Gameplay
Solitaire Magic isn’t very different from any other classic solitaire games out there. You’ll just need to stack cards up on the deck in an attempt to send all the cards from both the deck and the board back to the foundation. Cards are stacked up based on their value - the King card being the highest-valued card and the Ace being the card with the lowest value. For example a Queen card can only be placed on a King card and not the other way around.
You will also need to stack up cards according to their order in a suit. This means that you won’t be able to skip the Queen card and straightaway place a Jack on top of a King card. Not to mention, you can only stack cards up “alternately”. In other words, you can only place a red card (a diamond or hearts card) on top of a black card (a clubs or spades card), and vice versa. Also, the solitaire games that you play in Solitaire Magic are not timed.
Although Solitaire Magic isn’t exactly a competitive game, it is only natural for players to want to be the best in the game... and the best players get the best scores. So, how do you earn these score points? Well, in this game, you can earn score points by sending a card to the foundation (10 points), uncovering a face-down card on the board (5 points) or dragging and dropping a card from the deck onto the board (5 points).
Interestingly, you can also give your score points a boost via the multipliers that you can obtain by performing combos. To get a combo running, you’ll need to make at least 5 correct moves consecutively. Correct moves involve stacking up cards on the deck. Be careful though! If you make any other moves, such as drawing a card from the deck, you will deactivate the combo bonus and will have to start all over again. Try to get as much bonuses as you can so you can earn a higher high score!
However, the scoring system does penalize you for certain actions in Solitaire Magic. For instance, restacking up your deck of cards after you’ve gone through them will cost you 50 points while dragging a card back from the foundation onto the playing field will cost you 15 points. Thus, be sure to minimize these penalties by avoiding mistakes. You won’t get to view your score while you’re playing though – you can only view it after you’ve completed a level.
There will also be times when you get stumped while playing. If you’re missing the right card or are stuck, you can use the Magic power-up to reveal the require card for you. Did you make a bad move? Don’t sweat it! You can easily go 1 step back by using the Undo power-up instead. You are given 20 free Undos in this game, though you can accumulate up to 30 of them.
In Solitaire Magic, you are given several ranks to progress through. Unlike most games, you won’t be earning ranks by earning score points. Instead, you’ll need to collect green tokens that are cleverly hidden under the face-down cards on the board. If you win, you can get a bonus 1 token as a reward too. Each token will contribute 50 points to your rank progression and you’ll soon be able to “level up” your rank from being a mere Novice to the slightly-better-sounding Beginner and so on and so forth. Thankfully, if you quit a game without completing it, your rank progression will not be compromised in any way. You’ll also be using these points to obtain gifts like undo and magic.
Community
The community in Solitaire Magic is pretty sizeable, though not exactly huge by any standards. If you fancy meeting your fellow players, you can drop by the game’s Facebook fan page. The page has around 136 thousand likes so far. Although the page is pretty much abandoned by the developers, quite a number of players are still active here.
Graphics/ Sound
The graphics in Solitaire Magic are pretty good. The card design looks very nice and it does make up for the lack of beautiful background images. In fact, it can be a good thing to not have a background image as you won’t be distracted from the cards at hand. In terms of music, the game doesn’t have any. However, there are some soft sound effects for when you’re moving the cards around or drawing a new card from the deck.
Conclusion
Most of the solitaire games on the internet are rather competitive in nature or at least has some form of puzzle elements in them. It can be rare to see a simple and relaxing classic solitaire game... and this is exactly what Solitaire Magic tries to achieve. Besides the Undo and the Magic (a.k.a. Hint) power-ups, this game offers the enjoyment of playing a basic solitaire game. If you’re tired of all the complicated solitaire games out there and would like to enjoy something simple for a change, Solitaire Magic is the perfect game for you. Do give it a try today!
