Summary
You’re part of a scientific expedition, and everything seems to be going well. However, as you cross a nearby desert planet, you suddenly hear a distress signal calling for help. Since you and your crew are both curious and altruistic, you decide to help. However, things don’t end up being in your favor since your ship suddenly malfunctions and crashes. Well, this isn’t the best way to start your journey on an alien planet, right?
Such is the story and setting of MEGALAN 11. It’s a puzzle exploration title from Sometimes You, delivering a rather chill yet challenging experience that puts you in the shoes of a crew member who has to survive and escape a hostile planet. It’s not the most comprehensive or realistic adventure, but it offers a fantastic few hours of gameplay that will challenge your wits. After all, you’ll probably end up scratching your head since your fellow crew members aren’t exactly keen on cooperating.
So, should you give MEGALAN 11 a shot? The game is now available on the Switch for $9.99, and here’s what it has to offer:
Plotline
MEGALAN 11 puts you in the shoes of a scientific expedition spaceship crew member. However, someone sends an SOS signal when you pass by a desert planet. You’ll then try to help, but unfortunately, things don’t go well. Your ship crashes, but thankfully, you’re equipped with the expertise to survive when things go south. Moreover, the crash site is near a ruined yet salvageable structure, so all isn’t lost; you can gather materials and find a way to obtain crucial resources so the desert won’t gobble you up. Plus, it also means you’ll be able to find materials to fix your ship and leave after 11 days.
Gameplay
After the end of the first cutscene, you’ll immediately start your journey in MEGALAN 11. There are two difficulty choices that will determine your overall playstyle. Normal is an easier-than-usual experience where you can take your time and don’t have to meet the 11-day deadline. Meanwhile, Hard mode is a tad more strict, with more challenging conditions and strict adherence to the deadline. The latter is much more suited for players aiming for multiple playthroughs.
After the initial cutscene, you’ll first notice the environment you’ll find yourself. It’s a massive desert with red, shifting sands and thriving alien life that is either docile or aggressive, depending on your chosen difficulty level. What sticks out like a sore thumb is what seems like the ruins of an alien structure. It’s where you’ll spend most of your time in MEGALAN 11. Basically, you’ll have to make it start running again by turning on the electricity and salvage materials that can help you repair its facilities. Ultimately, you’ll then get to patch your ship up and leave the planet.
MEGALAN 11’s gameplay is more of a fetch quest adventure where the materials you’ve gathered can be put together to fix objectives or create items that let you deal with obstacles more effectively. For example, you can craft a machine to scare away the local animals. You’ll also get to create essentials for your ship and base, but things can get a little grindy, considering that you have to make several runs to get everything you need. Thankfully, the controls are pretty simple, and the overall gameplay is fairly intuitive once you get the hang of things.
One of the main difficulties I’ve had with MEGALAN 11 is the lack of guidance, especially at the start. Sure, there are hints and clear-cut objectives in the latter parts, which made things a little hard to figure out. Moreover, I had a bit of trouble the first time I booted the game up; after the first cutscene, my crew left, and I was left to wonder where they went. Nevertheless, things do get a bit better as you progress further.
Graphics/Sound
In terms of presentation, MEGALAN 11 excels. Though the character designs feel somewhat simplified, the world looks visually pleasing. There’s a lack of variety in the desert, but the entire journey made it feel like I was exploring the world of Dune, thanks to the glittering red sands. The same can be said about the audio design, which delivers a conducive atmosphere for games of this genre.
Conclusion
Overall, MEGALAN 11 is a fantastic game that deserves a spot on your Switch library. It’s a relatively short experience, yet it provides an adventure worth undertaking. It’s not the most exciting game out there, yet it’s undoubtedly worth a shot. It’s priced at $9.99; give it a shot today, and start your extraterrestrial journey!
