Iron Sky is a brand-new MMO strategy game that puts a pretty cool sci-fi twist to World War II by setting the game on an alien planet called Atlantis. In this game, you’ll get to play as either the Azure Alliance (the Allies) or the Imperial Empire (the Soviet Union) in the war that had broken out on the planet. Build bases to expand your influence, amass a cybernetic army with amazing advanced tech, and defeat all the enemies who stand in your way to victory!

The storyline in this game is admittedly confusing, but I’ll do my best to explain the backstory.

So, in 1939, during World War II, a mysterious portal popped up in Poland. The greatest minds of the world worked on trying to activate it and after a long while, they managed to make it work. The Soviet Union and Germany both had control of Poland back then and hence, they were the first to lead their armies through the portal and discovered the planet of Atlantis.

It completely escapes me how their people manage to survive on a planet that looks quite barren and possibly have no atmosphere… but anyway, that’s not part of the story.

The Soviet Union and Germany eventually set up their first space colony there. However, the Allies followed suit quite sometime later when technology has already advanced to a pretty high level and set up their own base there. Needless to say, the animosity between the two factions is still alive and raging and as such, World War II was reignited on the planet.

Although the game keeps reminding us that the game is set on an alien planet, the various locations on the world map show otherwise. It’s just weird that an alien planet has regions that are named after actual countries on Earth.

To begin your campaign of conquest, you will need to choose between one of two factions, namely the Azure Alliance and Imperial Empire. If you don’t really mind which side you fight for, then it might be best if you choose the one with the faction reward. Having some free gems is always a good thing. You will also get to choose an avatar out of the 4 available.

The gameplay in Iron Sky is pretty much the same as in most MMO strategy games you play on your browser. You’ll need to construct various buildings and keep them upgraded. All of this consumes resources (usually metal and crystals) so you’ll need to set up and develop your resource-producing buildings first of all.

Interestingly, the game allows you to speed up processes that have a duration of 1 minute or less for free. If not, you’ll then need to spend gems to do so. Considering that you only have 1 building slot and that you have no way to buy additional slots (permanently or otherwise), you might want to plan your upgrades so you can maximize the development of your base. Perhaps you can get extra building slots if you topped up (a.k.a. spend real money) though…

Another interesting point about the base development process is the fact the level of your buildings can exceed the level of your Control Room. However, this doesn’t mean that you can have a level 1 Control Room and a level 20 Military Factory. The game regulates your progress by adding in an energy meter. Upgrades will consume more energy and the only way to increase your energy level to accommodate more upgrades is by upgrading your Control Room. Ingenious, isn’t it?

As you progress, you will eventually get to set up colonies in other regions around the planet. This is a great way for you to gather more resources. However, these bases cannot be defended by traditional means and instead are defended by turrets which you can build at the Defense Center, a special building that only colonies have. Unless you’re a Monthly Cardholder (VIP), you will have to collect your extra resources manually.

Aside from developing your base, you will need to build an army as well, and you can do that and more via the Military Factory. Here, you not only can recruit troops but also “develop” new Empire units. However, to unlock a new Empire unit, you’ll need to upgrade your military factory first.

There are also Atlantis units which I assume are special units because you actually need to collect shards before you can unlock them. Shards can be obtained from the PvE mode called Trials. Once you unlocked the Strategy Room, you will also gain access to a pretty large upgrade tree. Each branch of the tree can be unlocked using strategy cards and these cards can be earned by diving into another PvE mode called Renegades.

That being said, the range of units you can recruit is very impressive in this game. They include units like mechs, tanks, jet fighters, and even a UFO called an X-UFO. Each unit can be further upgraded through a variety of ways, be it by leveling up or by upgrading the weapons on the unit. Upgrades cost special materials too – materials that can be refined from metals and crystals at the Element Refinery.

To send your units into battle, you’ll need to deploy them in your formation first. There are a whopping 12 slots available in your formation, but naturally, you won’t have access to all of them at once. You will need to level up to unlock more slots. Note that the units you deploy also have a “formation preference”, which basically means the recommended positions you should place your units. It’s best to follow the advice given… after all, it would be foolish to place a fragile unit on the frontlines to take the brunt of the damage.

Combat is automated in Iron Sky, so your Combat Power (CP) and a dash of luck are possibly the only two things that will determine whether you win or lose a fight. It’s weird that the game doesn’t let you view your CP via your profile. Instead, you need to head over to the Arena to find out what your CP is. However, do take note that the game has a paper-scissors-stone thing going on, so, you might be able to capitalize on that system to maximize your damage and reducing your casualties.

Talking about casualties, your units will need repairs after a battle. You can do so by either bringing your entire fleet back to your base or by using this thing called a Teleporter to bring the unit back for repairs and send it back into the field. Teleporters can be crafted at the Military Factory, but you do get a lot of them for free as you complete the earlier missions. All of these are covered in the game’s compulsory tutorial so don’t worry!

Iron Sky has several PvE and PvP game modes for you to enjoy. For PvE, there are Renegades and Trials, as mentioned earlier, but you will also get to fight various enemies via the world map. There are tons of territories for you to head to and you can even set up sub-bases in certain locations. These special locations allow PvP so if you like, you can scan the area for suitable enemies to fight, choose one that you want to engage, and dive straight into battle. At a certain level, you will unlock the Arena as well. Here, you can fight other players to obtain exp for your Advisor. By the way, Advisors passively provide your army with extra stats and hence, boost your overall CP.

Fancy giving yourself a nice edge in this game? Well, the game provides tons of attractive rewards to encourage you to top-up. In fact, if you do plan on topping up, you might want to consider putting in $20 just so you can get a Monthly Card. You will not only get a ton of freebies daily for 30 days, you will also gain some nice Monthly Card Privileges.

As the game is still in closed beta, the game might hang at times – only happened once to me. If this happens, a completely unrelated error will pop up but you can just ignore it. Simply refresh the page and you should be good to go.

Iron Sky is currently in Closed Beta and as such, not many people know they could hop into the game now and try it out. Having said that, the game does provide tons of AI to make up for the lack of players, so you don’t need to worry about not having enough players to battle with at the Arena.

It’s odd though that the game doesn’t have a guild system at the moment. Perhaps this is a feature that will be implemented later.

Graphics/ Sound

The graphics in Iron Sky aren’t exactly high-quality per se, especially if you zoomed in, but I really like the cool unit and building designs. The graphic designers for this game really tried hard to bring out the sci-fi feel of the game’s theme. The sound effects are good as well, but I find that the voice over sounds a lot like the lady in Red Alert games.

Iron Sky doesn’t really bring anything new to the MMO strategy genre, but it’s a pretty solid sci-fi-themed MMO game that you can play for free directly on your browser. Despite its somewhat confusing story, the game does have a fun gameplay, cool graphics, and awesome effects. If you enjoy playing online strategy games, you might want to give this game a go.
