Summary

SwitchBlade is a vehicle-based MOBA game where you’ll get to choose two out of a well-varied lineup of vehicles, and use them to take down the enemy core as well as any other enemy vehicles that get in your way, to win a match. The game may not have a massive player base, probably because the game’s still in early access, but it’s insanely fun and addictive. Definitely worth installing the game, especially if you enjoy playing MOBAs!

Gameplay

SwitchBlade starts you off with an optional tutorial mode which I’d highly recommend you go through even if you’re a “MOBA vet”. It only takes a few minutes and it covers all the major aspects of the game, including its unique features such as vehicle-exchanging and skill upgrades.

What is SwitchBlade? Well, it’s a MOBA that combines fast-paced vehicular warfare with the tower-pushing and creeps-protecting, tower defense-like gameplay popularized by the MOBA genre. So, basically, you’ll need to work with your teammates in a team of 5 to stop the “other side” from taking down your tower cores while pushing to take down theirs.

Unlike classic MOBAs whereby the towers can be directly attacked if you’re within range and have some creeps around to help redirect the damage, in this game, the towers are generally defenseless aside from their shielding.

However, the shield here is unique because you can’t attack it directly. Instead, you’ll need to do your best to protect your creeps just so they can take down the shield for you (by suicide bombing it), but naturally, things aren’t that simple. Each tower has at least a main turret nearby that is designed to kill any creeps that come close enough, and, to protect your creeps, you’ll need to keep the turret suppressed. Note that you can’t destroy them entirely unless the tower they are linked to is destroyed.

There are also enemy creeps that you’ll need to help your team's creeps with – by getting rid of them, of course – and any enemy player/vehicles that happen to be protecting that lane.

Once the shield is down, the tower’s core will then be exposed. This is where you can jump in and contribute some firepower. The creeps will also help if they manage to make it to the core intact. Taking down a core doesn’t bolster your creeps in any way, but I think it grants your team a nice lump sum of cash.

In this game, the money and experience points earned are separate. What this means is that each player will earn experience individually while the cash earned is shared equally to everyone in the team. You can then spend the cash you have to upgrade your vehicle’s stats or purchase consumables like heals and damage-reduction shields at the shop.

As opposed to traditional MOBAs as well, this game only has 2 main lanes – left and right – though, there’s a tower right in the middle of the map. This is usually the first tower to fall. There are no “jungling” per se but there is plenty of space in the middle that you can use to avoid the creeps and head straight to a tower with its core exposed. Ultimately, to win, you’ll need to destroy the core of the last tower.

What’s really unique about SwitchBlade is the amazing variety of vehicles you can get access to right from the get-go. I’m not sure if they will eventually add in a rotation system to restrict access of these vehicles to free-to-play players, but well, you can give every vehicle a try if you play the game now.

SwitchBlade is a free-to-play game and hence, sells something on the side for real money. However, unlike some MOBAs that sell cosmetics, this game sells Battle Passes which are basically seasonal premium passes that you can level up. By being a battle pass owner, you’ll be able to level it up and earn premium rewards like cool premium skins, premium currency, and tons of high-grade rewards. As the owner of the first battle pass, you’ll also get a brand new and currently-exclusive vehicle, the Angel.

Community

Despite being a highly competitive MOBA, SwitchBlade is still a pretty chill game to play. However, one main downside of this game is the lack of players. Even as a free-to-play game, SwitchBlade just don’t have enough players to even fill a match with 10 human players. From the several matches I’ve played, the most human players I’ve had is three, including myself. The others are filled with AI players that can be quite competent in the game.

Graphics/ Sound

The graphics in this game is astounding! I also really like the cool and flashy visual effects that come with the abilities you get to use. The music played in the lobby is pretty upbeat, enough to get your heart pumping extra blood to your arms and hands in preparation for the intense fight ahead. Similar to the visual effects, the sound effects are great here as well. If you really listen carefully, you can even hear a nearby enemy before you see him.

Conclusion

Overall, SwitchBlade is a pretty amazing and fun addition to the MOBA genre although technically, the game doesn’t really add much to the typical format you’d come to expect of a MOBA. However, due to being an indie MMO, the game’s main concern is to get as many players as possible to play it. If not, this game would probably end up like many other indie MMOs and fade into obscurity. So, if you do plan on trying the game – it’s free after all! – make sure to bring your MOBA-loving friends along!
