Plotline
The discovery of a mysterious cube by a local boy has unwittingly opened a portal, releasing an evil summoner with powers to summon and control mechanical beasts who is hell-bent on conquering the peaceful kingdom of Barsia. Now these beasts are terrorizing the nation and it is up to you, the hired investigator, to find the only possible solution, the fabled fallen star, and hopefully return the summoner and her minions back to whence they’ve come from!
Gameplay
After a very impressive cinematic that introduces you to the storyline, you’ll be prompted to input your username and select a game difficulty. The game has up to 4 different difficulty levels on offer, namely casual, hard, insane and custom. For casual mode, the hint and ski meters recharge a lot faster, there are plenty of helpful messages to guide you, and there isn’t any penalty for wrong clicks. However, for players who enjoy a challenge, the insane difficulty is definitely the way to go as your skills as a hidden object gamer will be truly tested to their limits. There is the custom mode whereby players are able to adjust a difficulty setting that suit their level of skill using the nifty sliders provided as well.
Being a “Dark Parables” game, this game has quite a lot of interactive items that you can... well, interact with. Some items can be viewed in more detail when the magnifying glass cursor is present, while some items, as indicated by the hand-shaped cursor, can be picked up and stored in your inventory for use in certain locations as marked out using the moving-gears cursor. There will be times when you can combine the items in your inventory to obtain a custom item as well. Due to all these interactive items, there will be plenty of “running” about as you attempt to use a new item you’ve obtained in the various interactive locations in the game.
Furthermore, the scenes in Dark Parables: Goldilocks and the Fallen Star are interestingly unique when compared to other hidden object games. Instead of asking you to find a list of random items, you’ll need to find fragments of an item. Once you have all the fragments, they will automatically be combined to form the quest item you’ll need to progress the storyline in the game.
Although most fragments can be easily found in the scene, there will be times you might need some help. This is where the hints come in! Hints are helpful in the sense that they will point out a random fragment you seek by circling the item with sparkles. You have unlimited number of hints to use in this game with a short (or long, depending on the difficulty you chose) period of time in between for the hint to recharge itself. So, unless you’re patient enough to wait, it’s best to use the hint button sparingly.
In addition to finding fragments of items in hidden object scenes, there are also very well-hidden snowflakes in the environments or locations you are in. These snowflakes don’t really do anything except contribute towards one of your achievements. However, for the perfectionist player, finding all the snowflakes in the game will prove to be trickier and more challenging than you think!
Of course, like all the hidden object games under the “Dark Parables” series, there are also parables that you can collect from various locations. Once you have all the parables required, you can then access a mini-story about the game’s storyline and various characters. So, in some ways, these parables can be considered as collectibles that will unlock mini-stories.
Let’s not forget about another important aspect of Dark Parables: Goldilocks and the Fallen Star - the puzzles! The puzzles in this game is mainly logic based and can be rather challenging for some. In terms of concept, the puzzles do not exactly stand out, but in terms of presentation, the game offers very well-designed puzzles that players will definitely enjoy. The scene/puzzle ratio in this game is pretty much 50:50. Naturally, if a puzzle seems too tough for you to solve, you can easily skip a puzzle after waiting for the skip button to fully charge up.
Community
Being a Big Fish game, the community of this game, and the Dark Parables series in general, tend to congregate over at Big Fish’s forum. If you would like to meet your fellow players, the forums are definitely the way to go.
Conclusion
All in all, Dark Parables: Goldilocks and the Fallen Star is one of the most amazing hidden object games from the series and this is absolutely not an exaggeration. There are many scenes and puzzles to engage your brain in this game, along with plenty of parables and snowflakes to collect. The storyline of the game is pretty interesting as well. Thus, if you’re a fan of hidden object games, Dark Parables: Goldilocks and the Fallen Star is definitely one game you would want in your Big Fish library. So, check the game out today and try your best to save the kingdom of Barsia from the nefarious plans of the evil summoner!
