Summary

Fort Solis is a narrative-driven adventure-slash-walking simulator that’s set in the near future where humanity has managed to set up various satellite colonies on the red planet. Join both Jack Leary and Jessica Appleton, two engineers from Fort Minor, as they were thrown head-first into an adventure of a lifetime when they went to investigate an unusual manual lockdown notice sent by a nearby research and drilling colony, Fort Solis. What will they find there?

Plotline

Fort Solis is a narrative-heavy adventure game, and as such, its story and writing, aside from its visuals and atmosphere, are crucial to carrying the full weight of its gameplay. In this respect, the game did a fantastic job. The writing is as great as the cast who brought the characters to life, and the story is intriguing right from the start, keeping you glued to the screen as you try to figure out what really happened to the inhabitants of Fort Solis, the same as the protagonists. The game’s story is split into four hour-long (approximately) chapters, each with an exciting at the end (except for the last chapter).

In this game, you play as both Jack Leary and Jessica Appleton, two engineers from Fort Minor, who were out fixing a damaged hull before a Martian storm. They received an unusual manual lockdown notice from nearby Fort Solis, so Jack went to the colony base to investigate the issue while Jessica stayed behind to finish their work.

It quickly became apparent to Jack that the lockdown wasn’t just a fluke or a power outage caused by the Martian storm when a colony seemingly void of life greeted him. Driven by a need to know, he decided to stick around to scour the place in search of answers. What will he find?

Gameplay

If you’re familiar with any of Telltale’s story-driven adventure games like The Expanse – A Telltale Series, or even any narrative-driven adventures like Deliver Us the Moon, or its equally popular sequel, Deliver Us Mars, you should feel right at home in this game. It has many elements of a walking simulator, where you’ll just be required to walk the character, whom you’ll be playing in the third person from one point to another based on the objective given.

Of course, you’re free to explore the place in between, and in Fort Solis, you’re given plenty to look at and interact with, whether it is a little wind-up astronaut toy or some sketches done by one of the people at Fort Solis. There are also collectibles – in the form of posters – that you can collect simply by interacting with them, as well as interesting items that, when interacted with, will reveal extra details and story backgrounds about the world Jack and Jessica live in, and the personalities of various Fort Solis staff.

If you’re an achievement hunter, you’ll also be delighted to know that some of the items you may find can be interacted with in a way to trigger an achievement. For instance, you could have Jack drink on the job to get an achievement. Similarly, if you managed to solve the Rubik’s cube that you find on someone’s desk, you can get another.

From time to time, you may encounter an obstacle that will prevent you from going further, that is unless you find what you need, be it a higher-level access card or an i5 node that you can use to power up unpowered doors. There are also terminals that you can access to unlock certain doors, some of which may require a password to access. The password is usually located nearby and is quite obvious… that is, if you’re looking closely for it. In certain situations, you can even use the wrist console to bypass door locks, allowing you access to areas that were blocked off before.

Similar to Telltale’s games, you’ll also encounter quick-time events (QTEs) in Fort Solis from time to time. However, unlike their games, failing the quick-time event doesn’t break immersion by forcing you to replay the QTEs repeatedly until you “get it right”. Instead, the character will simply suffer a near-death moment, but the story will progress (almost) as usual.

Graphics/ Sound

Fort Solis has high-quality, incredibly realistic graphics that rival that of Telltale’s The Expanse – A Telltale Series and Deliver Us Mars. The details here are simply astonishing, and the visuals go well with the game’s theme.

In terms of sound, the game uses a variety of sound effects and background music to craft an atmosphere that matches the scene and location you’re in. The voice acting is fantastic too. The characters are all very well-casted, with the voice actors managing to bring their respective characters fully to life, even if the characters they play only appear in video logs.

Conclusion

All in all, Fort Solis is an adventure game that sci-fi fans looking for an intriguing story would love to enjoy. The writing is flawless here, and there are plenty of other stuff to check out while exploring the colony base and following the objectives required of you. The graphics and sound here are astounding as well, giving the game its immersive atmosphere, and breathing life into its many characters.
