Summary
Engage the opposing naval forces with a team of your own in this exciting 10-vs-10 MMO game, Warship Rising! Developed with eSports in mind, the game offers players with the exhilaration of fast-paced combat in addition to multiple game modes, maps and a wide variety of warships, all of which are based on real life warships, to unlock. You can even customize your naval vessel with the best guns and modules so your warship will be able to dominate the other team at the seas!
Gameplay
To begin your military career at sea, you’ll first need to sign a form to officiate your enrollment before heading over to the Naval Base at San Diego where an attractive Lieutenant Halsey will be conducting your training (a.k.a. tutorial). As the game might be a tad bit complicated, especially for those who have not played a similar game before, the tutorial can prove to be incredibly helpful. Anyway, you can’t skip it either so there’s that.
The controls in Warship Rising is amazingly responsive to your every touch, but all the functions might feel a bit cumbersome unless you’ve figured out the trick of using your left finger to aim your reticle while your right finger will be hovering over the fire button, ready to press it at a moment’s notice. This might be a more effective playing method rather than having one hand do both aiming and shooting. However, this also means that you will not be changing your ship’s speed or direction while you are doing all of that since both of these controls are placed on the left side of the screen.
There are generally two main types of weapons you can use in this game – the normal firing button and the torpedoes. Like World of Warships, you’ll need to aim your reticle slightly ahead of a moving enemy vessel just so you can hit it since your missiles, bullets, or torpedoes will take some time to reach the warship. To make the most of your shots, you can also use the binoculars option to “scope in” on your target.
Warship Rising has a really nice selection of warships, ranging from cruisers and destroyers to submarines and aircraft carriers, from various countries for you to play with... and yes, you can own multiple ships. To unlock a new ship, you’ll need to gather enough materials to upgrade all of the ship’s modules before upgrading the ship by a tier. You can (and will need to) continue upgrading every part of your warship to increase the ship’s tier and hence, boosting its stats. Aside from modules, you can even upgrade the guns you equip on your ships or swap them out for something better.
All of these ships are also modelled after their actual real-life counterparts and this is one selling point that may delight warship enthusiasts.
Now you’ve got your ship ready, it’s time to see some actual action! To play a match, you’ll need to spend fuel. Fuel is, as you may expect, a somewhat limited commodity which will replenish over time. However, if you really need to, you can always buy more using real money or ask your friends to gift you more fuel.
There are two forms of battles at the moment – Team, which allows you to assemble your team of friends before heading off into battle; or Battle that will use the game’s matchmaking system to match you up with random players from all over the world. The game has a nice variety of maps so far and the game modes – victory conditions – are pretty varied, including occupying a control point for a specified time or sinking the most enemy ships.
Considering that the game is mainly team-based, teamplay is incredibly important in Warship Rising. You’ll need to work with your teammates if you aim to win, and this includes knowing when your teammates need your help and actually lending them the help they need. It’s always a bad idea to go “lone wolf” in a team-oriented game after all. Communication between teammates is also key, so you should make use of the game’s chat system to quickly rely crucial information to your team.
At the end of the match, you’ll get to view your personal stats in addition to the overall match details and your match rewards as well. Not to mention, the game is pretty generous in the sense that you can also collect some really sweet rewards simply by completing quests and achievements.
Being a free-to-play game, Warship Rising has an in-game shop that sells a variety of goodies – mainly ship parts, guns and upgrade materials – in exchange for honor points, game currency (silvers) or premium currency (Gold). Interestingly, there are also special warships that you can buy using Gold but it’s still uncertain whether these ships are overpowered in any way.
The game has a tiered VIP system too. However, like most games, Warship Rising provides VIPs with possibly a bit too many perks, such as a brand-new warship, which may tilt battles in the spender’s favor. VIPs will also have access to a special VIP shop where they can spend their purchased Gold.
Community
Warship Rising provides a guild system for like-minded players to group up and possibly play together. You can opt to join an existing guild once your naval base reached the level 3 mark, or you could simply spend 500k silvers to create one of your own. Being part of a guild will grant you access to special guild-only features, but in return, you’ll be expected to contribute to the guild’s funds and actively participate in any guild events.
Graphics/ Sound
The graphics in Warship Rising is really great for a mobile game. The ships are all nicely-modelled and look realistic enough. However, considering that many games have managed better visuals, the quality of graphics in this game might not be able to withstand a closer scrutiny.
Surprisingly, the game chose to go with a nice soothing soundtrack which I have to say is the perfect choice rather than going for a tune that’s more upbeat. The game even has voice acting, mainly for Lieutenant Halsey, but I find it rather odd and quite humorous that Halsey often refers to herself in the third person.
Conclusion
Overall, Warship Rising is an impressive and competitive MMO game that puts you behind the wheel of a mighty warship. The ship customization and upgrade system as well as the gameplay are somewhat more simplistic than a game like World of Warships but these features are well-suited for a mobile game. In terms of variety, the game is currently set on the right path, but with time, the devs might want to add in new maps, ships and such stuff to help keep the game fresh and fun for their players.
So, if you enjoy playing World of Warships but are looking for a simpler game that you can play on the go, Warship Rising might just be the game you need! Be sure to give it a try!
