Summary

Tinykin is a fun and casual Pikmin-like adventure-based 3D platformer, with collect-a-thon features, where you play as the archeologist and researcher, Milodane. He lives on the planet of Aegis and is obsessed in finding the home planet of humanity. One day, he finally tracked down an ancient signal of human origin to a planet and decided to investigate. Needless to say, he’s about to have an adventure of his lifetime!

Plotline

In this game, you play as Milodane, an archeologist and researcher in the most prestigious university on the planet Aegis. As is his job, he studied various relics, artefacts and fossils to realize that humans did not originate on Aegis. Determined to find the home planet of humanity, he tracked down an ancient signal of human origin to a planet and decided to investigate.

However, his landing wasn’t perfect and his equipment is ruined. Thankfully, he met an eccentric bug called Ridmi who claimed he could help. You see, he’s building a device that can go beyond what seems to be a 90s home of someone called Ardwin, but he needs various components that he couldn’t get by himself.

Milo, on the other hand, could help since he seems to have befriended the local Tinykins who come with a variety of abilities. Hopefully, with the Tinykins’ help, Milo will be able to finally assemble the components needed to complete the device and return home!

Gameplay

In terms of its gameplay, Tinykin is, at its core, an exploration-driven 3D adventure platformer that’s set in a miniature world (the home of someone called Ardwin) where your character, Milo, is about the size of an ant. As a platformer, you’ll be expected to jump, glide – thanks to your bubble-glider – and climb shoestrings. None of them are all too challenging since it’s not a precision-based game though some quick reflexes may be needed at times, so even if you’re not all too familiar with the genre, you should be able to easily ease right in.

You even get a soapboard, a.k.a. a “soap skateboard”, that will allow you to traverse large distances quickly and also slide along strings of silk, which serve as shortcuts in this game. It feels so effortless switching from running (or doing anything prior) to sliding on the soapboard and back to running again in this game. The controls are tight, smooth and very responsive.

Considering that you will need to go to some really high places, sometimes, you just slide a bit too far and ended up falling from great heights. If this happens, don’t worry! There’s no death in this game. If you fall, you will either teleport back to the position prior to your fall or you might just land on something soft enough to break your fall.

The level design here is incredibly well-done as well! Although every level may look overwhelming at first due to how big everything looks, once you unlocked shortcuts – keep an eye out for little white furry bundles with tiny red spikes on them that you can throw a red tinykin at - and familiarize yourself with the layout, it doesn’t seem as daunting. You start every level with no tinykins at all, and you’ll collect them by running over and popping their larvae sacs as you go along. Note that tinykins aren’t transferable from one level to another in this game.

Tinykins, the game’s namesake, are one of the most important aspects of the game. Similar to Pikmin, the tinykins come in many different shapes and colors, though their sizes are generally the same. The pink tinykins, the very first of the lot that you’ll meet, are strong and can move or carry heavy objects.

The second kind of tinykins, the red ones, are explosive and can be used to ignite candles, unlock shortcuts, and blast away obstacles. There are also green ones that can stack up to form ladders upon command, blue ones that can redirect electricity, and yellow ones that build bridges. The game introduces a new tinykin every new level so you won’t feel overwhelmed.

These tinykins are useful in completing both the main objective of every level, which progresses the main storyline, and also the entirely-optional side objectives or quests where you can help the locals in said level with whatever problems they encounter. These objectives are tracked via the pause menu and will reward you with more pollen. There are also other objectives that aren’t tracked such as collecting all the missing letters and returning them to the postman or popping open all the flowers in Foliana Heights.

Not to mention, the game itself is a collect-a-thon in the sense that you’re expected to collect all the pollen you see. Once you’ve collected enough pollen and reached a milestone as indicated in the game, you can then exchange them with Sikaru the brewer for an extra bubble glider. Having more bubble glider will allow you to glide longer.

Besides pollen, there are also museum items that you’ll need to return to Prattle at the Ardwin Museum. Once returned, you can get Prattle to explain the significance of each item. Achievement hunter would love this game too, though there are plenty of hidden tinykins and pollen that can be really tricky to find.

Tinykin is designed to be child-friendly too. It doesn’t have any kind of real violence - unless you call red tinykins exploding “violent” – blood, gore or mature language. Couple that with the adorable characters, bright colors, interesting gameplay, and fantastic level designs, and Tinykin is the perfect game for kids to enjoy.

Graphics/ Sound

From the graphics, it’s obvious that Tinykin is designed with visuals that can appeal to both adults and children alike. The vibrant colors made each level look so lively! Even if your view of Milo is blocked by something (happens rarely but it does happen), the game helpfully highlights his outline so you can see, any item you can interact with. The game also has a range of fun and catchy soundtracks that fit perfectly with the game.

However, if you often get motion sickness from playing games no thanks to Bloom and Motion Blur effects, you’ll want to take note that Tinykin has Bloom on by default. You might want to disable it in the settings before diving into the game just to make your gaming experience so much better.

Conclusion

Tinykin is without a doubt one of the best adventure-driven, Pikmin-like 3D platformer and perhaps even the handful of best indie titles released this year. Not only does it have incredible level designs with plenty of secrets for you to find and areas to explore, the game also comes with plenty of interesting characters, lots of artefacts to collect, and a ridiculously fun gameplay that can appeal to players of a wide age range. So, if you’re looking for a 3D platformer that can keep you engrossed for hours, Tinykin is definitely one game you’ll want to play!
