Plotline

In this game, you play as one of the minor demons in hell, specifically Nate, the Demon of Bad Taste. By happenstance, he was “chosen” by his boss, Satan, to make sure that his boss’s favorite pie would be made and delivered in time for his birthday and Satan doesn’t take no for an answer. So, off he goes to the kitchen where he now needs to help the chef collect all the most disgusting ingredients by visiting the many worlds that are somehow connected to hell via elevator.

Gameplay

Hell Pie is a 3D platformer adventure and as such, you can expect to perform feats such as jumping across wide gaps and making it onto the other side in one piece. Of course, to spice things up, you’ll have access to plenty of cool and useful maneuvers such as being able to double jump, use your cherub pet to swing yourself further and higher, and to even wall and pole climbing.

As you progress, you’ll also be able to sacrifice cute, innocent and oh-so-very-fluffy unilambs at certain altars to gain new “horn” abilities that you can swap between, such as the rocket horns which makes it possible to leap across much wider gaps while running across crumbling platforms. Gaining a new “horn” ability will trigger a compulsory tutorial obstacle challenge where you’ll be able to test out the new ability so by the time you return to the where you left off, you should be sufficiently trained as to how to use your new ability.

In addition to abilities and cool parkour moves, there are some interesting platforming designs too, such as a beam that works like a seesaw, and piles of seemingly random stuff that turned out to be very bouncy.

Your default horn is also very helpful since it works like a sonar system, allowing you to quickly identify points-of-interest like locating nearby teleport stones. These teleport stones are very useful in reducing unnecessary travel time, though considering how many gems you can collect along the way, some players might enjoy making the trip manually anyhow.

Alternatively, you could bring up the map to view all of these points-of-interest but this means you’ll have to pause the game in order to do so, which might not be as ideal depending on personal preferences.

There are many worlds that you can visit in Hell Pie and all of them are designed to be an open-world-styled platforming adventure. However, each world also features somewhat instanced platform-based challenges where you’ll be expected to complete the entire run without abandoning it halfway just to go do something else. Well… actually, you can do that, but you’ll then need to replay the entire challenge from the very beginning.

Besides the impressive worldbuilding, the thing that makes or breaks a 3D platformer is the controls and boy! Are you in for a treat! Needless to say, the controls here are simply outstanding! Even by using an unconventional control system, the good old keyboard and mouse, the game plays out smoothly and is very responsive to my oftentimes frantic tap on the keyboard. The mouse works great as a camera-controller, allowing you to rotate the camera about just so you can see Nate properly even if he’s behind some tall shelves.

Hell Pie has some light combat elements as well, where you’ll get to swing your cherub pet like a flail. Nate has 3 lives and will lose one if he gets injured. However, every time you respawn at a checkpoint, you’ll get all three lives back, so it’s really no biggie, especially considering that the game has plenty of aptly-placed checkpoints throughout a platforming challenge.

As with most 3D platformers, the game has many gems for you to collect. Considering that they respawn after a while, it doesn’t really matter if you don’t “get them all”. Not to mention, the game hides many more gems in “loot chests” like destructible barrels and crates, and even in coconuts. Sometimes, you may get some bonus gems by interacting with something, specifically with the toilet flush button.

Now, you might be wondering, why collect gems? Well, the game has an insane range of must-have cosmetic outfits that you can buy, not just for Nate, but for your cherub pet, Nugget, as well! There are many outfits that can help you fit in with the locals in the world you’re exploring in, such as swapping out the drab office wear for something more tropical for the first world, a peaceful little island called Sashimi Bay.

Aside from gems, there are other collectibles that you can… well, collect. Some, like the cans of Candy Meat, is needed for your cherub to unlock new abilities, while others, like the Chinese Lucky Cats that are so prized by Greed, will allow you entry into previously-locked rooms back in Sin Inc HQ. These special collectibles are typically harder to reach than most and may require some clever use of the environment and a very observant eye.

Graphics/ Sound

The graphics in Hell Pie is nothing short of breathtaking! Even in hell the visuals look impressively good, let alone the beautiful tropical island that you’ll eventually head to. I might also be a bit bias though since I do have a penchant for cel-shaded art.

In terms of sound, the game features background music and sound effects that perfectly match the scene you’re in, whether it is receiving your orders from your boss, Satan; jumping across lava pits at Hell’s very own supermarket, or gamboling around an ever-sunny tropical island. Even the elevator music is funny.

Conclusion

Fans of 3D platforming adventure, listen up! Hell Pie is a one title you simply don’t want to miss, so if it’s not yet on your radar, it should be! From its devilishly-zany and oftentimes crude humor to its gorgeous graphics, to even its smooth and very responsive controls, this game has all the makings of a triple A platforming title. Hell Pie is exactly what a lovingly-crafted video game should be – Fun, with a capital F!

Oh, in case you’re wondering and that the videos on the Steam page haven’t really clued you in yet… no, this game is most definitely not made for kids to play.
