Summary

Giants Uprising is an action-adventure game in which you play as a giant who has escaped from a gladiatorial arena where you were expected to fight and die for the amusement of your human captors. However, the quest to escape turned into one of vengeance when you realized that the enemy has razed your beloved home to the ground, slaughtered a bunch of your people and captured the rest. With your newfound human ally, you’ll embark on a journey to quench your thirst for revenge and possibly bring an end to this unwanted war.

Plotline

The game starts with you waking up at the arena after being captured and having a human clambering onto your shoulders without your consent. Before brushing the guy off though, he told you that you’re supposed to be working together in the next arena fight and that he’s one of the members of the few tribes left who still honor the pact the humans had with the giants that allowed them to live in peace for centuries… until now that is.

During the fight, you found a chance to escape and you grabbed it. There were lots of stomping about as you crush your enemies, and throwing stuff at the towers and barriers that hampered your way. Finally, you made it into the forest and to relative safety.

However, as you made your way back home along with your newfound friend, you’ve noticed something’s wrong. The enemy has somehow broken through your people’s defenses and the villages in the outskirts lay in smoking ruins. There were plenty of enemy encampments too.

Maybe it’s time to stop playing the defense card and start getting more aggressive. It’s perhaps time to bring the fight to the very people who started it all!

Gameplay

This game manages to capture that feeling of power and strength that comes with playing as a giant in its gameplay. Not only can you stomp your feet or cause a shockwave by bringing down your fists on the ground, but you can also equip your giant with makeshift weapons or even something from good old Mother Nature, like a stone or an entire tree trunk. You can hurl those objects at towers that may be out of reach for your fists too. Causing so much mayhem has never been so entertaining!

Despite moving relatively slowly, much like what you’d expect a giant to be, giants aren’t all lumbering oafs either! The giants in this game can be pretty nimble when they need to be. You can dodge behind shelters fairly quickly when needed to, such as when trying to avoid getting impaled by a giant-sized javelin fired from a ballista or having the wind knocked right out of you by a cannonball.

There are some giant traps that you will do well to keep an eye out too. There are the usual bear traps which are super-sized so they can trap giants like yourself, and there are the spikey barricades that will hurt you if you walk, run, or dodge right into them. The humans will also try to hold you down with ropes, much like how the people of Lilliput did, but unlike a knocked-out Gulliver, you won’t be taking all of this lying down… or being tied down, as a matter of fact!

In giant-vs-giant fights, on the other hand, it’s all about the brawl here. This means fists and arms swinging, and from time to time, if you can get ahold of something, a weapon can be thrown into the mix as well.

In fact, if you want to make sure you win every fight though, know this – Block is the single most useful skill in this game besides stomp (for human troops), hurl (for taking out distant towers), and dodge, because it allows you to take no damage from the enemy giant. This allows you a brief second opening after a successful block since your enemy will look stunned for a bit, and you can then “chain punch” the fella. Rinse and repeat until you win.

However, as fun as the game can be, I think there’s a bit of a missed opportunity to get the human ally who’s riding on the giant’s shoulders to pitch in during a fight instead of just sitting there. He could, for instance, equip himself with a bow and arrow or little bombs to help thin the herd. In giant-vs-giant fights, he could try to disadvantage the opponent with blinding dust as well. Of course, having him add in some colorful commentary would be pretty fun too, I reckon!

There’s also a pretty big issue with the game’s UI when I was reviewing Giants Uprising. Despite being an Early Access title, I still expect the game’s interface to be functional. Instead, I was greeted with a mission screen where I couldn’t select the next mission. I couldn’t access the Skill Tree either – the game just glitches out. I really hope the devs are working to address these pressing issues.

Giants Uprising is a single-player adventure so you can’t really wreak havoc on those puny humans with a pal or two. That being said, the game is still in early access and if you have any feedback that you think might help, the game’s Steam discussion page is the place to voice those suggestions.

Graphics/ Sound

Except for that one time when you’re out in the open and can actually see the sun, most of the game takes part in the canopied gloom of the forest likely during the evenings or at night. Not really a downside I guess, but it does make for less-appealing screenshots as you can see here in my review. The sounds are rather good though. I really like the voice acting here.

Conclusion

If you love stomping on puny humans and turning wooden houses into matchsticks, then Giants Uprising is the game for you. Not only can you wreak havoc on your enemies, but you can also hurl items to take out cannonball-shooting towers and smash stuff. You get to feel strong and powerful because, after all, you’re a giant. The game comes with a storyline that’s pretty engaging as well.

However, currently, it feels more like a demo than an early access game, mainly because there’s only one mission that you can complete in under 2 hours. Plus, the game feels rushed and many of its features and UI aren’t really done yet. In fact, I suspect a UI glitch had me force-stopped the game mainly because there’s nothing much I could do at the mission screen. Due to this, I would recommend keeping the game wishlisted first and checking back in once the game has more content and is polished up a bit more.
