Gameplay

One of the amazing things about Titans of Time is that, despite being 3D and all, the game can be played entirely from your browser. You simply need to register for an account and you can begin by creating your character – it’s that easy!

Character creation in this game is pretty straightforward. Aside from having 2 genders to choose from, you’ll get to pick a character class out of the 4 available. The 4 classes include the Titan (a.k.a. the armored warrior class); the Assassin (strong melee DPS); the Philosopher (strong ranged DPS with the powers of Intellect at his/her command) and the sole support class, the Priest, who is also the only class with both healing and damage-dealing spells.

Different classes will have different sets of skills and hence, the gameplay as well as the play style required will definitely feel different. Due to this, you might be interested to try them all just to find the most suitable class. If that’s the case, well... you’ll be glad to know that you can create more than a character in this game. So, if you’d like to try another class, do go ahead and try away!

Once you’re done, you will immediately be dropped onto what I’d like to call the “Beginner’s Island” to test out your character and learn the controls. There are a few quests here too for you to complete so you would have enough cash to buy your very first battleship and travel to the main city in the game.

Sailing your own ship is quite a nice aspect in this game although the whole experience isn’t very realistic, for example, you can move your ships sideways. However, your battleship is not merely a vessel for travelling from location to location. Instead, your ship is also outfitted with cannons that you can then use to attack other players’ ships if you so wish to. To land, you simply need to find any place with a dock.

Questing is the bread and butter of any MMORPG and in this game, it is no different. The main way to level up in Titans of Time is by questing. The quests usually include kill and gathering quests, which is pretty common among MMOs, but some quests can be pretty grindy... which is a pretty prominent feature in old-school-styled games. Killing 20 of the same mobs can get rather tedious after some time, more so when you need to kill 20 times of 3 different mobs.

This is especially true when you take into account the game’s combat system. However, before we get into that, maybe we should discuss about the movement in this game. Moving your character in Titans of Time can be quite dizzying because the animation of your moving character doesn’t match the actual speed your character is moving at. This desynchronization can be disconcerting, and perhaps slightly nauseous for players with weaker stomachs.

This rather speedy movement speed is perfectly suited for kiting a mob, except that the mob can move at an equally fast speed. Maybe it’s a frame rate issue, but there are times when the mob was so far behind and it could still hit my character. Oh, and bear in mind that aggro in this game is rather permanent. You can’t shake off a mob by running away. It will chase after you to the end of the world if you somehow managed to get there! Even exiting an instance and reentering it won’t discourage the super-determined mobs – only your death will satisfy them.

Deaths can be quite annoying since you are given 2 choices – either to resurrect immediately at the nearest safe point and you have no idea where that may be, or to wait 5 minutes to resurrect on the spot you died. I’d hazard a guess that most players would choose the former choice.

Aside from movements, combat in Titans of Time is pretty tricky and awkward-looking to say the least. You don’t really need to face your enemy to attack it. Tab-targeting works too, so you can press Tab to select the next closest mob to attack. When it comes to small groups of enemies, you’ll need to be clever when pulling to avoid needing to take on all of them at once. If that unfortunately happened, it will likely result in a gruesome death.

Thankfully, you can restore health and mana/rage by simply going out of combat in this game. Thus, it’s pretty common to have to wait for at least a couple of seconds in between mobs before engaging the enemy once again. There are potions that you can use to top up your health or mana/rage, but you should really save these up for emergencies, such as when battling a tough boss. You can also invest your energy and faith points into training stats that will help you survive through tougher battles, such as Stamina (for more health and health regeneration), Agility (for higher dodge) and either Strength or Intellect (for more damage). There are even talents that you can invest your talent points in to improve your character, making him/her stronger.

That said, it’s nice to note that you can accept and complete multiple quests at the same time though, and that there’s a nifty quest log which helps you track the progress of the quests you are on. The game only allows you to track up to 5 quests at a time. Aside from this form of tracking, you won’t be given any other aid for questing. So, this means there are no auto-pathfinding, free teleports to quest givers nor any forms of hints highlighting quest location or quest NPCs. Due to this, you are actually required to generally remember where you’ve gotten a quest if not, you may not be able to turn the quest in.

When it comes to questing and remembering quest-related locations or quest givers, the map in Titans of Time falls short. The map does show a picture of the region you’re in but there are no annotations, such as your current position on the map or the positions of quest givers, making the map pretty much useless for questing. In fact, the minimap is more useful in the sense that it shows and differentiates all the important NPCs who are within your vicinity. Personally, I’d advise you to simply forgo using the map altogether and instead, use the zoom out feature (zoom it as far out as you can) on your minimap.

Being an MMORPG, Titans of Time also offers professions for you to learn and advance. You are allowed to learn up to 4 professions and coincidentally, the game provides exactly 4 professions, namely Herbalism, Alchemy, Cooking and Fishing, for you to learn for free. Once you have a profession learned, you can then start gathering various materials such as herbs, meat, fishes and more. There is no need to find a trainer to upgrade your profession or learn new crafting recipes either. Everything can be conveniently learned from the profession interface. However, you may need to visit the vendors in the city to buy some necessary crafting materials.

Unlike most games, the loot that you earned from mobs in this game mainly consists of crafting materials or quest items. You won’t get new equipment for your character that way. Instead, you need to buy them from the respective armor, weapons and trinket vendors in the city using in-game cash. These items will also get damaged over time with use and with every death you suffer. Repairing your equipment requires money too.

There are many ways for you to earn more cash since some of these items can be pretty expensive. Questing is 1 main way to earn more money, but you can also sell off crafted items or crafting materials at the Auction House; search for and open bonus chests that are usually placed in instances; and store your gold at the Vault and earn a 4% interest on your savings per day. Saving your cash in the Vault is also good for you since what you carry on you can be looted by another player if he/she managed to kill you in the game.

World PvP is very much encouraged in Titans of Time since players with their PvP status on will gain a pretty substantial 25% bonus experience points on all kills. Due to this, Titans of Time can in fact be considered as a rather hardcore MMO. If you’re more of a PvE player, then you’d be happy to know that you can enjoy challenging instances after you’ve found them on the map. One such dungeons is the Gauntlet on the desert map whereby you’ll need to defeat all the enemies the dungeon throws your way with hardly any time in between waves to recover your health. You can play the Gauntlet in 3 difficulty levels.

If you have enjoyed the game and would like to stay for the long term, you may want to consider upgrading your account to become an Exalted Player. You’ll gain a ton of perks, such as 150% more player experience, faster energy and faith regeneration, and double vault interest. You’ll also be showing the devs some support and much needed love too!

Community

The community in Titans of Time is admittedly small and hence, the locations in the game, especially the city, seem quite barren. This is why if you’ve enjoyed playing the game, you should recommend it to your friends and get them to play the game with you.

Graphics/ Sound

For the most part, the 3D graphics in Titans of Time seem dated enough to offer players that authentic old-school look. However, the game does sometimes reuse their NPC models by placing them in different locations. There are also some graphical glitches in the Fort whereby the camera following your character can somehow move across walls, allowing you to peak into neighboring corridors or even the sky where the instance is somehow suspended in.

On the other hand, the music and the sound effects in the game are pretty good. The music also changes depending on the location you’re in.

Conclusion

Titan of Time is a pretty promising old-school 3D MMORPG, but at its current stage, it seems that the game still has a long way to go. Players who are interested to give this game a try should bear in mind that the game is still in beta testing and that it is being developed by indie developers. It will need all the helpful feedback that you can give to improve. With time and lots of improvements, it is possible that Titans of Time may one day rival excellent browser MMOs like Runescape.
