Summary
Rhythm Sprout: Sick Beats & Bad Sweets is a cute, adventure-driven action rhythm game set in a fantasy world of vegetables and sweets. Playing as the hero of the Vegetable Kingdom, Sprout, you’ve been ordered by King Brock to eliminate King Sugar Daddy and his minions of sweets and other sugary treats, and put a stop to the invasion… oh and Princess Cauliflower is also missing and you are tasked to find and retrieve her. Travel across the land slaying anyone who stands in your way with your epic dance moves and sword work, and return home in triumph!
Plotline
King Brock summoned you, his knight, Sprout to the throne room. It seems like King Sugar Daddy and his minions of sugary treats are invading the Vegetable Kingdom and the King needs your help to save his kingdom. Travel across the land to track down King Sugar Daddy and put a stop to his senseless invasion once and for all.
Oh, and Princess Cauliflower is also missing. It’s probably best to find and retrieve her as well.
The plot in Rhythm Sprout is filled with light, silly humor that might be a hit-or-miss for some, mainly due to how incredulous the story can be. However, it is this very silliness for both the storytelling and the many colorful characters that made me fall in love with the game in the first place.
Gameplay
Before you start, the game will have you go through a manual calibration, much like AVICII Invector did, to determine your input lag and offset it, so there’s no blaming the game for missing notes because of input latency now.
Rhythm Sprout: Sick Beats & Bad Sweets comes with a 20-level-long Main Story, with a Prequel Story which tells the backstory of Sprout and how he became a knight, and challenging Bonus Levels (of difficulties between 7 to 10 out of 10) that consist of 5 levels each. You can unlock the next level by completing the previous level in the Main Story and Prequel Story, but for Bonus Levels, you can only unlock new ones by earning more stars.
You see, each level you play will grant you up to seven stars in total, with one being awarded for completing the level, and three more each that are only given if you reached certain thresholds for the score targets and the combo targets.
As with many deceptively-cute games, you mustn’t be misled by Rhythm Sprout’s cutesy and adorable looks! The game has many challenges that will put even the most hardcore rhythm fans at the edge of their seats! For starters, in addition to tapping on left and right notes as they appear, there are also Dodge Notes that you have to tap on. These notes are actually more important in the grand scheme of things because, unlike the left and right notes, you’ll lose a health point every time you miss these. If you lose all your lives, it’s game over and you’ll have to restart the level.
Thankfully, the game does give you a way to restore your health. One way is to rack up combos. You’ll restore one health point for every 20 combos you get. There’s also the Sugar Rush power-up that you can activate once a level. When activated, not only will every note you hit give an extra 400 score points and that every note can be hit by any button, but you’ll also instantly restore your health to the maximum.
Of course, as you progress, these meddlesome Trap Notes will start to pop up, especially for more challenging levels. You’ll want to avoid tapping on these notes as a cloud of black smoke will billow up and partially obscure your view if you do, making it easier to miss the subsequent notes. Although this isn’t technically a challenge and is more of a separate way to earn more points, sometimes, you may encounter prompts for activating Sprout’s Finishing Move. When that happens, you’ll need to tap on both the left and right buttons as fast as you can. The faster you tap the buttons, the more points you’ll get. It’s that simple!
After completing a level, you’ll unlock the EX mode which allows you to replay the same level with additional challenges to earn more points. These challenges include Turbo mode, where you’ll play the same notes and song but faster; Mirror mode, which flips the screen, changing the positions of the left and right keys; and the Randomizer that shuffles the notes to generate a unique beatmap.
In case there’s a level that has you stumped, know that there’s really no need to keep hammering your head against the wall if you don’t want to. Each level also comes with a Beginner Mode that you can activate before heading into a level that greatly simplifies the gameplay. For instance, instead of having to press three different keys, often in quick succession, you just need to press two – the Dodge and the Music Notes, since the level no longer differentiate Music Notes into left and right and you can tap on either button to hit these notes. This game mode also has easier timing, zero trap notes, and lets you play with more lives, meaning it’s more accommodating of mistakes.
Rhythm Sprout: Sick Beats & Bad Sweets isn’t a long game. It took me around 2 hours to complete the Main Story and a further 30 minutes for the Prequel Story. To further encourage players to replay the levels and attempt to get better scores and combos, Rhythm Sprout has plenty of cool skins for both Sprout’s outfit and weapon that you can unlock and collect. This includes various colored tracksuits and cool outfits inspired by other TinyBuild titles like Hello Neighbor. You can even turn Sprout’s default sword into a baseball bat or the shovel from Hello Neighbor as well.
Most of these skins can be unlocked by likely acing their respective levels (you’ll notice that each skin is tied to a specific level in the Main Story), but there are also some that can be unlocked simply by earning a set number of stars.
Graphics/ Sound
The brightly-colored graphics in this game are designed to look adorable and cute, lulling you into a false sense of coziness that is quickly disrupted by how difficult some of the rhythm gameplay can be. Due to the similarities in terms of the theme as well, Rhythm Sprout’s worldbuilding does remind me a bit of Overcooked.
The sound of the game is where Rhythm Sprout truly shine! Although I can’t say I’m a fan of every single soundtrack here, I have to admit that they are very well composed and produced. The music type ranges across several genres, including EDM, Lo-fi, Hip-Hop, Disco, Metal, and more! The beats are great here and can really get your head to nod along.
Conclusion
In a nutshell, with so many game modes and extra levels to enjoy, a whimsical story, music that’s just siiiicccckkk, plus tons of skins to unlock, Rhythm Sprout: Sick Beats & Bad Sweets is a truly fantastic action-rhythm game that will definitely appeal to avid fans of the genre.
