Plotline
In England 1812, King George the third has fallen ill and his flamboyant son, the Prince of Wales, now sits upon the throne. This is the Regency Era in which high spirited Bella lives in. She is the eldest daughter of a respectable family and like any other ladies of her age in that time, she dreams of dancing in fashionable ballrooms and winning the heart of a handsome suitor... perhaps even the sophisticated and most eligible Lord Henry Worthington.
But Bella’s hopes have been dashed... now that her foolish brother, Edward, has gambled away the family fortune, leaving her facing an arranged marriage to her odious neighbor, Mr. Bleakly. Can Bella restore her family’s wealth and reputation... and will her dreams come true?
Gameplay
After inputting your name, the game starts off by asking you whether you would like to play in normal mode or hard mode. Naturally, the hard mode will have tougher goals for you to achieve. Once you’ve chosen a mode, you can then enter into a proper game.
Now that Bella’s future is in your hands, you should quickly learn your cards! The basics of Regency Solitaire are similar to most of the solitaire games out there. You just need to select a tableau card (the card on the board) 1 number higher or lower than the face-up card at the foundation at the bottom of the screen. This means that a 7 can be placed on top of an 8 and subsequently a 6 can be placed on top of the 7 you’ve just placed. The reverse, whereby you place a 9 on the 8 card at the foundation and subsequently, you can place a 10 on the 9, is true as well. Suits and colors don’t matter in this solitaire game!
However, you shouldn’t just simply choose a card to collect from the board. Instead, you should try to get a chain of them! This is because the game features a combo system whereby after you’ve collected 6 cards in a row from the board, you’ll earn a nice multiplier bonus which will substantially boost your gold earned at the end of the chapter. The more cards you can chain up, the higher multiplier you’ll get.
Unfortunately, like all good things, your combo will eventually need to end. If there are no more valid moves, you will then need to draw a new card from the stock pile (your deck) which will effectively end your combo. Do also take note that you have limited number of cards in your stock pile and once you ran out of cards, you have no choice but to end the game and well, you’ll lose a lot of score points. Not to mention, since each level offers up to 3 stars for you to earn, if you fail to collect all cards from the board, you’ll certainly earn less stars or even sometimes none! Thankfully though, you are still able to proceed with the story and are not forced to repeat the level.
Besides collecting all cards from the board, there are certain special levels, usually at the very end of a chapter, whereby you have to match all the cards that are hiding the item you need to find. Some examples of the earliest items that you’ll need to find are Bella’s mother’s exquisite fan and the cupid statue. Though, after you’ve uncovered the item and have collected it, the game resumes and you will have to try to collect the remaining cards on the board.
In addition, in Regency Solitaire, you can not only expect encountering tricky card arrangements, but also special cards – some are helpful while some are not - that will require you to change how you play the game. These special cards include the Joker, wild cards, lock and key cards, regal lock and bow cards. The Joker is a very useful card which allows you to clear out the value of the card on your foundation and lets you place any card of your own in its place. Wild cards, on the other hand, works a lot like the Joker, except that each wild card has their own number etched to it. You will then have to find matches for that new number instead!
The lock and key cards, regal lock and bow cards works much like obstacles do in Candy Crush Saga. The lock and key cards in Regency Solitaire work like a lock and key in real life. You’ll have to search for the key card in order to use it to unlock the locked card. The regal lock, on the other hand, requires you to find and collect royal cards (K, Q or J) to reduce the counter on the lock. Each card will reduce the counter by 1 and when it reaches zero, the card will then be finally unlocked. For bow cards, you’ll need to play them twice in order to remove them from the board.
These obstacle cards may be troublesome and tough to clear, but they do spice up the gameplay by a significant amount. However, there will be times when you might need some help to get 3 stars for a level. In this case, Regency Solitaire has plenty of power-ups to help you out, such as the Cupid Cameo and the Lyre Cameo. The Cupid Cameo works by removing any 1 card you choose from the board while the Lyre Cameo reshuffles the cards on your board into a new arrangement. These power-ups recharge themselves over time, though it may take quite a while before you can use those power-ups again. Furthermore, there is also the undo option which allows you to go back by 1 move in the game. By default, you are given only 1 undo per level, but you can easily get more by purchasing certain items...
...and this brings us to one of the most interesting aspects of the game – the redecoration of the ballroom in Bella’s home into a ravishing Regency ballroom! Use the points you’ve earned from playing to purchase decorative items or new clothes or accessories to earn special bonuses. For instance, by purchasing a portrait of Edward (Bella’s brother), you will get more face-up cards at the start of each hand, or by buying the card table, your combos will start after a run of just 5 cards (instead of 6)! Perhaps the only downside is that you are unable to choose where you want the décor to go. You just buy the item and it will magically appear in Bella’s ballroom.
Community
The size of the community at Regency Solitaire is rather decently large for a solitaire game due to its extensive coverage by various game review sites praising its gameplay and the storyline. The game may not have as many likes on its Facebook fan page, but the game has a pretty thriving community over at their forums on Big Fish Games’ website. You should head over to the forums if you fancy meeting your fellow players!
Graphics/ Sound
The game has astonishing beautiful, hand-drawn graphics that perfectly depict the day-to-day life of the noble class in Regency England. The cards and characters are particularly well-done! Regency Solitaire also boasts of containing specially-composed, high quality classical music that is very pleasant to listen to. There is quite some variety too in terms of sound.
Conclusion
All in all, Regency Solitaire is a very enjoyable (to the point of addictive) and challenging Solitaire game that describes the life of Bella, a young lady of noble birth, who are relentless in her pursuit to find her true love! In this game, you have to use your card-playing skills to help Bella match solitaire cards to remove them from the board and earn money. With the money you’ve earned, you can then help her restore her family’s ballroom and her family’s wealth! However, you will have to be quick, as the odious Mr. Bleakly has arranged her hand in marriage with her father! Can Bella restore her family’s wealth and reputation... and will her dreams come true?
