Summary
Rogue Glitch Ultra is a funky neon-infused 2D action-platformer roguelike, featuring tons of weapons, cosmetics, characters, and items to unlock, both local and online co-op support, and plenty of upgrades to purchase. Every run is different here, and the game offers plenty of replayability as well! So, dive right into the fray and start blasting away at those pesky glitches in this thrilling roguelike, Rogue Glitch Ultra!
Gameplay
Rogue Glitch Ultra does away with all the “frills”, like having an introduction or a story, by launching you straight into the hub, a place where you can purchase upgrades for your character (using Malbytes that you can earn by defeating bosses), swap characters, and even change its appearance. There’s a nifty tutorial that you can hop into to learn the game’s basics, including the fact that you can wall and double jump in this game, as well as perform a stomp attack on enemies, similar to the classic Mario games. The hub is also the place where you can view the game’s difficulty as well, which I assume increases the more proficient you get at the game.
You’ll start off the game in the Megabyte Forest and eventually make your way to the end from there. However, true to its roguelike roots, every failed run will return you to the very first zone, where you’ll have to start over. Similar to other games within the genre as well, the goal of almost every “room” you head into is to destroy all enemies, and this is made easier as your character auto-attacks in this game. Only then will you be able to choose which room to proceed to next.
Enemies, when destroyed, will also net you some “progress points”. These points are cumulative across all your playthroughs. Once the progress bar is filled, you’ll then unlock a new item that will start to appear in a run. There are plenty for you to unlock in this game, and the game even helpfully helps you keep track of your unlocks via the Unlocks section on the main menu.
Of course, there are other types of rooms that you’ll encounter along the way, including the treasure and “wheel of fortune” room, where you can get a free item, and the time challenge room in which your skills will be tested as you need to destroy all enemies within a minute. Every location also has a boss room where you’ll need to take on the boss of that location. Each boss in this game comes with unique attack and ability patterns that you can pick up pretty easily, at least at the start. However, to avoid getting hit and dying in the process might be an entirely different story. Defeating the boss will then unlock the next location.
Rogue Glitch Ultra is a game that has tons of different loot that you may have the luck to encounter during your playthrough. Although this isn’t exactly unique to this game, you’ll even get to see a preview of the item in action before you decide to pick the thing up or not. This feature isn’t very prevalent in games, especially in roguelikes, unfortunately, but it’s a really nice feature to have in a game where every item can really change up how you do battle.
Community
Although you can play the game in single-player mode, you might be interested to know that Rogue Glitch Ultra supports both local and online co-op mode as well, up to a total of 4 players. So, if you and your buddies are looking for a game to play, this might just be it! The game also comes with a Twitch mod mode that can be accessed during launch.
Graphics/ Sound
Rogue Glitch Ultra’s graphics feature vibrant neon colors that give it that sci-fi-slash-retro-look reminiscence of Geometry Dash, which is on-theme for the game. In terms of sound, the game features its selection of upbeat 8-bit tunes that match well with the game’s action-oriented gameplay, as well as on certain dance floors if you’re into the dance scene.
Conclusion
If you enjoy 2D roguelikes and platformers in general, Rogue Glitch Ultra is definitely one roguelike you don’t want to miss! Not only is it filled with an impressive amount of content, but the gameplay is also addictively fun, nailing the “one more run” formula that roguelites/roguelikes are (in-)famous for… and for a very reasonable price too, considering the hours of playtime and entertainment it can offer, especially to a fan of the genre.
