Summary

Game of Thrones is an MMO strategy game where players will not only get to play as a Lord and test their mettle in the conflict-ridden world of the popular TV and book series but also battle in iconic locations all around the map, ranging from King’s Landing to Winterfell. Recruit your favorite characters in the story and join forces with other like-minded players in an attempt to conquer Westeros and claim the Iron Throne!

Plotline

Despite being part of the Game of Throne franchise, this game is surprisingly bland when it comes to its storytelling.

In this game, you play as a lesser Lord of the Kingdom, and you’re in the midst of preparing your people for the coming winter before disaster struck and you found yourself surrounded by rebels on all sides. The game supposedly has a story-driven campaign but there isn’t seem to be any “story” in that campaign – just battles after battles.

So, if you’re looking for an epic, story-driven MMORTS, this isn’t the game for you, but if you simply want to crush your enemies in a well-made strategy game with the Game of Thrones theme, then this is right up your alley!

Gameplay

Game of Thrones does feel a lot like every other browser MMORTS out there, albeit with a really cool and popular theme, and superior graphics. In this game, you, as the Lord of your land, will need to develop and build your empire, assemble an army that will make your enemies tremble in fear of your might, and work with others to capture possibly all nine provinces in Westeros.

The empire-building aspect of the game is pretty similar to many other MMORTS games. You’ll need to build resource-producing facilities to passively generate resources like stone, metal, food and wood, and you’ll then use those resources to upgrade your city’s many buildings, be it the barracks or the farm. There are plots of land outside your castle walls that are occupied by rebels as well. You’ll want to clear them away as soon as you can just so you can unlock more spots to build crucial buildings.

In addition to building upgrades, you can also invest resources into advancing the many technology trees available for research via the Maester’s Tower. After all, you’ll want to get as much of an advantage as you can before heading out and facing roaming bands of marauders or rival armies in the war-torn land.

The Kingdom map, where you’ll be doing most of your open world fighting, is filled with plenty of locations for you to attack or capture. There are challenging boss-level like Rebel Camps that will require more than 1 army – bring your friends and their armies – to defeat, but there are also easier targets such as resource-rich locations where you can send your army to gather some extra resources.

On this map, you can also visit and possibly capture (you’ll definitely need some help here) iconic “capitals” of many provinces and regions in the Game of Thrones series, such as Casterly Rock where the Lannisters rule over and Winterfell, the home of the Starks.

Being an MMORTS, Game of Thrones is a very battle-oriented game – there’s no guile needed here! Fights usually consist of two stages – the formation stage, which can be skipped if you plan on using the same formation as before, and the actual combat phase.

The formation of your units is fairly important in this game since different commanders will lead different types of units. So, as a general rule, you don’t want to put a battalion of archers at the frontlines – put your sturdier soldiers like pikemen or light infantry instead. That said, you’ll only get to manually arrange your team’s formation when the option to do so is made available to you. Not every game mode allows you to do so.

Combat, on the other hand, is pretty much automated in this game, and if it’s not, there should be an option for you to turn “auto-combat” on by clicking on the icon on the right side of the screen.

In some way, combat does feel slightly different depending on which game mode you’re playing. For instance, the dungeon-like and supposedly story-driven Weirwood mode, allows you to use your commanders’ skills manually if you like, while there’s no option to do so in battles against rebels or against roaming enemies on the Kingdom map.

Now, since battles are vital in this game, you’ll want to make sure your troops and specifically your commanders, are in their strongest possible form. These commanders can be leveled up either by gaining experience in battle or by consuming special EXP items. They can also be equipped with powerful gear, promoted, and have their skills upgraded. Oh, and as a bonus, many of these commanders are characters that you’d easily recognize from the Game of Thrones franchise.

Personally, from my playthrough, Game of Thrones doesn’t feel like it’s a pay-to-win game, unlike many other browser-based games out there. Even its tiered VIP system is made somewhat accessible to the free-to-play players, allowing them to earn a few VIP points per day simply by logging in. Naturally, the higher you go, the more or better perks you’ll unlock. But of course, you can still rise up the VIP tiers a lot quicker if you spend money.

Community

As required by any MMORTS, Game of Thrones provides players with a way to group up and tackle a goal together, and it’s called Alliances. Due to the many perks you’ll get simply by in an Alliance, it’s best to join up the first instance you’re able to. Aside from having access to new PvP game modes like alliance wars, you’ll also be able to shop at the alliance shop where you can spend the contribution points earned by helping out others to speed up their construction processes. You can also ask your fellow allies for help speeding up your own “wait times” as well!

Graphics/ Sound

The graphics and sound in this game are absolutely fantastic. The quality is definitely beyond the roof for a browser game! I particularly like how amazing the 3D models for each of the iconic characters of the TV show, and also each of the iconic locations in Westeros, look in this game. I’m sure you’ll be completely blown away as well!

Conclusion

All in all, Game of Thrones is an impressive browser-based MMORTS game with a widely popular theme. The gameplay is incredibly fun, even for players who are interested in some casual play, and the art here is simply astounding. The only thing they can and should improve on is the storyline.

So, if you love GoT and would like to play a game that brings out the essence of the franchise, Game of Thrones is a really decent option. Dive into the constantly-warring provinces of Westeros and make your mark today!
