Summary

Lil Gator Game is a cozy and wholesome adventure game featuring a young and enthusiastic gator who, with his band of friends, tried to get his beloved now-grown-up older sister to play with him during her fall break. However, with school work in the way, the young gator has no choice but to embark on an epic adventure worthy of a legendary hero to hopefully draw his sister’s attention and get her to finally play with him... like the good old times. Will he succeed?

Plotline

The lil gator in this story has always been close to his older sister. They have role-played as legendary heroes on incredible adventures, but real life came knocking hard. In a blink of the eye, his beloved sister is now in college and he only sees her during her fall breaks. Even during fall breaks she is busy, often with assignments given by lecturers to be submitted by the end of the fall.

This time around, lil gator is determined to get his sister to paly with him like she used to. His method? To recruit his bunch of friends and to turn the entire island into a land of fantasy and adventure; a land that’s filled with thrilling monster encounters and well… adventures to be had… all in hopes of drawing his sister’s attention away from her school work – even just for an hour or two – and to join him in a role-playing adventure, like they used to. Will he be able to do it?

Gameplay

As an adventure game, Lil Gator Game gives you complete freedom to explore the place and to complete quests at your own pace and order. The main quests are mandatory since you’ll need to complete them to push the story forward. There are also plenty of side-quests that you can technically ignore, but completing them do help you earn crafting materials that you use as currency in this game, to buy helpful boost bracelets, for instance, that will make certain actions in the game possible, like scaling a particularly high mountain or tree, or new gear like a paint gun which will unlock a ranged attack option.

I should also point out that once you reach the “Big Island”, the side quests became more crucial to the gameplay since you’ll need to help these side quest givers with whatever they need in order to gain new “friends” whose help you’ll need to develop the playground, turning it from the pretty cool playground that it is into an even cooler, completely fantastical medieval-fantasy town where adventurers can rest, resupply, and regal others with their epic tales.

The crafting materials can also be used to craft a variety of new, mostly cosmetic, items from your inventory… once you’ve discovered the “crafting recipe”, that is. Due to its usefulness, the game does make it easy enough for you to earn a whole lot of them. You can get them as “loot” by slaying the cardboard cutout monsters that are scattered around the island. From time to time, you may even stumble upon ceramic pots and wooden treasure chests that contain even more crafting materials to loot when they are destroyed. As you play, you’ll find trash cans that, funnily enough, can be knocked over to gain some more materials. Well, they do say “Reuse” is better than “Recycle”, don’t they?

Traversing the island – ahem, I mean, the land of fantasy and adventure – is made entertaining as well, thanks to the huge variety of ways you can do so, besides running. The lil gator can, for example, use his shield as a makeshift sled and slide rapidly down slopes, no matter now small. In addition to being an ace in the water, the lil gator is a proficient climber of mountains and trees too, though having the special bracelet does help a lot. You can get more of these bracelets when you manage to find and somehow get to the place where the bracelet seller is located. Usually, some creative workshopping may be required.

With the makeshift glider given to him after a friend quest, the lil gator will be able to glide over tree tops, making it easy to reach far off locations from the top of a tree or mountain... basically, anywhere that’s high enough for gliding to be effective. Eventually, you’ll get to unlock more gear that will grant you more abilities, such as being able to float with a bubble blown from bubble gum.

To spice things up further, there are mini-games to enjoy as well during your adventures. There are these marked areas on the ground – they look like fast-forward buttons – that indicates the start of a racing track. To win though, you can’t just run to the finish line – you’ll need to slide to it using whatever shield you have equipped.

Graphics/ Sound

Lil Gator Game features vibrant, vivid colors, befitting of the childlike enthusiasm that’s pervasive throughout the game. The art style here is simple yet appealing, and it matches well with the game’s cozy theme.

In terms of sound, you’re treated to a range of relaxing and catchy tunes that goes well with the adventuring that’s happening on-screen. The ripping sound of cardboard when you slash and smash your way through them is also surprisingly satisfying; almost as satisfying as popping bubbles on a bubble wrap!

Conclusion

Lil Gator Game is everything a cozy adventure game with a wholesome story should be. Smashing through cardboard cutouts of imaginary enemies, sliding along the race tracks to reach the finish line, and even climbing impressively-tall mountains and trees just to leap off them and glide to a further destination, everything bit of the game is designed to offer casual fun that anyone can enjoy. That’s not even including the plethora of quests, most of which come with fun references to (as well as jabs at) typical RPG tropes, characters to meet, and a playground to transform.

So, for its asking price, Lil Gator Game is definitely one cozy game that you’ll want to play, especially if you are a fan of the genre or know of a particularly creative and imaginative kid in your life who would just love to join Lil Gator in his epic adventure!
