a notch by finding people to dive into the wastelands.

Graphics/Sound

In terms of presentation, Scavengers holds up well when compared with its bigger-budget peers. The game looks and runs smoothly on an i5 PC with a 1060-6GB graphics card, and its environments, characters, and enemies are wonderfully designed. Although the setting look rather dull thanks to all the snow, the special effects and how different the enemies appear more than make up for it. Nothing but high praises for the character designs - they look nothing short of fantastic.

Overall, Scavengers is a fantastic PvEvP third-person shooter that is undoubtedly worth diving into. It takes a multifaceted approach to gameplay that all contribute to helping players fulfill objectives and reach their goals.
