Summary

Finally, we now have a MOBA battle royale in the form of Eternal Return. Though still in early access, it found its focus on crafting and survival. It’s an 18-man battle royale where players have to find materials to create more potent weapons, equipment, and essential items. However, it falls prey to its peers’ many issues, although it tries to offset those drawbacks with mob-like enemies.

Created by South Korean developer Nimble Neuron, the game seamlessly fuses two genres while adding survival elements. In a world saturated with the same old battle royale games with copy and paste gameplay, it’s a breath of fresh air.

If Eternal Return is something you’re thinking of trying, take a look at what it has to offer before clicking on the download button:

Plotline

The game is set in the abandoned Lumia Island, inhabited only by wildlife. The characters are virtually human experiments in a project headed by a shadowy organization known as AGLAIA, which aims to create a new race of extraordinary humans. Moreover, from Aya, the gun-wielding police lady, to Nadine the Wild Huntress, every character has their own back story you can access and read on the characters tab.

Gameplay

Eternal Return follows the gameplay loop of other battle royale games. First, you’ll choose where to drop in Lumia Island then loot for items. Instead of taking ready-made equipment, you’re supposed to obtain materials from boxes, barrels, and everything else in the environment and use them as crafting ingredients to create more powerful gear. It takes a while to find your way around the user interface, but you can get around this learning curve with the well-made material targeting system.

The game has a wide variety of characters, each with unique abilities. They also wield different weapons (like guns, knives, bare fists, and motorcycles), which, in turn, require other materials. This means that depending on the character you’re using, you need to drop near specific locations if you want a fast start. For example, if you need an item that requires a piano wire, you have to drop in the chapel to procure one. Though the crafting system is seamless and excellently made, it deviates players’ attention to the battles. You’ll spend at least 90% of the time looking for materials to upgrade your rifle into a Gatling gun, which isn’t exactly ideal. There are currently only two characters available for free players (one of which has to be unlocked via the tutorial), while you can gain access to the others by purchasing the starter pack.

Fights can range from incredibly fast-paced to an extremely slow slugfest, depending on the characters’ equipment. The controls are similar to most MOBA titles, so you’ll feel at home if you’ve played games like DOTA 2 and League of Legends. You can activate skills using QWERTY and items from number keys 1-8. As you level up, you’ll earn skill points to upgrade them

Lumia Island has several locations, each with its perks and items available to loot. These range from the graveyard, factory, and the central chapel. There’s also a pond where you can fish for food and a hospital with an abundance of healing items. Meanwhile, there are animals like wolves, wild dogs, and boars you can slay for food and materials, and their presence helps offset the monotony of crafting. The safe zone aspect works by activating a self-destruct mechanism inside characters when they stay inside a restricted area for too long. Also, you’ll be exposed to in-map elements like the security cam and hyperloop. The latter lets you instantly teleport to other locations. Finally, the island’s ambiance and creepy vibe it gives off are akin to a horror movie/thriller, and it helps keep your adrenaline pumping.

Community

Eternal Return solo matchmaking is relatively quick, although you may need to spend a few minutes waiting for duo and squad battles. There are also ranked modes if you want your name to appear on top of the leaderboard. The game also hosts a thriving community on Steam, which churns out YouTube videos and guides created by veteran players you can learn from.

Graphics/Sound

In terms of presentation, Eternal Return excels. It has an outstanding anime art style and UI design, making the crafting aspect more streamlined and intuitive. However, we recommend going through the relatively long tutorial to get used to everything. The game runs smoothly on a mid-tier PC (1060-6GB, i5 processor) with zero framerate drops and stability issues. There’s also voice acting that meets expectations, and the experience it provides is akin to watching a well-dubbed series.

Conclusion

Overall, Eternal Return is a must-play if you’re looking for something new in the battle royale and MOBA genres, and Nimble Neuron created an excellent formula. Although its crafting aspects can be a double-edged sword, it more than makes up for it with its exciting battles and plethora of memorable characters. You can see the amount of love the developers put into the game, and we can safely say they did a fantastic job.

So, we recommend diving into Lumia now to make yourself a human test subject.
