Summary
Tiny Troopers: Global Ops is a top-down, twin-stick shoot ‘em up that features those adorable tiny troopers from the beloved Tiny Troopers franchise. In this game, you’ll get to control a band of 3D chibi-like mercenaries as they embark on and complete some of the most hilarious missions. Earn as much cash from missions as possible, upgrade your tiny troopers, and have fun customizing them to your liking!
Plotline
Tiny Troopers: Global Ops contains six standalone stories for each of the six unique missions, with each story being funnier than the next, whether is it trying to “rescue” a “missing Persian prince” to investigating for any possible truth behind those generic scam emails that we all hate with a certain fiery passion. There are some “filler levels” in between that doesn’t really seem to push forward the narrative much, but considering how short each level can be, it’s not a biggie.
Gameplay
As a twin-stick-style top-down shooter, Tiny Troopers: Global Ops puts you in the thick of action with your teammates, whether controlled by the AI or by actual human players, dodging projectiles from enemies and firing back at them with vengeance. The shooting here has some amount of auto-aim so all you need to do is to just point in the right direction and hope your bullets land.
The game comes with several fun primary weapons for you to use, ranging from the default pistol to the SMG. However, the most entertaining weapons of all though is, without a doubt, their selection of secondary weapons, including grenades, rocket launchers, shotguns, flamethrowers, machine guns, and more. Unlike their primary weapons, your troopers don’t get deployed with any secondary weapons in their inventory. Instead, you can only pick them up on the mission map itself as you navigate the maze-like area to reach your objectives.
Some secondary weapons usually pack quite the explosive punch… well, quite literally. This is especially helpful since they can instantly destroy any watchtowers or other structures with insanely long health bars that you’d want to take out with a single, well-placed hit. Note that there are two ways you can go about doing this in this game – you can either select the weapon using the number hotkeys, aim at your target and then shoot or throw; or you could use the Quick-Fire option (via right clicking) that will quickly hurl or shoot your secondary weapon at the indicated spot. Although the Quick-Fire option can be prone to errors, it’s fast enough to really blend well into all the action, allowing you to quickly take out huge enemy spawns as they appear. Oh, and there are limited number of uses per secondary weapon, so make sure to make them count!
There are other helpful pick-ups that you can grab while playing a mission, including health packs that restore a rather substantial amount of health for the entire team and the ammo pick-up which replenishes the number of uses available for the secondary weapons you’ve picked up. To earn even more score points, sometimes, there side and hidden objectives that you can complete, oftentimes within a set time limit, as well as plenty of collectibles, namely dog tags and medals, but sometimes, you may also find secrets like the golden chicken trophy which will get you a whole lot of points – just make sure to keep an eye out for any sparkles on the ground.
Of course, if you can avoid killing friendlies – the non-suicide-bomber chickens, and save any friendlies from being killed by the enemy, you can save yourself having some score points deducted from your total. The difficulty level also plays a role in determining how many bonus points you get at the end of each level, with higher difficulty offering more points. Considering that the Normal difficulty here is quite easy, even if I’m not exactly a pro at twin-stick shooters, I’d say if you’re a hardcore fan of the genre, you might want to move that difficulty scale way up to really get a challenge and get the most out of this bonus.
At the end of the day, your score points will be totaled and you’ll earn a set amount of Experience tokens to spend later at the HQ. These tokens are very important since you’ll need them to replace dead troopers in your team and upgrade your troopers at the Armory in the troopers’ HQ. Upgrades are crucial since enemies do get more challenging later on. Plus, your troopers move quite slow at first and that the dodge cooldown can be maddeningly long sometimes. With the proper upgrades, you can slightly alleviate these issues so that they are more bearable. You might also want to know that even if you failed a level, you will still earn some amount of experience so you can easily upgrade your troopers and attempt the level again.
Each level you dive into is designed to be short and sweet, taking less than 10 minutes to complete even if you take the time to check every nook and cranny for hidden items. Taking into account that each mission comes with 8 levels in total and that there are 6 unique missions, you should be able to enjoy fighting your way through 48 increasingly challenging levels.
Tired of all the action and want to take a break? Well, you can kick back and relax at the Barracks in the HQ and just have fun customizing your tiny troopers. You can change their looks by changing their heads, body, and skin color. You can unlock new cosmetics for your troopers by picking up drops while on missions, some of which are hidden so you really got to go look for them.
Community
Tiny Troopers: Global Ops is designed with co-op (up to 4 players total) in mind and has the facilities to support both online and local co-op. However, if you’re more of a lone wolf, the game does give you AI-controlled troopers to recruit to your team. They aren’t the best shot or teammates due to the often-fatal situations they will sometimes put themselves in, but it’s sometimes better than nothing. You can always choose to not revive your fellow AI teammates once they are down for the count, and not have them replaced at the HQ if you simply want to play the game completely alone.
The competitive aspect of the game comes in the form of leaderboards. You see, your score for every level will be ranked on the leaderboard so you can see how well you do against other players in the community. Naturally, if you really want your tiny troopers to be “the best of the best… OF THE BEST”, you might want to revisit each level and try to eek out as many score points as you can.
Graphics/ Sound
The cartoonish art style graphics in Tiny Troopers: Global Ops are fantastic! The game is incredibly detailed, with beautifully designed environments and a wide range of enemy units that don’t look like they are reskins. The adorable chibi-like tiny troopers are also so well-designed and animated.
In terms of sound, I like how they filter the voice acting for all the tiny trooper characters through a “Chipmunk voice effect filter”, giving them that squeaky cute voice. The music works great to set the theme of the location you’re fighting in, but personally, it’s not something that at all memorable.
Conclusion
All in all, Tiny Troopers: Global Ops is a fun and engaging top-down, twin-stick shooter that is well worth checking out for fans of the genre and franchise. The gameplay is well-suited for players of all skill levels, depending on the difficulty you choose, and the progression is very rewarding.
While each level doesn’t take up too much time, cumulatively, these minutes add up fast and you can at least be able to rack up at least 6 hours or so of playtime just by completing the missions once. Then, the game’s replayability kicks in and you may want to replay the levels just to get a higher score, the collectible or hidden objectives you’ve missed, or just to try the game at a much higher difficulty. So, rest assured that you’ll definitely be able to get a worthwhile bang for your buck if you decide to buy this game.
