Gameplay

You’re just inherited a farm land with a small farm house on it… congrats! Now, all you have to do is to develop it into the farm that you have always envisioned it to be!

Being a farming game, the first thing you should know about the game is how to plant crops. In most farming games, it is very straightforward, but in Free Farm Game, plating crops may be slightly more complicated due to the many factors that you’ll have to take into account before you start! Firstly, you’ll have to till the empty plots of land that you will want to convert into productive farmlands. Then, you’ll need to seed the land with –what else?- seeds! There are 456 different crops that you can seed, but if you’d notice, there’s a description for each of the crops stating whether is it perfect, good or bad to grow this type of crop during the season and weather that your farm is experiencing. It is, of course, more efficient to plant crops that have the ‘perfect’ label on them, but don’t forget that weather can change… sometimes rather drastically and a favorable condition for, for instance, planting rye, may become unfavorable while the crop is growing and thus, reducing its yield.

Furthermore, you mustn’t forget to water the crops at every turn, especially during the dry season where there is no rain, as well! Crops with zero humidity for a whole turn will suffer loss in terms of yield. You can also spray pesticides to increase pest resistance for your crops, but these pesticides will affect the quality of soil and crops… unless, of course, you use organic pesticides. Since soil fertility will diminish every turn when you’re growing crop on the land and that crops will not grow properly or may not grow at all on unfertile soil, you will have to spray fertilizers to top up on soil fertility as well! Similarly to pesticides, some fertilizers are pollutants and will affect the quality of your crops. Therefore, it is best to use organic fertilizers instead!

Free Farm Game also offers up to 50 different types of livestock that you can rear and breed at your farm! To purchase your first animals, you’ll need to set up a coop or a barn first. Then, place whichever animals that you like (and can afford). Choose a type of feed for them and start nourishing them with food and water. After being well-fed and watered, you can collect the eggs or milk produced, or you can cull them to get meat. You can also fish for fishes at the stream or head to the forest nearby to gather mushrooms, herbs, wood and hay too!

The animals in this game are separated by their gender, males or females, and are also purchased separately. To breed your livestock, you’ll need both genders, of course, as well as a good time period, namely during Autumn and Winter. If the breeding process went well, the female animal will start gestating and a baby animal will be born after a few turns. With even more turns, it will slowly grow into adulthood. However, if the breeding is unsuccessful, you’ll need to wait another turn before you can try again. There is also an option for selective breeding, whereby you can get the parent animals to pass on their qualities to the next generation. This is a great way for you to control the breeding of your livestock to ensure quality offsprings.

Don’t forget to medicate your animals as well since they can get sick easily or infected by parasites if the coop or barn is too dirty. Sick animals will die if you do not heal them in time, whereas parasites will diminish the livestock quality with every turn. Sickness or parasites in Free Farm Game must be treated with the right cure. Tougher and more resilient sickness/parasite can only be cured with stronger medicine, while weaker sickness/parasite can be cured with merely some mild drugs. Vaccination also helps to temporarily protect your animals against sickness and parasites. However, medication, despite its benefits, will decrease the quality of your livestock on the turn in which you medicate them. For subsequent turns though, the livestock quality will return to normal.

With all these produce collected and harvested, you’ll need a place to store them. Thus, you’ll need to build a storage silo on your farm! Besides that, there are also other types of buildings, which can be collectively called as crafting buildings, that you can build on your farm. These buildings will allow you to create items/goods from the raw produce you’ve gathered. For example, the windmill will help you to make wheat flour from wheat if there is enough wind to power your windmill. You can even upgrade your buildings so that they will be more efficient. If you ran out of land to build your buildings, you can purchase new land with in-game money too!

As you can see, in Free Farm Game, you, as the farmer, will have to do a lot of chores just to keep your farm going! Every action that you take in the game will consume a part of your farmer’s endurance. You will start off with 1000 endurance points for each turn and once it is depleted, you’ll have to wait for the turn to end to replenish it. The time for the next turn to happen is indicated on top of the page, which is around 22 hours. There is a catch though – if your farmer’s comfort level drops due to lack of firewood (which can be gathered in the forest), your farmer will not fully regain his endurance during a new turn.

There is also a quicker way to regain some endurance - you can eat food produced at your farm or purchased them from other players as well! Trading may be an easier way to go, but do note that you are given limited transaction points for every turn. Each time you buy, sell or place an item on the exchange board, you will use up these points.

The graphics are pretty acceptable for a browser-based farming game. The environment in the game looks nice enough. However, there’s a huge problem with the profile picture in this game. Unlike other farming games, Free Farm Game uses snippets of real people’s facial features, such as hairstyles, eyes, nose, mouth and ears, and then it allows you to piece them together to make your profile picture. As you can expect, your profile picture will turn out looking like a Frankenstein monster or at least a very bad job of photoshopping… most of the time. On the other hand, the background sound in this game consists primarily of the sound of water trickling. There are also some sound effects to congratulate you whenever you’ve completed a quest and that’s about it.

In conclusion, Free Farm Game is a very slow-paced (around 22 hours per turn) and turn-based farming game that is as realistic as a virtual game can be. The game is also extremely intricate and it covers practically every aspect of actual farming, from the weather conditions to the medication and vaccination of your farm animals.
