Summary
Destroy All Humans! 2 Reprobed is a faithful remake of a hilarious cult-classic; a first-person adventure title that lets you assume the clone of the Furon alien with the Southern-drawl, Cryptosporidium 138, as he embarks on a mission to stop the Russians, specifically the KGB led by one, Agent Oranchov, from trying to kill him.
Plotline
This game is set after the events of the first game which sees the original alien invaders, specifically the Furon by the name of Cryptosporidium 137 as being killed in action.
The thing is though, Furons can clone themselves and pose convincingly as humans. As such, Cryptosporidium 137 has now been reborn as “Cryptosporidium 138”. However, unlike his predecessor, Crypto 138 is much superior because it contains pure Furon DNA, harvested from human brains by Orthopox-13, the mastermind of the original invasion. He also has this mysterious new mutation referred to only as “The Package”.
The Americans are completely oblivious about the fact that the Furons they have supposedly defeated actually survived, even allowing Crypto 138 enter the White House at one point.
However, the Russians managed to catch wind of this. They feel that both aliens are a significant threat to the Soviet Union and they intend to put an end to the Furons. To do so, they’ve sent their best agent, Agent Oranchov, with an army of KGB agents into the field. The KGB has many tricks up their sleeves, including blasting the Furon’s mothership into smithereens, forcing Orthopox-13 to download his consciousness into a Virtual Pox device. It is up to Crypto 138 - and by extension, you – to stop them.
As you play, you’ll get to progress through the story, scenario by scenario, complete with crazy fun missions (both main and optional ones) as well as entertaining dialogues and cutscenes.
Gameplay
Destroy All Humans! 2 Reprobed is a mission-based 3D adventure game with a relatively open-world city for you to explore and wreck some havoc in. By “relatively”, I meant that at one point, you’ll encounter a warning if you go too far outside the open-world area, which would eventually fail your mission, forcing you to restart.
Combat is very fun here, especially if you enjoy playing as a fairly-overpowered and superior alien species. You can go the “Rambo” route and just cause mayhem everywhere you go, or you can choose the stealth route and make your way to your target with clever disguises. You’ve got an arsenal of powerful abilities/weapons at your disposal to wreck some real havoc on humanity. You can, for instance, zap them using a chain-lightning gun, or hurl them into space. You can unlock new abilities with
However, in most cases, you’ll need a healthy blend of both. After all, some missions will require you to get the correct disguise to infiltrate some restricted area, walk among the humans while reading their minds to get clues as to where someone may be, or to talk to someone if you want to get them to spill the beans. After all, violence is often not the only way to solve problems, as much as Crypto 138 wanted it to be the contrary!
To do so, you’ll need to be quite sneaky about it. One easier way is to use your Free Love ability to get the people partying, so much so that they won’t notice you bodysnatching one of them. Even if you don’t have enough people to “Free Love”, you can use this ability to make them complacent – and not shooting at you – so you can bodysnatch them.
The goal here is to have no one else noticing the bodysnatching in progress. If you get caught, the person who noticed it will then call the cops on you, which would make it very hard to sneak about. You can also bodysnatch someone for only so long. Once the time limit is reached or when you decide to exit the body, the person you’ve bodysnatched can recover from the daze and then call the cops on you too. So, you might want to wipe their memory with your ability, similar to what Men-in-Black did.
The game really picks up steam once you’ve unlocked your flying saucer, affectionately dubbed as the Saucer. With your UFO, you can really cause some damage with your Death Rays, go invisible with a limited-time invisibility cloak, or even “abduct” humans with your vacuum-like suction device which will allow you to use the genetic materials harvested to upgrade Crypto’s various abilities.
That said, you can’t simply land your Saucer here in any open area in this game. There are several designated landing spots that you can land a Saucer on. To unlock them, you’ll need to first complete whatever that’s required of you at the Arkvoodle statue located at each landing spot. This remake adds a very helpful slow-motion-supported repulsor that repels missiles for the Saucer, along with many cool skins for both Crypto and the Saucer.
Besides useful items like the datacore, which stores new weapons and items that you can use when picked up, the city you get to explore also has collectibles that you can find and pick up, namely jukebox records.
One very welcome update to the game is Crypto’s new “hoverboard shoes” ability. It’s a very convenient mode of transport, to zip through the city quickly without having a disguise on. Of course, you can also do so via the rooftops, by coupling it with a few bursts from your jetpack as you leap over gaps between the rooftops. In this remake, the developers have also fleshed out the side missions, giving them more cutscenes and dialogues, making them feel as much a part of the gameplay as the main missions.
Similar to the original, Destroy All Humans! 2 Reprobed isn’t a family-friendly game. The game is filled with sexual inuendoes that aren’t suitable for kids.
Graphics/ Sound
The graphics and sound have seen a massive upgrade in this brilliant remake. From the textures and the environment, to the guns and characters, everything looks gorgeous amnd comparable to modern 3D adventure titles. Even the cutscenes are the cinematics are very well-done. The music and voice acting have also seen a nice upgrade, while staying true to the original game.
That said, I did encounter several rather funny visual glitches, such as seeing someone sitting in a supposedly-invisible car on the road. It’s no biggie though. In fact, it kind of made the game funnier.
Conclusion
Destroy All Humans! 2 Reprobed is, without a doubt, a remake done right! Not only does it fix and/or removed everything that players have hated in the original sequel, it comes with huge improvements in all sectors, be it the graphics, the sound, or even some Quality-of-Life features within its gameplay, while still sticking true to its “source material” – unlike Netlflix’s The Witcher, allowing fans of the original game to re-experience the same adventures albeit with a much modern appearance.
So, if you love playing the original game, you’ll definitely want to play this faithful remake Even if you’re new to the series, Destroy All Humans! 2 Reprobed will have you laugh at its many jokes, as you wreck complete havoc on unsuspecting humans.
