Summary
Ever wonder how it feels being part of a vampire clan and having supernatural powers enough to make mere mortals coil at your feet? No, we’re not talking about the sparkling vampires akin to that popular franchise that we all want to forget. We’re referring to REAL blood-drinking, undead, and powerful Count Dracula-esque beings that won’t hesitate to grab a wine glass whenever you hand them a blood bag.
Well, Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodhunt delivers this kind of experience. This is not just another entry in the long line of battle royales in an oversaturated market, but it’s incredibly well-made. Compared to its peers, it’s a fast-paced experience where constant movement matters more than positioning. You don’t run around and crouch whenever you’re in trouble: you use your vampiric powers and a massive array of weapons to engage or evade.
Yes, we know: you might be a little tired of battle royale games at this point. However, Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodhunt sets itself apart from its mates in the genre, delivering a fresh experience and gameplay loop thanks to its relatively robust customization options and vampire variations. If you’re thinking of adding it to your backlog, here’s what it can deliver:
Plotline
Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodhunt is quite heavy on lore, unlike other BR games. You’ll immediately be dropped into a cutscene explaining how The Masquerade (the practice of concealing vampiric identity) has been breached, and warring vampire clans are vying for dominance in the streets of Prague. The thing is, the human authorities are trying to contain the violence, hence the AI enemies scattered across the city. I’m not one to get into the lore, but the game offers an extensive compendium where you can read about the setting, story, and characters.
Gameplay
Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodhunt is a battle royale game where you can dive into the streets of Prague on your own or with a team. Your character is a vampire trying to survive the violent clan war against his fellow sanguine beings and the Second Inquisition. Unlike most of its BR peers, the game is a lot more fast-paced, focusing on diving in and out of action quickly. No, you don’t crouch or go prone when you hear bullets zipping across your way. Instead, you’ll make a break for it and try to flank your opponent by climbing on walls or using your abilities to make a getaway. The zone dwindles thanks to the ever-encroaching red gas, which takes the place of the storm in this game. Moreover, you have two lives in this game, and you regenerate the first time you die unless the safe zone is pretty small. Once you down an opponent, you can either kill or “diablerize” them - doing the latter lets you increase resonance so you can gain more buffs.
Your vampire’s abilities in Bloodhunt depend on your chosen clan. In addition, you can also select your archetypes before each match. There are currently seven in total, and each caters to a particular playstyle. You’ll have several options, like the Brujah if you prefer brute strength. However, if you prefer being a relentless hunter or a saboteur adept at traps, become Nosferatu.
Meanwhile, the Toreador can charm enemies and rejuvenate allies, and finally, the Ventrue can disrupt enemies and be invulnerable for a short time.
Apart from your clan abilities, you can also activate your supernatural vampiric senses to “see” footsteps, mortals, and loot scattered across the vicinity. After every match, you’ll gain experience and level up your archetype mastery, paving the way for more rewards.
Unlike its peers, you don’t drop into the map. Instead, you will choose your spawn point, and yes, you have to click fast if you want access to good loot. You see, there are several preset hotspots on the map and medical shops, antique stores, and weapon shops where you can loot items. Weapons and ammo are scattered across the ground, behind police and delivery vans, and inside rare weapons chests. In addition, you can also act as a traditional vampire by drinking the blood of unwary mortals. By doing so, you’ll restore health and, at the same time, gain certain buffs like reduced skill cooldowns, health regeneration, and an extra life. However, be sure not to do this in public, or else you will trigger the Bloodhunt mechanic, which makes you visible to all other characters in the match.
The weapons in Bloodhunt include shotguns, assault rifles (burst and semi auto), a silenced submachine gun, and a couple of marksmen rifles. Crossbows and explosive dual pistols are part of the fray, and a massive selection of melee weapons. The shooting mechanics are arcade-ish; think more in the league of Fortnite than something grounded on realism like PUBG.
Community
Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodhunt has a massive online community due to the game’s recent release and surge in popularity. We could safely say it’s one of today's hottest battle royale games. The game has an official Discord community and a subreddit perfect for anyone looking for players to discuss the game with.
Graphics/Sound
Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodhunt is a sublime-looking game. It has outstanding visuals and impeccable sound design. Every step, jump, and bite on the neck of every mortal contributes to making it feel like you’re genuinely a vampire. Prague, the setting, is incredibly well-detailed, and its overall look and themes make it a perfect backdrop for a vampiric clan war. The game runs well on a GTX 1060-6GB with zero framerate drops and stability issues, so if you have a graphics card with the same power or higher, you’ll have an optimum experience.
Bloodhunt also lets you customize your character, and you will have options ranging from his wardrobe to hair color and face type. Also, note that every clan/archetype may have a different aesthetic. For example, Nosferatu types look like decrepit zombies, while it’s challenging to tell Toreadors and mortals from one another.
Conclusion
Overall, Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodhunt is a bloody good experience. This battle royale might be the new kid on the block, but it’s nothing short of fantastic. Though it’s a traditional battle royale, smooth controls, outstanding combat elements, and a unique vampire storyline delivers a fresh and fast-paced experience you need to try out.
