Summary
Containing 25 of AVICII’s biggest hits, AVICII Invector is an action rhythm game that is as well-made as the songs you’ll be able to enjoy as you play. The game features a gameplay that isn't too punishing and the effects even for players new to the genre, and cool, neon effects and animations that look incredible when coupled with electronic music. As a bonus, the game even comes with a nice little story about a spirited collector pilot who’s on a special mission… and what the mission is actually about? Well, that’s for us to find out!
Plotline
The game puts you into the shoes of a spunky collector pilot who is off on a special mission on a clunky old spacecraft. However, as the story progresses, you’ll learn more about the girl and the mission she’s on.
However, I should also mention that the story is fairly short and isn’t exactly the main focus of the game. The focus is most definitely on the gameplay which is brilliantly well-done as well as the masterpieces that AVICII has released during his lifetime, including 3 newer tracks that are completed and released after his untimely death.
Gameplay
AVICII Invector starts off with a calibration session where the game will determine, based on your inputs, whether your taps is an “ok”, “good”, “great” or “perfect”. Like all rhythm games, you’ll want to get as many perfects in a row as possible due to its combo system, and this calibration session is actually a lot more important than many would believe.
Once you’re done with calibration, the game immediately drops you into a short playthrough and this is where most players would fail quite a bit mainly because of the lack of instructions. You’ll have no idea how to switch lanes or sides or that there’s a free-flying mode that uses the WASD and not the arrow keys as I’d expect.
Due to this, it’ll be nice if the devs can add in a screen with the controls (based on the players’ selected input of choice, whether it is keyboard or controller) before the game starts. It’s not really a huge issue since I can just check out the controls list after that playthrough and I can always figure things out later on, which I did, but I just felt so helpless when I see a cue that I want to hit but have no idea how to do so.
AVICII Invector isn’t exactly a very punishing rhythm game in the sense that even if you messed up a few small parts of the music, you might still a pretty high score... even on hard mode (there are 3 modes in total). However, for veteran rhythm game players, you should know that you can easily bump up the difficulty by tapping on the boost key (enter). Boosting will drastically increase the speed you play but it’ll also grant you a nice score boost. So it’s a bit of a win-win, especially if you’re really great at this type of games!
As mentioned, AVICII Invector comes with 25 of his biggest hits, including 3 that are released posthumously. These tracks are split into various “worlds” that you can then “explore”. Each world consists of 4 tracks and you can unlock new worlds by at least completing the previous 4 tracks on easy mode. I’m not sure if score matters but I didn’t have any issue with my 96-99% score on easy #flex.
I should also point out that the game does look like it’d work really great on the mobile platform as well. However, I’m not sure if there are plans to port the game over to the mobile platform… yet.
Community
Besides single player mode, AVICII also comes with a multiplayer mode where you can play with up to 3 of your friends on split screen. Of course, most of the players who play this game would probably be a fan of AVICII’s music or at least are now one, so you can definitely be able to discuss anything and everything AVICII through the game’s Steam forum.
Graphics/ Sound
Besides top-notch electronic music from the legend himself, AVICII Invector has fantastic neon aesthetics that really matches well with the beats. The animations and effects that appear with your every tap look incredible as well, and need I say more about the various space-themed backgrounds? They fit perfectly with the overall effects of the gameplay!
Conclusion
AVICII Invector is a breathtaking tribute to one of the greatest DJs of our generation. The gameplay in this game is brilliantly well-done and isn’t too punishing, even to players who are new to the action rhythm genre. Besides the brilliant effects and animations that matched so well with the music, there’s also a nice story about a spunky collector pilot. Definitely a must-play for fans of AVICII’s music and rhythm games!
