Summary

Ultimate Zombie Defense 2 is a first-person survivors-like that’s set in a zombie-infested world, where you can build various defenses from explosive barrels to chain-link fences, to even automatic sentries. Survive alone or with friends as you take on waves of zombies, including unique zombies and boss-level ones. There’s even a tower defense-like mode where the goal is changed to defending a mounted antenna from being destroyed.

Gameplay

Ultimate Zombie Defense 2 features the familiar sort of survivors-like gameplay that every fan know and love, albeit in a first-person perspective. To start a game, you’ll have to first decide if you’re playing solo or multiplayer (up to four players). Even in multiplayer mode, you’ve got options – you can create a private game and play with a group of friends, or you could hop into a true pick-me-up group mayhem by joining or creating a public game. There are even two ways you can join a public game – you could use Quick Match to quickly find a random group to join, or use the Server Browser to find a group that’s playing a game that’s more to your liking.

Once done, you’ll then be able to customize your game… that is, if you’re creating one. At the moment, you’ll get to choose between three maps (with two more coming soon) and game modes (namely, Just Survive, Just Survive without building, and Defend the Objective) respectively, each offering a unique experience overall, along with a range of difficulty levels. After setting up the game, you’re ready to get into the thick of battle!

The game does away with the usual introductory fanfare by dropping the player right into a game after the loading screen – which can be fairly long especially if you’re loading the game assets for the first time - with little to no tutorial. The only guide you get are often written in the tooltips or on things like the wall or the vending machine. The game is rather straightforward to be honest, so you’re not missing much even without a tutorial. However, you might want to check the control settings first to learn which key to use to throw a throwable item like a Molotov cocktail, and which to do a melee hit with the butt of your gun.

Now, for survival mode, the goal is clear – survive increasingly difficult waves of zombies and see how long you can last. This mode allows building, which meant that you can actually set up turrets, barriers, sentries, traps, explosives, and mines to aid you in your quest for survival. Setting up barriers, for instance, can sometimes help funnel the enemies so that you won’t find yourself swarmed from all sides, while having a few well-position sentries can oftentimes mean that you only really have to fire your weapon when the occasional zombie breaks through your defenses.

Of course, there’s also the teleporter, which allows you to teleport between two portals that you can place at strategic locations. Needless to say, the building aspect does make the game a little bit easier. However, note that you can’t build during an ongoing wave, only in between waves, since the game will shift you to a top-down view to make building a lot easier.

You should also remember to repair anything that needs repairing in between waves, rearm your sentries and mounted turrets, and rebuild anything that was destroyed in the prior wave. You can sell off anything that you don’t need in the game’s build mode but you only get a fraction of the money spent back, even if you’ve just incorrectly placed something and immediately sold it a second later. I should probably point out that not all of the defenses you can build are useful. There are defenses that zombies can simply jump over even if technically they shouldn’t be able to.

Similarly, the many stat upgrades you can buy using cash earned from slaying zombies can only be purchased during the lull in battle. You have a very limited time in between waves though, so you’ll need to strategize how to best use the money earned and fast! The upgrades include upgrades to sentry speed and damage, to even the durability of various barriers. These upgrades aren’t purchased outright but rather the player/s (yes, plural) will decide how much of the money they earned from the previous wave they want to invest into a new upgrade.

Once the full cost of the upgrade is paid, the upgrade will then be unlocked. You may also get random yet incredible discounts on these upgrades if you’re lucky and patient enough. To be honest, the only time you should really invest in upgrades is when you get some crazy discount like 50% or more, though having a discount is still better than having none – these upgrades are insanely costly without discounts. Note that you can also drop cash for your teammate to buy a better gun or armor in this game.

The Defend the Objective mode, on the other hand, is designed to be a lot closer to the traditional tower defense formula in some sense since the goal here isn’t so much to survive since you get respawns if you do fall in battle – it’s to defend the mounted antenna, which presumably is sending out SOS signals, from being destroyed. Aside from unlimited respawns (though, there are cooldowns), you’ll, for instance, be able to see which direction the zombies will be attacking from thanks to highlighted footprints on the ground and hence, strategize accordingly.

For both types of game modes, there’s a bit of an exploration aspect as well here since you get to venture out from your cozy little tower-defended base to explore the map. This may lead to helpful discoveries, like powerful perk machines which allow you to buy a powerful perk which will persist throughout the current run at a high cost, as well as new weapons and armor that you’ll buy off walls. If you’re lucky, you may even stumble upon the mystery chest which will randomly give you a rare weapon that you can’t just buy off any walls in the game, or a machine where you can spend a whopping 10k in cash to upgrade your equipped gun.

Aside from throwing different unique zombies much like the ones in Left for Dead, the game also spices things up by having a boss wave at every 10th wave milestone. There are two kinds of bosses you can fight depending on which way you and your teammates vote. You can choose to enter the hellish-looking portal that suddenly pops up and fight a boss in its home turf - hell, or you could stay in your home turf and battle a demon instead. It’s definitely easier for you if you don’t enter the portal since you’ll get to rely on your defenses to potentially stem the boss’s advance and attacks.

You’ll earn experience points as you progress in every run you play, which will gradually level up your character. Levelling up grants you skill points that you can then invest in the Skill Tree to purchase permanent perks. Currently, two out of the three skill trees are available. There’s also a custom map editor which presumably will be released later down the road.

As fun as Ultimate Zombie Defense 2 is, the game is unfortunately very glitchy even if it doesn’t allow you to jump, even over short obstacles, making it very possible for zombies to swarm you if you’re not careful. When swarmed, you may find it difficult to find a way out, resulting in a game over. Headshots seem a bit nerfed as well, mainly because headshots don’t guarantee an instant kill, and the zombies can become very tanky after a couple of waves. Oh, and if you tend to get motion sickness from playing games, you might want to look into the settings prior to playing and perhaps disable the Bloom option.

Graphics/ Sound

Ultimate Zombie Defense 2 features fairly great graphics, although most of them tend to contain dark hues and colors which may make some stuff a bit hard to see. That’s why you can actually build lights to further illuminate your surroundings in this game. The visuals feel realistic enough, as far as first-person shooters go, and the UI is quite well designed.

In terms of sound, Ultimate Zombie Defense 2 has a selection of hardcore rock music in the background to keep the adrenaline going as you mow down waves after waves of zombies. This music becomes a lot more toned down during the in-between phase where you get to build and upgrade stuff. There are lots of sound effects as well, all of which do a great job of providing players with cues to help them survive even longer.

Conclusion

Ultimate Zombie Defense 2 beautifully merges tower defense-style gameplay with survivors-like, providing players with a rather unique experience that is both strategic in nature and thrilling, thanks to its first-person shooter aspect. Progression is also fun and satisfying, as you’ll get to unlock more powerful perks which should make it possible to survive even longer in the next run. If you’re fan of both genres, Ultimate Zombie Defense 2 is definitely one game you don’t want to miss!
