Gameplay

To start playing, you’ll first need to select your hero. There are 45 heroes as of current from the 3 major universes created by Blizzard, namely from Warcraft, Starcraft and Diablo. For example, Arthas the Lich King, Thrall, Warchief of the Horde and Jaina Proudmoore the Archmage of Kirin Tor are heroes from the Warcraft universe while Tyrael, Archangel of Justice, Diablo the Lord of Terror and Azmodan the Lord of Sin are heroes from the Diablo universe. Heroes are not completely available to players like Defense of the Ancient 2. Instead, the game adopts the heroes rotation system in League of Legends by providing 7 new heroes montly for free-to-play players to choose from. However, if you love a particular hero so much, you may also opt to purchase the hero, so he or she will be permanently unlocked for you. Each hero also comes with up to 4 different types of unlock-able and super-cool skins so that you can win your battles in style! There are a couple of skins that will change the look of a hero from being the good guy to the being bad guy. For instance, you can change Tyrael from a fighter for justice into a demonic version with his super-awesome-looking demonic skin!

These individual heroes have their own special abilities that allow them to dish out ruin in the form raining arrows, dangerous “carpet-bombing” frost wyrms or even an all-consuming hellfire! Every hero in Heroes of the Storm starts with 4 abilities, whereby 3 are active and 1 passive. The efficiency of these abilities will scale up and customized via hero talents as your hero leveled up. Furthermore, your hero will receive a heroic ability at level 10 that is unique to the hero chosen by the player while at level 20, your hero can then choose to upgrade your chosen heroic ability or pick one from a few other abilities.

In Heroes of the Storm, heroes play various roles on the battleground. Generally, these roles can be grouped into 4 main roles - warrior, assassin, support and specialist, though there are several heroes with unknown roles at the moment, such as Kel’Thuzad. Warriors are best at absorbing damage and disabling enemies, allowing them to function as a barrier between their weaker teammates and the enemy. Due to this, they usually have high health and benefit the most from defense-laden items. Assassins are the main DPS of the game as they deal high damage to single targets, allowing them to effectively destroy enemy heroes in a 1-on-1 or sometimes even 2-on-1 (that 1 is you) scenario.

In addition, the support role in Heroes of the Storm is similar to any other MOBA, whereby these magic-using support heroes are the prime source of buffs and healing spells. Due to their emphasis on casting spells, mana is perhaps one of their most important stats. The last role is the “jack-of-all-trades”-like specialists. Heroes that fall in this category often provide a wider array of play styles that can be tailored via the various specialization options (like ability upgrades) to fit almost any roles in a generic MOBA game. If you’re unsure where to start, getting a specialist may be your best bet!

In terms of in-game mechanics, Heroes of the Storm has the usual stuff like having towers lining the lanes, minions to soak up damage and lane-pushing. However, the game also provides quite a few differences that made it stood out from other MOBAs. Firstly, the game implements a shared experience system whereby players who are off to a bad start will not lag too much behind his or her teammates, making gameplay not as punishing to weaker players. Furthermore, the game does not have an in-game shop or any in-match currency. This makes Heroes of the Storm an ideal MOBA game for players, who are new to the MOBA genre, but are looking for a challenge, to play in. This is because the game removes the need for players to memorize a set list of hero items that are vital to character growth in other MOBA games, like Defense of the Ancients 2 (DotA 2) or League of Legends (LoL).

Moreover, Heroes of the Storm provides an almost revolutionary approach to designing their unique maps or battlegrounds that emphasize strongly on strategy, teamwork and team coordination. Unlike in other MOBA where the same map is repeatedly used... sometimes with just a change of the graphics, in this game, each map has its own special features. For instance, in the special 2-lane map, the Haunted Mines, players need to collect skulls by killing undeads in the mines, which will open from time to time, besides needing to defend their lanes and towers from attacks from the opposing team. These skulls are then used to power your team’s golems. The more skulls you can get, the stronger your golem will be! Once charged up, you can then unleash your team’s golem at the enemy!

However, if you’re at the receiving end of the attack, you and your team will then need to work together to bring the golem down as soon as possible in order to reduce the damage it causes. Another reason for defeating the enemy golem fast is that in the next round when the golems are summoned, they will rise from the place they last fell. You certainly won’t want to have a resurrected enemy golem right at the core of your base! Sounds like a terribly exciting map to play on, right? Well, imagine that the game contains 7 of such unique battlegrounds with one more map, called Battlefield of Eternity, where 2 immortals fight each other until the heroes intervene (based off the Diablo theme of good-vs-evil) that is coming soon.

The map layout in Heroes of the Storm is also uniquely different from conventional MOBA maps as it provides plenty of special secondary objectives that your team can capture to gain an upper hand in battle. These secondary objectives differ from battleground to battleground though there are a few common features. One of these common features includes the presence of forts. Each fort contains 3 towers, 1 keep and 1 healing fountain that players can use as a “rest stop” before heading back out to battle. These forts also provide strong gates that the opposition will have to destroy to get pass, preventing the enemies from just marching through them! There are also mercenary camps that, when defeated, will grant powerful mercenaries that will join forces with your team’s minions in assaulting the enemy positions. In addition, instead of wards, players are given watchtowers to capture to provide their respective teams with greater vision and map control, allowing you to keep an eye on enemy movements throughout the map.

Community

Heroes of the Storm has already establish itself as a new popular eSports game, especially its recently completed (in April this year) Heroes of the Dorm tournament, though it is still nowhere near the popularity that MOBA “top dogs”, League of Legends and DotA 2 have enjoyed for years. It’s getting there... especially that the game is currently released to the public to enjoy! In terms of toxicity (the term that every new MOBA player fear... to some degree), Heroes of the Storm’s level of toxicity among its players is still at a manageable level, though, naturally, there will be more toxicity if you performed poorly at higher ranked multiplayer matches.

Graphics/ Sound

The high quality graphics in Heroes of the Storm are created in a way their other games are designed in. The character models are designed with in-depth details and the animations are well-done. In terms of sound, the game doesn’t have any background music when you’re playing, but it provides plenty of sound cues and ambient sounds to let you know, for example, that a tower is now targeting you or that an enemy hero has unleashed some spell of his. Really enjoyed the voice overs that the characters have too!

Conclusion

Heroes of the Storm is a newly-released MOBA game that is brimming with potential as a contender to knock legendary MOBA games, like League of Legends or DotA 2, off their high thrones! Choose 1 from 7 different heroes that are rotated monthly and play in co-op against clever AI opponents or in multiplayer against other human players! The game also introduces plenty of unique features including its amazingly-designed battlegrounds, objective-based teamplay as well as removed in-game item shops and made experience points earned shared among other players in your team. All in all, if you are looking for intense MOBA matches with the likes of LoL or DotA 2 and yet is friendly enough for players, who have little knowledge in the genre, Heroes of the Storm is indeed the perfect game for you!
