Gameplay

Ready to start racing... or should I say... drifting? Well, to get started you should first know that Drift Trike requires shockwave to run and thus, it might be best to try the game out on Firefox or a browser that is other than Chrome. After all, you’ll need the game to work to be able to enjoy playing it!

Once the game’s loaded, it is highly recommended that you check out its controls first. You’ll be using the arrow keys to steer your trike in this game. However, it can be really difficult to turn corners when your trike is going at maximum speed. Hence, there are several other keys that you should be aware of. For example, you can drift (which will allow your trike to move a lot faster) around corners using the “X” key. With drift, you can easily overtake the other AI players, provided that you don’t crash into anything in the process.

While drifting, your trick-o-meter at the bottom right side of the screen will gradually fill up. Once the meter lights up (it is also accompanied by a helpful sound effect), you’ll need to release your hold on the drift key to perform a trick, which will earn you bonus score points. In other words, the more you drift, the more the trick-o-meter will charge up. As a consequence, the more awesome your tricks will be, leading to more “pedal fast” (or “speed”) boost you will receive. You can activate your speed boost using the “Z” key.

The trick is pretty compulsory to do in Drift Trike as when your trick-o-meter is charged, you mustn’t wait too long to release the X key or you’ll fall, losing all the ground you’ve gained while drifting and more as your character gets back up again. So, knowing when to drift and when to let go of the drift key is important to ensure victory in this game.

As you’re racing, you should try to collect as many stars along the way as you can. Stars contribute points to your overall score for that level and by getting more stars, you can boost up your rank on the leaderboard. Besides stars, there are also “M” bonuses that you can also collect. Unlike stars, “M” bonuses provide a lot more points (10 times more points). So, do try to get them but not too much so that it’ll cost you the entire race.

In addition to the unique controls and gameplay, Drift Trike also offers a plethora of challenging race courses for you to race on. Some examples include, “To the mountains”, “through the canyon” and “into the forest”. To gain access to new race courses, you’ll first need to conquer the previous race course. If you failed a race, you get to start at the last level you’ve failed in (Unlike most endless runner games, at least you won’t need to start all over again). Not to mention, these race courses are set in beautifully-rendered locations making the effort and hard work to get to the next location a very rewarding experience.

The race courses in Drift Trike are very interestingly designed as they are filled with interactive objects like hay bales, and barrels of water that will slow you down when smashed into. They are usually placed in the middle of the road or beside ramps. Ramps, on the other hand, help by giving your trike a boost. There are also plenty of more solid items on the road, such as parked vehicles, other players’ trikes, or even the barriers at both sides of the road. If you slam into these more solid items, there’s a chance you may get flipped over. If that happens, you’ll be “respawned” at the closest respawn spot, but the spawning process will take some time, causing you to lose a lot of ground to the other players.

As mentioned, there’s a leaderboard in the game which lists out the daily, weekly and monthly high scores of all the players who have enjoyed the game recently. Interestingly, you can even challenge these other players to a race via the leaderboard – there’s a challenge button right beside their respective rankings. Unfortunately though, there are no options for you to buy new trikes or customize your own trike since Drift Trike is a pretty simple (but fun) game by design.

Community

Drift Trike has over 100 thousand monthly active players, but surprisingly, it has a lot less likes on its unmaintained Facebook fan page. That being said, if you enjoyed the game very much and would like to discuss tips or tricks with your fellow players, you might have better luck by checking out the forums over at Miniclip’s own game portal instead.

Graphics/ Sound

The game features nice hip hop music with some nice beats that will definitely get those adrenaline molecules rushing! In terms of the 3D graphics, Drift Trike did okay. The visuals aren’t exactly top-notch, but its quality is pretty good for a casual-type, browser-based game. After all, the game is completely free to play (no cash shop), so I guess no complaints there.
