Summary
Puzzle games have evolved to a point where they’re not easily discernable from other genres, like first-person adventure games. Playing them will tickle and squeeze every ounce of brainpower you have, treating you to rather challenging puzzles and mysteries that will scratch your problem-solving itch. Although most adventure games integrate demanding puzzles into the mix, those that purely provide these are far and few in between
One of these games is Faraday Protocol, a puzzle-adventure title by Deck13. Now available on the Switch, it’s one of the more challenging titles among its peers. It’s a purely first-person experience where you’ll get to explore and investigate a baffling alien world to solve its mysteries for your company.
All things considered, is Faraday Protocol a journey worth undertaking? Should you head over to planet Cunor and attempt to solve its mysteries? Before you make a choice, let’s check out what it has to offer:
Plotline
In Faraday Protocol, you’ll get to play as Raug Zeekon, an interstellar archaeologist tasked with investigating the source of a signal emanating from an unexplored star. Right after you awaken, you’ll immediately encounter a robotic AI voice called IRIS, who is tasked to protect the ancient structures. Without diving deep into spoilers, the game doesn’t have a story that will tug heartstrings, but rather, it is one that will keep you engaged and invested, especially when you dive deeper into the lore and unravel Cunor’s mysteries.
Gameplay
Faraday Protocol is a first-person puzzle game. You’ll move around a 3D space, wandering around puzzle rooms, lengthy corridors, and open spaces. Although there’s no separate tutorial, the game will hand out drops of its gameplay mechanics, easing you into its more complex mechanics the deeper you go. After the first few minutes where you absolutely will have no idea where to go, it manages to direct you seamlessly into your next objectives and places you need to go, despite the lack of markers and minimaps. Occasions where you wander around painstakingly searching where to proceed are minimal, making it easy for you to jump from one puzzle to the next.
Faraday Protocol has numerous puzzle types, ranging from switches wherein you have to press similarly colored buttons to using the gun-like bia tool, which absorbs lights. The game does a fantastic job making progression and difficulty gradual. At first, you’ll be handed easy-to-solve puzzles to introduce you to its gameplay mechanics, and then, it gets more complex once you’ve mastered them. With that said, the problems are a tad hard to solve, requiring you to dive deep into the clues and objectives presented. Nevertheless, you’ll never experience mental block moments due to the puzzles being pretty solvable.
The gun-like bia tool is pretty much one of Faraday Protocol’s best aspects. By absorbing lights from certain statues, you can then fire it off to beacons connected with wire-like objects that you can use to open doors and power up objects in the environment. Most of the puzzles are color-coded, although symbol types will be introduced later on. In addition, also note that puzzles are never linear or straightforward since you’ll find yourself moving back to different rooms, again and again, to take lights via your bia gun or to press a switch.
Community
Faraday Protocol is a single-player game, so you can’t cooperate with your friends to solve OPIS’ many mysteries. However, if you’d like to interact with fellow fans and players, you can head over to their official Discord and interact with their social media team on Twitter.
Graphics/Sound
In terms of presentation, Faraday Protocol is nothing short of wondrous. The Switch version has noticeable downgrades, but nevertheless, it’s one of the best-looking titles on the hybrid console. The feeling of wonder the moment you step into the outdoors on the first part of the game is a fantastic feeling, thanks to the beautiful art design and lighting.
Meanwhile, we can also say the same about the interiors and puzzles; you’ll be treated to sleek-looking rooms and vibrant lights. Moreover, the game runs fairly well on a Switch. Even when I was in rooms with multi-colored lights and flashing on-screen elements, there were no framerate drops or stability issues. Finally, the sound design is pretty great, dishing out a sci-fi vibe, especially when you activate particular objects. Voice acting is minimal, but IRIS’ performance, in particular, manages to impress.
Conclusion
Overall, Faraday Protocol is a must-have for anyone who is into puzzles. It’s a challenging title that will undoubtedly squeeze every ounce of brainpower you have, yet it manages to find the thin balance between intuitive gameplay and puzzle complexity. Moreover, it doesn’t lack variety, giving you unique puzzles you’ll find joy in solving.
So, give Faraday Protocol a shot and start unraveling its many mysteries!
