Summary

Blockland is a sandbox 3D game that lets you create your own kind of adventure and world by building it with bricks and blocks. The game has that Minecraft similarity where you can create structures with blocks from different shapes and sizes and your creation can be shared worldwide, you can create a whole new game with it depending on what kind of genre you would prefer. The game can also be played either in single player or multiplayer with your friends.

Gameplay

How Blockland plays is very similar that with Minecraft; you can create your world by building it with blocks. Though in Minecraft, the design is more of a pixel-style look that make the game look a lot different. Here in Blockland, it is more similar that of a Lego in terms of appearance, this is very likely meant to make it more unique that from Minecraft.

However, the gameplay, or perhaps its building mechanics does have inspired from Minecraft but does not copy the entire mechanics, since in Minecraft, some blocks have its different functions and can cause some chemical reactions when placed together. In Blockland, you simply build things to create anything that you desire. Whether it’s a skyscraper or an ancient ruin, there are no limits to what you want to create.

In terms of game mechanics, Blockland is very straightforward, it even has a tutorial stage to teach all of the basics; from basic movements up to the controls in putting up blocks on the field. The controls are in easy reach, but players with a 65 key keyboard or keyboards without numpads on the right side may have difficulty accessing the buttons, as some of the block building functions are mapped on the numerical keys in the numpad. Good thing the function are fully customizable to let down map the keys to your liking.

Aside from the free building feature, players can participate in the different game modes available in Blockland. Some of them are unique that it is almost feels like a different game, there is one that lets you race in a single track by yourself or against other players, and what makes it more interesting is that you can customize your racing kart with different designs and colors. There is another game mode where you get to explore a mansion and find the treasure chests hidden inside, the design of the mansion was well thought as it features a ton of interiors from kitchen to bedroom and the living room, and the design was impressive as it was created for hundreds of hours. Then one game lets you play as a ninja and try to climb the mountain with the use of the obstacles. Then if you just want a plain old smash everything game, there is this game mode that lets you play as a normal brick character and smash to any building, smash them enough and you will grow bigger, and finally there is a Christmas themed level where you play as a bad guy; you steal presents from Santa Claus around town and throw it to the flaming pit, it is naughty indeed but definitely a fun way to ruin Christmas.

There are a lot of possible game modes in Blockland, and even if you just tried the demo version of the game, as you can create your own game mode. Creating one is similar that with building your own world, but with some addition on putting parameters on certain blocks. After completing your game level, you can also share it with other players who have internet access where they can also play it or even share their own creations too. And downloading the game level is quite fast and easy.

Character creation is quite simple but has a wider range of possible items to use, it lets you pick gender and change its facial appearance, and not to mention changing its color. You can also change the shirt design and its arms, and also the legs and other possible accessories. And if you want to save the design, you can save it as a preset so you don’t need to restart all over if you want to creation another same character.

Community

Though Blockland may not be that popular, there are some players that are active and building their small community. In which these players participate with other players as well. And thanks to the multiplayer feature in the game, players can hop in to any open game levels and participate in any activities being done there, or leave the game and look for another level. And they can share their creations with other players for more interaction and limitless game time.

Graphics/ Sound

Though the game is a full 3D game, the visuals are very basic. It has less shade and detail as it may reminder you of those early 2000 games before. With this kind of graphics, this also means that it can run into any low-spec computers and laptops. As for the sound feature, it lacks any background music, though it has a short jingle at the start of the level. Sound effects was also minimal, as some were sort of borrowed from other games, including the coin effect and brick breaking noise from Super Mario Bros.

Conclusion

Though Blockland may have borrowed some aspects of Minecraft, it can still be an entertaining game if you prefer a different style in sandbox games. Though there are some shortcomings in the game such as the sound effects and very basic visuals, this can be playable in low budget or older PCs and laptops so meaning anyone can try this game out. Although Blockland is a buy-to-play game, you can try the demo out for free.
