Summary

Sunken Secrets adds a unique spin on farming with its interesting location – under the sea. With most actions based on magic, you need to build magic fountains and other magic-producing structures. You can then collect magic and start restoring buildings, removing objects caused by the Sea Witch’s curse and bringing cursed inhabitants back to human form. Then, the farming fun begins. Plant and harvest fruits and other crops and turn it into beverages and food items using different machines.

Plotline

In a kingdom under the sea, a jealous Sea Witch placed a curse on an island and all that live in it. The land is locked by giant octopus tentacles and grimy seaweeds. The people were turned into sea creatures like snails, turtles and slugs. Now, it’s up to you to fight back evil and restore the kingdom back, with a bit of magic and help from friends.

Gameplay

You start the game in the midst of chaos and destruction. The island’s houses and other buildings are in ruins, and people have been turned into snails and turtles. You’re given a big magic fountain to start cleaning things up and “de-cursing” areas one at a time. The first area you’ll de-curse is Louisa’s house, who is the main heroine of this game. Once her house is back in order, you can carry on de-cursing and rebuilding other areas like Ye Olde Tavern and Miner’s Digs. You can also now stat planting crops (you start with carrots and potatoes) and convert them into juice using the juicer or food using the cauldron.

Crops are given in limited amount when you unlock them, and when they run out, you need to buy them with Pearls or buy from friends. This is something unique about the game: you cannot buy crop seeds from the Shop. To “multiply” a crop, plant it on a farm patch. One unit of crop planted on a farm patch will double in quantity. A warning message will pop up when you use your last crop. Instead of using it on something, plant it on a farm patch first, then try to buy the crop you need from friends.

When you start, you’ll have a specific number for your Magic Limit. This is the maximum amount of magic you can collect. Even if your magic-generating buildings are giving you 500 units of magic, if your Magic Limit is 250, then you can only collect 250 units. As you restore buildings, your Magic Limit will increase. Different magic fountains will require some time to regenerate magic, and the longer it takes, the more magic it generates.

There are two currencies in this game: Coins and Pearls. You earn Coins when you sell fruits, crops and other products in the Market or by fulfilling Requests posted on the community board. You also get Coins when leveling up or helping out neighbors. Pearls are the premium currency of the game, and these are used for buying special items in the shop or speeding up production of materials or generating magic from flowers and fountains. Both currencies can be used to purchase items from the shop. You get Pearls as a reward when unlocking an Achievement, completing special quests and fulfilling a resident’s request.

When you use magic to de-curse buildings and walls, you collect some bricks which you can put into the Miner’s Dig to produce more bricks. Bricks can then be used to restore houses and walls. Be sure to always have some bricks processed in the Mine, as you need these to restore buildings, which are important to accomplish future missions. The Mine can also produce Gems, which are used to purchase special items from the Shop.

As you level up, you’ll be able to unlock and gather magic to de-curse other areas like the Tailor’s Turf and Wizard’s Tower. The Tailor’s Turf area lets you rebuild the Tailor’s Bench, which will generate fabric. You can sell Fabric in the Market, or give to Requests posted by the residents. You’ll also be able to trade with other islands by de-cursing the Wizard near the edge of the island. The Wizard will then instruct you to repair the fresco (the wall beside Luisa’s house) to open the first trading route, which leads to Panda island. You’ll need tools to repair the fresco, and you can get tools by buying them with Pearls or as previously rewarded when granting an Islander’s request.

Trading with other islands is important not just for Coin rewards but also for collecting stones, which you need to build special buildings like the Wizard’s Tower and Panda Whirl. A Wizard’s Tower will enable to add more Wizards, and a Panda Whirl will let you add Panda Boys and Panda Girls to participate in dance-offs.

Graphics/Sound

This is one of the best-looking farming games around, and it deserves a mention. Images are big, bright and colorful, although zooming in slightly makes some images pixelated. Despite this, the overall graphics are very pleasing to look at. The background music is also very calming and doesn’t get annoying the longer you play.

With its unique theme combining sea life and magic, Sunken Secrets is a refreshing farm management game with something new to offer. While you won’t get to play for too long unless you make some in-game purchases, the rewards of that await you are far too great to ignore.
