Plotline

Cthulhu and its monstrous minions have been wreaking havoc on various towns in feudal Japan and the hero samurai, Musashi, has awakened to answer the desperate pleas of his people. Like moths to a flame, Cthulhu’s minions are drawn to Musashi’s formidable prowess as a samurai warrior, each one of them eager to bring him to his knees.

Battle stance ready, it is now up to you to help Musashi slay as many monsters as he can before he is eventually overwhelmed.

Gameplay

Musashi vs Cthulhu is pretty much a straightforward 2D action game where you fight with a pair of samurai swords instead of your fists. The game comes with an optional tutorial in which you’ll be introduced to the game’s simple controls scheme.

There are no movement controls in this game since Musashi doesn’t move unless it’s part of the combat animated. All you need to learn is the key combinations (just the 4 arrow keys) needed to attack a certain direction. This is important because you can only hit an enemy if you hit their weak spots, shown in the game as red, pulsing pustules, or you’ll miss and end up opening yourself up for counterattacks.

Even if you don’t remember which keys to hit, the game will show you (the correct key combinations will be shown as tiny icons) whenever an enemy is close enough for you to take a stab. The controls here is honestly very easy to grasp even if you have absolutely no experience playing fighting games or action games like Musashi vs Cthulhu. This little fact makes the game so much more accessible to players of all skill levels and age brackets.

As you play, the game ramps up the challenge by introducing new enemies, some of which may require multiple hits before being “slain” as well as enemies with special abilities like being able to “teleport” from the left side to the right, and vice versa. There are also times when multiple enemies rush you and you’ll need to then rely on the game’s action queueing system to queue up your actions and slay those monsters before they slay you! However, I’d like to point out that there’s no way for you to cancel a queued action, so be sure not to spam the keys on your keyboard.

Your focus wavered just for a bit; just enough for one of Cthulhu’s minions to strike a blow. What now? Well, you’ll have 3 lives per playthrough with no way to earn more. So, at least it’s not an instant game over if you do get hit. Not to mention, Musashi will activate a pushback effect whenever his lives dropped by one, allowing you a temporary respite from the monster horde and regain your bearings.

It's also great that the game has something for you to strive for besides simply getting the highest score possible. There are several leaderboards where your best high score will be displayed alongside other players from all around the world. The leaderboards are separated into daily, weekly, monthly and all-time, and if you want, you can only compare scores between your Steam friends.

So, overall, in terms of gameplay, Musashi vs Cthulhu basically did everything right! The combat animations are all very well-done and the controls are buttery smooth and super responsive. The only time your actions may feel unresponsive is when you’re actually queueing an action rather than carrying out said action in real-time. The leaderboard is also a nice touch, giving the game some form of replayability especially for players who are extremely competitive.

That being said, it'd be nice if the game has a bit more content, such as other game modes or challenge modes, to spice up the gameplay a little.

Community

In some way, Musashi vs Cthulhu is a competitive game. You can try your best to get the highest score possible and compare your best high score with others worldwide. Of course, if you want, you can even choose to only compare your scores with your friends.

Graphics/ Sound

The oriental-style comic book art used in this game fits perfectly with the game’s theme. The upbeat battle music used here is also very well-suited to the gameplay, giving you a nice boost in adrenaline and helping you to focus on getting the keys right.

Conclusion

All in all, Musashi vs Cthulhu may be a simple game, but it’s a very well-made indeed! Everything, from the smoothness of the controls to the beautiful art, and even to the challenge level, is spot-on here, allowing players to test their hand-and-eye coordination skills while competing with others around the world via the game’s many leaderboards. Musashi vs Cthulhu is a really cheap game too, considering how many hours you may end up putting into the game.
