Arcanium: Rise of Akhan is a turn-based, role-playing, roguelike fantasy game developed by Supercombo, Inc. and published by Rogue Games, Inc., which has recently released its 1.0 version out of early access. It features a well-written narrative campaign on top of solid gameplay mechanics encouraging replayability even when the tale has ended.

Plotline

The plot is a story you might have heard told in a million other fantasy franchises, but they say, “if it ain’t broken, don’t fix it.” Two opposing godlike beings are butting their heads to establish dominance. One is on the side of all that is good, and the other is a manifestation of evil. Classic.

This dark goddess is now sending shards crashing onto the region, mutating the fauna into bloodthirsty creatures. This is the age-old plan to finally get rid of anything that could stand in the way of her goals. Until three heroes showed up to put a stop to all of these shenanigans, they would battle tooth and nail. Liberate all the infested regions and work to find the mastermind pulling all the strings and conclude their epic adventure there, hopefully preventing a calamity from happening on the way.

Gameplay

Experience the heroes' point of view through a genuinely engaging gameplay design. Arcanium: Rise of Akhan features a procedurally generated open-world card and strategy mechanic. To explain, players will move around the world of Arzu one hex at a time. Within these are various encounters or buildings to interact with.

An average encounter happens when stepping into an enemy-occupied part of the map. Do not worry, and this is marked so you can tactically approach the situation after planning around it. Combat is resolved through the use of abilities and consumables but in the form of cards. You control three party members at a time. They each have customizable decks and can be equipped with artifacts and other equipment to boost their stats.

The said cards that are the backbone of combat also come in different flavors. The first two distinctions are melee and ranged. The prior can only be used on the lane directly in front of a character. The latter can be used against the adjacent enemy. There is also an area of effect attacks and self-targeting abilities. Mastering the timing in what card to use at what time is a sure way to beat any adversary foolish to face them.

To finish clearing a region, the party must reach the shard and beat the boss at the end of the stage. Although exploration is very much encouraged, be wary of the threat meter. When this bar is full, all of the enemies get a power-up and upgraded to elite status. This means they will hit harder and drop more valuable loot. It is a fantastic risk versus reward system.

Community

Arcanium: Rise of Akhan is strictly a single-player experience. Even though the card and deck-building mechanics lend themselves well for a possibly successful multiplayer game, the developers opted to focus on the roguelike aspects and campaign. Thanks to this clear goal, the team has managed to polish all the critical parts.

Graphics/Sound

The graphics are rendered in both 2D and 3D with a top-down point of view. The overworld map is beautiful and filled with environmental details. The characters and enemies are all in 2D, though. They are represented in skillfully painted portraits or landscape art. The overall aesthetic uses a stylized fantasy theme. All the named heroes are anthropomorphic humanoids, which means they are animal-like beings given human-like qualities. Everything is colorful, and the use of contrast is tasteful. Ability visuals are not stunning but are undoubtedly satisfying, especially after pulling off a magnificent combo.

The sounds in the game are pretty basic. The music is excellent, and it gives off an adventuring vibe. It hypes players up during combat and sets the mood at important game moments. Special effects, for example, the attacks, are meaty and add so much to the bits of immersion possible. The voice acting is minimal but decent, primarily heard through grunts during ability activation or when taking hits.
