Summary
Pocket Bravery is a retro-style, indie 2D fighting game that comes with plenty of game modes and fighters, lots to unlock as you play, a robust multiplayer mode for you to test your mettle online against players from around the globe, and a fighting gameplay featuring some epic combos and special moves.
Gameplay
As with most fighting games, Pocket Bravery comes with a pretty solid roster of fighters. It may not be the biggest there is, but it’s definitely well-varied and fleshed out for an indie title, covering all the typical archetypes you’d expect of a fighting game. Due to this, fans of the genre can find a fighter that is familiar enough to their usual “main”.
Each fighter comes with a more detailed info panel that you can refer to as well. Here, the type of character, such as grappler or speed, is clearly indicated, along with their respective Power, Speed, Range and Difficulty stats, and typical combos you can do. It’s also good to note that the kind of characters you get here is quite diverse, culturally speaking, and covers fighters from countries that typically aren’t featured as much in most mainstream fighting games.
Considering how different the characters can be, you might want to get your feet wet, so to speak, with the characters before heading into a fight. The game comes with a nifty combo Trials mode under the Extra Mode option, where you can learn increasingly complicated combos for each character in the game and how to properly chain them all up without dropping a move in between, such as having a fighter from India, Scotland (of all places!), and Africa.
The game has a plethora of game modes too, ranging from the usual Arcade mode to even a story mode where you get to follow the story of Nuno, the game’s protagonist, as he takes on the evil Hector. Aside from its local and online multiplayer mode, which we’ll cover in the next section, there is a Survival and a Time Attack mode if you’re into those two game modes as well.
In terms of the gameplay, Pocket Bravery is a four-button fighting game, namely light and heavy punches as well as left and right kicks. Naturally, the way you mix and chain them up will result in unique combos and special moves.
Every hit you manage to land will also charge up a meter at the bottom of the screen. When full, you can then activate your character’s super move, usually to pretty devastating effect. You can even enhance your character’s move by triggering the 2-bar EX gauge. Different characters will, of course, have different moves and it’s up to you to figure out which combos work best for the character you’re playing. Button mashing here just wouldn’t do!
Every fight will reward you with a currency called BP. You can spend these BP at the shop to unlock new stages, extra colors for your characters and other customization options, and even rarities that, naturally, cost a whole lot of BP, including a whole new character called Jorge. For collectors, Pocket Bravery has a Gallery section where you can unlock and collect a variety of art, sounds, videos, and even messages as you progress.
For its price tag, Pocket Bravery is an indie fighting game that has a surprisingly huge amount of content, whether it is characters or colors you can purchase by winning fights or its multiplayer mode which offers almost unlimited entertainment as you try to climb the ranks. This game is definitely worth every buck if you’re a fan of the genre!
Community
As with most fighting games, Pocket Bravery comes with a local Versus mode as well as an online multiplayer mode, with both casual and ranked matchmaking, where you can fight against players from all around the world. The best thing about its multiplayer, however, is that the game uses rollback net code, which helps balance out any possible latency-related issues in a multiplayer fight. You can also invite a friend to a fight as well if he/she owns a copy of the game.
Graphics/ Sound
Pocket Bravery features fantastic Neo Geo Pocket-style pixel graphics that give the game, and its characters that adorable, retro look. For a fighting game, the animations are all very well done, with smooth moves and transitions. The same goes for its flashy effects and cool special moves. The game has plenty of cutscenes too, especially in its story mode, where the cutscenes tell the story.
In terms of sound, the game offers a selection of rock music that matches well with the game’s more action-oriented gameplay. The sound effects are awesome here, giving you a clear indication of when a hit landed and when it didn’t.
Conclusion
Without a doubt, Pocket Bravery is a true indie gem to behold, developed by a team that clearly loves and is deeply knowledgeable about the genre! Not only does it successfully bring back the thrill and nostalgia of classic fighting games from the 90s, but the game comes with a host of features, ranging from a diverse roster of fighters to its elemental energy-based combat system to even its low-latency online multiplayer fights. If you’re a fan of 2D fighting games, Pocket Bravery is one title you don’t want to miss!
