Plotline

As a child, you have always loved visiting your grandpa’s restaurant. The food was great; the place was buzzing with hungry customers and there are even plenty of famous people around. However, after years in the business, your grandpa wanted to take some time to travel the world and so he shuttered the restaurant’s doors and retired.

Fast forward to the present day, you have just graduated from culinary school and are eager to start cooking… what better way to kick start your career in the cooking business by taking over your grandpa’s restaurant and restoring it to its former fame and glory.

Gameplay

World Chef is really a simple game to get into. The controls are insanely easy – all you need to do is to drag and drop to cook and to serve. You may need to tap a couple of times, such as when taking a customer’s order or collecting your payment, as well, but that’s just about it. The game even included a well-designed tutorial to guide you through the basics just so you can hit the ground running.

Like most café simulation games (not like those time-management ones) such as Dining Zoo, this game lets you prepare and cook a wide variety of dishes. The dishes you get to prepare depends on the cooking stations you have. Some stations use raw ingredients that you can buy straight from the market while others are more of an assembly station where a cuisine is assembled by combining previously prepared ingredients.

However, the game does have a limit on how many slots you can have per food station. Ingredient-preparation stations allow you to cook up to 3 items at once and you can speed the process up with gems (premium currency) if you want to. Food-assembly stations, on the other hand, only provide you with 2 cooking slots for free, though you can purchase additional slots by spending gems. Similarly, you can speed things up using gems as well.

The food you’ve prepared are all stored in a food storage area while the ingredients you buy are stored in… you’ve guessed it - The ingredients storage area! Both storage areas can be upgraded, and hence, expanded, once you’ve collected the specific building materials needed.

Food is not meant to be kept away – it is to be consumed! The food you’ve made can be sold for a tidy little profit in World Chef. You can serve the customers who drop by your shop to earn some money once they’ve finished eating. Serving customers will also earn you some tips in the form of gems. Unfortunately, in order to collect the gems you’ve earned, you have to pay real cash to open the tip jar for some reason.

There’s even an errand boy from one of those food delivery services who will have a specific food order for you. Fulfill that order and you’ll get some instant game cash! You can sell any extra food you’ve made to other players and buy any food that you’re short of from other players at the Social Market as well.

The ultimate goal in this game is to build up the popularity of your restaurant so it can reach the pinnacle of the food industry – getting 3 Michelin stars. As such, you’ll find yourself needing to spend the cash you’ve earned on buying decorations that will bump up your popularity rating. Naturally, not all items will do that so you really need to pay attention and only buy items that will actually help… unless, of course, it’s for aesthetic reasons.

Running out of space? Well, you can expand your restaurant by snapping up nearby plots of land. If the plot in question has obstacles, like trees, on it, then you’ll need to get rid of the obstacle (which, in this case, is by getting a chainsaw) before you can buy the land. It’s a weird system and is not at all realistic, but it works well in games.

As your restaurant grows in fame, more famous people will be more inclined to drop by and dine at your place. Catering to these usually picky celebrities can be tough, but the rewards can be quite lucrative. They bring the star power to your restaurant, after all! As you play, you will also earn achievements which will in turn slowly move you up the Chef ranking.

Progression in World Chef can be pretty satisfying since it unlocks a new feature with every few new levels you gain; features that supplement the gameplay in a fun way. For instance, the Academy of High Cuisine, which is unlocked at level 10, lets you collect recipes and upgrade the quality of your dishes. Higher quality dishes equal to more profit and customer satisfaction… hence, a huge win-win!

There’s even a Design Studio where you can collect blueprints and craft exclusive decorations, a VIP mansion for when the celebrities decide to drop by your restaurant, a chillout area for organizing private functions, a dock where you can set off on expeditions to gather exotic ingredients, and a winemaker for you to create your own brand of wine.

World Chef is a freemium game, and as such, the game does have an in-game store where it sells premium and game currency in exchange for real cash. The premium gems that you get can then be used to speed up processes, buy premium-only décor or hire premium-only chefs.

Community

Similar to many café/restaurant simulations, World Chef is a very social game. Here, you will not only be able to visit your friends and trade with them; you can even ask them for help to fulfill any order you’ve marked using the SOS function. Likewise, you can help your friends out by completing their SOS orders as well.

Graphics/ Sound

The graphics in World Chef is simply amazing. The visuals are all very bright, cheery and fun to look at. On the same vein, the soothing yet pretty catchy background sound in this game complements the overall theme really well.

Conclusion

In a nutshell, World Chef is a really entertaining, free-to-play restaurant simulation game. Aside from the unique friends-based SOS feature, its gameplay is basically very similar to Dining Zoo, so if you’ve enjoyed playing the latter, you’ll definitely love playing the former game. The best thing about all of this is that World Chef is a mobile-exclusive game (if you don’t count all those Android emulators for PCs) so you can enjoy the game while you’re in transit or on-the-go.
