Summary

Post Void is an insanely fast-paced and hardcore boomer shooter that’s set in a bizarre psychedelic world filled with monstrous humanoids, drones, and turrets that will shoot at you. Your health is leaking out of the idol you’re holding in your left hand and the only way to refill it is by killing others and absorbing their health as they die. Can you make it to the end of each maze-like map without getting killed?

Plotline

The introduction that plays right after you completed the tutorial seems to indicate that the character you are playing is suffering from some immense headache that couldn’t be cured or would go away on its own. Due to this, it hopes to reach The Void, a place that has only darkness and silence – a place of peace for the sufferer; a place where it could finally give its life to sprout a new one.

However, the journey to The Void is filled with corridors that are “wallpapered” by violence and noise. This is known as the Post Void, and you’ll have to do your hardest to get through them all.

Gameplay

Like any boomer shooter, Post Void is a very easy game to get into. You simply need to make your way through the various maze-like corridors to get to the end, wherever that may be, while making sure you don’t lose all your health.

As mentioned, your health bar is indicated by the amount of fluid in the idol gripped by your left hand. The only way to restore health to the idol is by killing enemies and leeching their health. Of course, there’s another way you could make your health bar last longer, that is by not getting hit by the enemy. Though, I should point out that due to how fast you’ll need to be in this game in order to survive, you probably won’t have too much time to check the idol and see how much health you have left.

The one main thing, aside from the graphics which we’ll cover later, that really sets Post Void aside from the other games within its genre is the crazy breakneck speed at which you’re expected to stick to in order to make it to the end. You see, your health leaks out rather quickly and only by constantly replenishing it will you be able to survive a few seconds longer to get to your next target.

As you might expect, every second counts in this game and this includes the time you may need to reload – make sure to do it while you’re rushing along an empty corridor and not when you’re in the middle of a gunfight – as well as the amount of time you need to take down a single enemy. Naturally, having great aim while moving at high speeds really come in handy here since headshots will take out enemies with a single bullet, saving you some precious time.

Post Void is a true roguelike as well. This means that if you die in this game, there’s no last save for you to load or a checkpoint to respawn at - You start again at the very beginning of the map. Each map is also procedurally generated so it’s very unlikely you’ll get the same exact level design in two separate runs.

As you progress, you’ll discover new weapons, some more powerful than others (There are four weapons in total), along with various upgrades that may help you with the increasingly more challenging enemies you’ll encounter.

Community

Post Void isn’t a multiplayer game but it does have a community aspect to it, thanks to its leaderboard. Here, you can see how you fare against other players within the community by seeing which rank your highest high score manage to get.

Graphics/ Sound

The graphics here are nothing short of impressive! Not only does it give off a retro 90s vibe, thanks to the grainy hand-drawn art and vibrant colors, that matches well with the genre, but the visuals also nailed that psychedelic theme down perfectly. However, do take note that if you’re sensitive to flashing lights, you might want to give this game a wide berth. On the upside, all the fast-paced action in this game doesn’t give me any motion sickness, which I do tend to get especially if motion blur is present.

In terms of sound, the game features a rock-themed background music that really gets that adrenaline going. The sound effects are on-point too, giving you clear indications, especially considering how fast you’ll likely be moving in this game, whether you’ve managed to kill an enemy or whether your bullets hit their target.

Conclusion

If you crave a boomer shooter that features high intensity gameplay and fast-paced action from start to finish, Post Void can fill in that niche perfectly and is definitely a game that fans of retro 90s FPS should play. As a bonus, it also has a very low price tag, especially considering the insane amount of replayability the game has.
