Summary
Dread Templar is a thrilling boomer shooter that features fast-paced action from start to finish! In this game, you play as a Dread Templar who embarked on a quest of vengeance, leaving trails of blood from hell and beyond. Blast your way through dungeons filled with gruesome demons using bullet time to great effect, find secrets and side quests, and upgrade your character at the altar through runes and blood gems. Will you be able to exact your revenge on those who have wronged you?
Plotline
The boy who grew up to become the Dread Templar was raised by his grandfather in a small cabin in what is likely at the countryside. However, one day, a red mist with a terrible smell surrounded their little cabin during bedtime. His grandfather shoved the boy into a hidden compartment in the wall and warned him to not make any sound, as he readied his rifle to face whatever that’s coming.
The story is left hanging here, letting you to creatively fill in the gaps as to what happened to the boy from the moment he was in the hidden compartment to now, wielding a pair of katanas and descending into hell to wreck some rightful vengeance on its demonic inhabitants. Personally, it would have been better had the story been fleshed out a bit more.
Gameplay
Dread Templar Starts off with a short and sweet tutorial, showing you what you can do in the game. This is important since the game does include some features that typical boomer shooters lack, such as bullet time and dash (which coincidentally was only introduced in Doom Eternal), and the fact that your default melee weapon, the dual katana can be combined into a spear and hurled at your target to impale them.
Weapons in this game are well-varied and fun. Shotguns rightfully pack a punch while dual-wielded pistols and submachine guns may take a while to cut down enemies, but they are the better choice when it comes to targeting ranged enemies. Interestingly, if you obtain a new weapon of the same weapon type, the game automatically You can carry only so much ammo in the game but personally, considering that you can get quite a bit of ammo from crates, vases as well as from hidden stashes and sometimes, from enemies, I never felt as though I had to scrimp and save on ammo. Of course, having good aim helps too *wink*.
Every level in this game is designed like a dungeon and sometimes, you may come across a room with a whole lot more enemies all charging or shooting at you. In those times, you might want to make full use of the game’s bullet time effect, provided that you have enough bullet time energy, and dash to avoid getting hit. This is also true for the game’s many thrilling boss fights. Bosses are fought in arenas and, naturally, they have special abilities. It may take a while to learn the patterns and subsequently, to learn how to avoid getting hit.
As you progress, you’ll encounter Runes that you can affix to your character’s Skill Panel via altars that you may find in the dungeon. You can add two common runes per weapon and character category with the last being a legendary rune – you’ll know one when you see one! However, before you can do so, you’ll need to unlock the respective rune slots first. The first rune slot will cost you one Blood Gem with subsequent slots costing you more. Blood Gems aren’t exactly common, however, and if there’s a chance to get one, it’s best if you go ahead and take that chance. Oh, and you can easily swap Runes once you have a slot unlocked. Just find an altar and you can change the Runes you have equipped to the ones that match your playstyle the most.
As a boomer shooter, speed and movement can be very fast-paced, offering speedrunners a thrilling challenge as they try to beat each level within the shortest time possible. However, for those of us who just want to enjoy the shooting and the action, we could easily slow down our pace and the game would work too. In fact, if you love finding hidden secrets, you might want to slow down a little since the game is filled with them. Some are more difficult to find than others though, and may require you to pull a lever or something before you can access the stash behind it. Most of these secret locations contain additional ammo and sometimes, an armor, but if you’re lucky, you may even get a rune!
It's also interesting to note that Dread Templar comes with a lot of manual save points that are strategically placed throughout the dungeon. The game’s stable so there are no game crashes, but in the event of a power outage, know that you won’t have to start a level from the very beginning. That being said, the game should definitely remove all the save points for its hard mode. The save points do make hard mode feel easy thanks to save scumming.
Graphics/ Sound
Dread Templar stayed true to its boomer shooter roots by using the familiar pixel-styled graphics that we know and love from games like Doom. In terms of sound, the game features upbeat rock music that matches perfectly with all the action happening on-screen. There’s also a short section during the introduction where the game has a bit of voice acting but the voice acting can definitely be improved. It’s also uncanny that the sound that your character makes when he gets injured sounds so similar to the one in Diablo. Maybe it’s just me though!
Conclusion
Dread Temple is a love letter to the iconic boomer shooters that we all know and love in the past, with an infusion of modern mechanics that are prominent in many other boomer shooters that have been launched during this resurgence of the genre. The action is fast and exhilarating, and progression is fun, though storytelling could definitely use a bit more fleshing out. Dread Templar is also developed by a single developer making this excellent game all the more impressive!
