Summary

Touted as the most realistic hunting game ever, theHunter is a hunting simulation game where you will get to hunt a myriad of animals, ranging from the Whitetail Deer to the European Rabbit (up to 39 different species), in various beautiful hunting reserves worldwide. Put your hunting skills to the test as you track, spot and bag your kills within record time, all the while keeping the integrity of your kill trophy intact. As you may expect, the game also provides numerous hunting rifles, along with a plethora of accessories to augment your rifles, for you to hunt with.

Gameplay

To play, you’ll have to first link your game with your Steam account first, which is rather weird considering that I launched the game via Steam in the first place. However, if you don’t want to do so, you can simply create a game account the old way – using your email address.

During the sign-up process, you’ll get to create your avatar and choose a username. You’ll also get a free weapon, the 12 GA Single Shot shotgun, in addition to your default .243 Bolt-Action Rifle; and free lifetime hunting licenses for Whitetail Deer, pheasant, and European rabbit, plus two more free animals that are rotated on a weekly basis.

Once done, you can choose to play the tutorial or simply dive right into a hunting reserve and start hunting. Honestly, I would highly recommend starting with the tutorial primarily because you’ll be introduced to the basics of hunting. This includes the “ideal” hunting process that you should follow, which mainly consists of 5 steps: Tracking, Spotting (using your binoculars, Luring (using the animal caller), Shooting and Confirming your kill.

The tutorial also introduces you to your Huntermate, a tool that’s supposedly really helpful in highlighting stuff that you can track such as hoofprints, animal excrement and resting areas. However, in actuality, it’s not as useful in that manner because it won’t highlight these trackable clues. You actually have to find these clues yourself, which can be really difficult. Instead, I’d say it’s more useful as a portable mini-map more than a tracker. You will also need the Huntermate to confirm a kill and view your kill stats.

You’ll learn how to control your character and how to shoot as well. You’ll use the standard WASD keys to move. Tap the left Control key once to crouch and twice to lie on your stomach and crawl. To stand back up again, simply tap the left Shift key. You can also run for a limited duration by toggling the “C” key. Movement in this game is not as smooth as some RPG/shooters that I’ve played before but it’s functional and works well enough if you are patient and don’t rush in for the kill.

After the tutorial, you can choose to roam Whitehart Island in search of further prey or simply hop into the game proper. The game features 11 different hunting reserves with varying biomes and environments, including the freezing sub-arctic region of Alaska to the hot and humid swamps of Louisiana. Each map is designed to be their own respective “open worlds”, and they have realistic weather as well as day and night cycles.

Each map includes a smattering of watch towers which you can use to spot the general area of a roaming animal that you want to hunt, mysterious Stonehenge-like stone structures, and tents/ hunting lodges where you can rest, have some fun shooting at the shooting range, purchase new items or change your loadout.

Different reserves will naturally be home to a selection of animals which you can then hunt depending on the rotation. You can hunt small animals like rabbits, geese and turkeys; to medium ones like elks, foxes and bobcats; and to even massive and sometimes aggressive animals like bears, bison and wild boar.

Each animal is beautifully modelled in 3D and animated to mimic real animal movements and behavior. For instance, when stalking an animal, making too much noise will alert your prey to your presence and get it sprinting for its life. However, this also means you can use sound to your advantage as well. You can use a caller to lure an animal to you while you stay hidden, readying your shot. If you listen closely, you may even hear the rustling of leaves as an animal makes its way through the forest. Finding animals to hunt can be a tad bit difficult though since it involves running around and hoping you’ll spot a track or the animal itself in the distance.

There are also many different weapons for you to use in your hunting trips. Aside from the free guns, you can and will need to buy more guns using in-game currency you’ve earned from selling off your successful kills. You can also get new guns by using real-life currency or by winning in-game competitions.

Different guns will allow you to hunt different prey (depends on the size of the animal) in an “ethical” manner. “Ethical” here refers mainly to whether or not you’re using the “correct gun” – a gun that’s too powerful or too weak for a prey is considered “unethical” in the game possibly because you won’t be able to get a clean kill with unsuitable weapons.

Your weapons can be augmented with scopes and other items too. Most of these items can be bought using game currency, but there’s a few of them, namely pouches and holsters, can be obtained only via completing achievements.

Although the game does provide a nice selection of different animals for you to hunt on a weekly basis, you might want to hunt any one of the 39 species any time you like. If so, you can grab a premium membership instead.

Community

theHunter allows multiplayer play and as such, you can actually play with your friends (up to 8 players in total) and work cooperatively to take down nature’s most aggressive animals. As enjoyable as hunting alone may sound, it’s even more fun if your friends are involved, that’s for sure!

Graphics/ Sound

Despite the old-timey look of its sign-up interface, the graphics in game itself look absolutely breathtaking. The details in each animal model is also simply mind-blowing. The default resolution is a bit odd though since it doesn’t automatically stretch to accommodate your screen.

In terms of sound, the game really makes full use of sound direction to help you “hear” your prey, usually before you see it. However, as mentioned before, it can also work to your disadvantage such as accidentally startling an animal before you are ready to fire a shot.

Both graphics and sound, when combined, create a truly immersive, open world for you and other fellow hunters to explore and hunt prey.

Conclusion

Featuring amazing graphics and impressively immersive hunting grounds, theHunter most definitely deserve its title of being one of the most realistic hunting simulation game around. If you enjoy hunting sims, this is one game you won’t want to miss! The game’s free to play too!
