Plotline
Being chosen to be reborn by the Goddess of Fate due to your heroic death in your past life, you are given another shot at helping the people of Vidalia. Because you were reborn, you have the usual amnesia issue. Thus, the story in this game will bring you across various locations in Vidalia as you search to find who you were while helping people who need your help along the way! It’s time for your Vidalian adventure to begin - are you ready?
Gameplay
You’ll start off by choosing 1 from the 6 different character classes available in Crystal Saga. They include knight (tanker, can wear heavy armor), rogue, priest, ranger (ranged dps, skilled rangers use bows and traps to overcome opposition before reaching arm’s length), mage (aoe) and beastmaster (control pets, important crowd controller). Each class has their own special abilities and roles to play in the game. For instance, beastmasters are important crowd controllers, while knights are vital as tanks due to their ability to wear heavy armor and, thus, are able to take a lot of punishment. Rangers are on the other hand skilled single target damage-dealing characters while mages specializes in dealing are of effect damage to groups of enemies.
Since you will not be able to change character class after you’ve chosen, so you’ll need to choose carefully. However, if you like, you could always create new characters on the game’s many different servers to experience playing other classes as well! After choosing a class, you are then given a very limited number of 5 avatar pictures of different genders to choose from. In games such as Crystal Saga, there are generally no character customizations.
Once you’re done, you’ll be dropped right into the game. The game features a very comprehensive guide on how to play the game that is tailored to people who has absolutely no knowledge on MMORPGs, thus, if you’re experienced, you may want to skip the tutorial.
Questing in Crystal Saga is pretty much the standard fare for any browser-based MMORPGs. Most quests involve killing certain number of enemies or collect certain quest items from mobs or from the environment. The combat system in this game is pretty simple to understand. You will just need to left click a monster to attack and, after it is dead, press ‘spacebar’ to auto-loot. Your character will automatically use his/her default skill repeatedly, but if you want to use other skills, you can as well!
It’s rather good to note that the quest item drop rate is not too low, thus you won’t be grinding mobs for too long for quest-item-related quests. There’s also an auto-routing feature to help you locate the questing area easily. Sometimes, as you travel around, you may also encounter boss or elite monsters, which can be identified by the special aura around them. Defeating them will usually reward you with valuable equipments and items. However, these mobs are particularly though and it may take you a lot of potions just to try to stay alive!
Potions are the main means to recovery after you’ve already been injured in Crystal Saga. Please take note that potions must be manually used in this game, so you won’t die unnecessarily. Even if you die, you can be respawned at your nearest town for free or you can pay to be respawned at the same spot where you’ve died on. However, chugging potions non-stop isn’t really a good way to play (and to avoid in-game death) this game. If you really want to reduce the effects of battle, a good set or armor is of paramount importance! You can get most of your gear from quests in the earlier levels. Equipments from quests are usually from the same armor set and they will reward you with a special stat bonus if you have every piece from the set equipped.
In Crystal Saga, you can also upgrade your gear’s enchantment level using the Frageron forge. The materials that you’ll need for the forging can be obtained by disenchanting items that you don’t need. Sometimes, you may also earn weapon or armor shards from quests or bosses. These shards when combined can be used to craft a much superior weapon or armor as well!
Perhaps before you start upgrading your external equipments, how about you try upgrading your character skills first? Each class has 2 different skill trees which they may learn from. Unlike the process of choosing your character class, don’t worry too much about making the wrong choice and upgraded or learned a wrong skill – you’ll be allowed a free reset in the future! Furthermore, every level up will gain you 1 skill point, which will be, obviously, placed in the skill tree of your choice, and several stat points. These stat points can be used to increase your character’s stats such as strength, intelligence, agility and endurance. Be sure to place the points in stats that are important for your class. Placing all your points into strength when you’re a mage won’t help you as much as placing those points into a mage-centric stat, such as intelligence. There is also a divine soul option which will be unlocked at level 60 to further improve your character’s stats and abilities.
Besides skill trees and divine soul, Crystal Saga also offers an additional Chi system to its players. Chi technically awards your character with significant stat boosts and, as usual, you can upgrade it as well! You’ll need to refine items to receive amaranthine essences. These essences when combined with Chi essences, which can be bought at the shop, will allow you to gradually progress through the different stages of Chi, namely, spirit, hegemon, immortal and lastly, divine. Each stage you unlock will bestow your character with special stats.
Crystal Saga provides a huge variety of PvE and PvP settings for players to enjoy, but most of them will only be unlocked at higher levels. They include Vidalian legends, heraldry and magic tower. Magic tower is the only PvE encounter that is accessible for lower level players. The game also features a very nice PvP ranking system, called nobility, whereby players who has attain a certain rank will earn medieval-type titles such as vassal or squire. Every successful PvP will earn you PvP badges that can be exchanged for PvP gear too!
The best part in this game is perhaps its pets system. You will get to tame your very first pet at level 10. Once you reached that level, you’ll be brought to Monster Island to capture your first pet. It’s pretty easy to get a pet for yourself - all you need to do is to left click on the mob that you like and use the “tame pet scroll” on it. However, you cannot tame pets that are higher level than yourself, thus, your first pet will definitely be the bear cub since it is the only pet there with a level that is suitable for you. Don’t worry though! You are given 2 additional “tame pet scrolls” that you can use later on to tame higher level pets, such as the crab and the vulture. Don’t forget to train your new pet to increase its stats too! As it battles along your side, it’ll also level up and may sometimes unlock new skills. Pets can be equipped with gear as well!
There are plenty of other interesting features in this game, such as mounts, achievements, AFK mode, wings, imbue, item synthesis and holy favor. Perhaps due to having a tad bit too many features, the game’s interface is truly messy. Even the chat box is blocked by the buttons for many of the above features. It’ll be really nice if the game provide an option to minimize all these buttons.
The game starts off by asking you to select your character’s gender, name and class. There are 5 classes for you to choose from, namely paladin, the powerful armored tank; duelist, who has decimating physical attacks; oracle, with his or her fantastic support magic; hunter, a deadly ranged damage-dealer and mage, who wields devastating magic attacks. Since you are only able to create 1 character on your chosen server, you will need to choose your character class carefully.
Community
Crystal Saga has almost 700 thousand likes on its Facebook fan page and that is quite a sizeable number! The game also has an in-game text-based chat system, which is mainly used by its community to recruit players for raids and dungeons. If you need some help with the game, you can also use the chat system to ask for help from the more experienced players. If you enjoy playing with a guild, you can sign up for one in Crystal Saga as well! Graphics/ Sound
The 2.5D graphics in Crystal Saga looks rather dated despite being released a mere 2 years ago. However, considering that it is a browser-based game, it is still acceptable, though a bit below average. Thankfully, the game balances out by providing excellent music. There is a variety of music provided too! Some sound in the game can be rather soothing, while others are the inspirational sort. There is even a catchy tropical soundtrack for you to enjoy when you reach the forest areas!
Conclusion
Crystal Saga is an interesting browser-based MMORPG from R2 Games that unfortunately does not stand out much from other games in the R2 Games repertoire. The game boasts of having auto-routing for quests, rather complicated yet intricate character and gear improvement systems, a huge range of PvE and PvP encounters to challenge, an AFK system as well as a nice dual-skill tree system. However, it has a really messy interface and a rather typical storyline, which may offset a number of players. Overall though, Crystal Saga presents a solid free-to-play browser-based MMORPG that fans of such games can enjoy! So, brave adventurer, are you ready to take on the world of Vidalia?
