Summary
Mahjong Magic Journey 2 is the sequel to Big Fish’s large line of Mahjong casual games that revolve more on matching identical icons or numbers. Featuring over hundreds of game levels that will challenge any players’ brain and hours of hours of puzzles to accomplish. There are also six different fantasy worlds that players can discover and explore when they progress in the game.
Plotline
Set in a fantasy world, Mahjong Magic Journey 2 features more designs of magical creatures and lands. However, there are no storyline or plot to add more flavor to the game. This would have been a good opportunity to add some interesting characters to add some depth to the game experience.
Gameplay
The game mechanics of Mahjong has that similarity with that from your standard match icon games. The object of the game is to collect all the golden tiles that are scattered in the board and layered with other Mahjong tiles, you must collect of them with major moves as possible.
You do not need to learn the entire rules and mechanics of Mahjong in order to enjoy Mahjong Magic Journey 2, but it is recommended if you plan to take the game seriously so it will be easier to earn higher scores. You select on certain tiles by clicking on it and find its matching pair around the board, doing so will remove them from the board and adds to your score, the faster you can take out more Mahjong tiles, the higher you score multiplier will become, but you need to continue taking out more tiles as the multiplier meter goes down gradually.
However, do take note that you cannot take out any certain tiles that are still under a layer of tiles, you must take the tiles above first before you can access them. There are some conditions for certain types of Mahjong tiles, like for example numbered tiles can only be matched with identical numbers and colors, while some icons can only be matched with the same icons and finally season tiles can be matched with any kind of season tiles. Also, take note that the golden tiles can be matched with normal tiles as long as the conditions of the other types of tiles apply.
You can toggle which tiles are accessible on the board by clicking on the lower left button, and you have an option to reshuffle the entire board in case you are having trouble complete the current layout, but the shuffle button is limited and you can activate it but landing more points by pairing more tiles.
Completing the stage will give you the score results depending on how many tiles were taken out and how many moves were consumed. There are objectives found in every stage that when completed, will give you keys, these can be used in unlocking more content. The conditions on the objectives are very straightforward, some include using up less moves per level or achieving a certain amount of points, but it would still provide some challenge to the players depending the difficulty level.
There are several stages that the players will take, but they must complete the available levels to unlock the new ones. Some of these levels have unique designs on their playing boards that can catch any player’s attention. There is a total of six different world level with different themes that the players can explore, however it is more on just background changes during a Mahjong match.
These levels also add more difficulty with the first world focus on the introduction of the game and with the succeeding worlds provides some challenging levels to test your skills. A skilled player can probably complete the entire game consisting of 200+ levels under 6 hours.
Unfortunately, there are no additional game modes available in Mahjong Magic Journey 2, it would have been nice if there is a story mode to make the game more interesting or maybe some gallery mode where any unlocked content can be previewed such as concept arts or animated clips to increase the replay value.
Community
With some many Mahjong games available on the internet, the size of the community for this game is rather small or sometimes non-existent. There are no possible modes for multiplayer matches or even leaderboards as the game is purely a single player experience.
Graphics/ Sound
The art direction has that painted portrait style, though it may not sound bad, but the lack of other interacting characters make the game feel dull. Only one character portrait is shown and that is all that is available. It would be nice to have more characters featured in the game for more depth.
The background music feels a bit off, though it is understandable that the Mahjong game is originated in the Asian culture, the overall design of the game is heavily inspired on Western culture, so the Asian string instruments may feel a bit out of place to the overall feel of the art direction.
One nice feature in the game is the option to change the tile design, players can choose from the traditional Majhong tiles to Western inspired tiles with matching dragons and fairies or just a modern themed tiles for those who are tired of the typical fantasy theme.
Conclusion
Mahjong Magic Journey 2 feels like there are no improvements from its first game. It would have been nice to add more game modes to add more variety as well as some interacting characters. But if players are looking for more levels of Mahjong challenges, maybe they can still give this game another chance as it can still provide hours of Mahjong content.
