Help Sarah save her dying brother by getting to the last vial of the cure before the agent sent by a greedy pharmaceutical company gets to it first in this thrilling HOG, Greed: The Mad Scientist! Search for useful items in various hidden object scenes, solve challenging puzzles and enjoy a storyline that may be typical within the genre but is still interesting nonetheless.
A massive fire broke out at the Pontoon Laboratories. Thanks to the brave efforts of the firemen, the fire has only destroyed a small part of a mysterious research lab while charring other parts. However, the most crucial part of the project that the people at the lab are working on – the cure to every illness in the world, was unfortunately destroyed.
In Greed: The Mad Scientist, you play as a detective who’s investigating the scene of the fire to find out whether the fire was an accident or not… well, at least that was your job until when a young lady, Sarah, rushed up to you and asked for help. The late Dr. Goodwin has sent her a letter prior to the fire, telling her about the existence of a working cure-it-all that’s stashed away somewhere in the lab which he has specially made for her ailing brother… surely that vial hasn’t been destroyed by the fire if it’s so well-hidden away?
But of course, you’re not the only person who’s after the cure. A ruthless pharmaceutical company has sent a “hitman” to recover what they think is their property… and they will do whatever it takes to get it!
In terms of gameplay, Greed: The Mad Scientist has all the markings of a decent but typical HOG. The game seems to have a nice balance between hidden object scenes where you’ll search for random objects alongside the items you’ll actually need, adventuring, and logical puzzles that range from easy to challenging. There’s also a very helpful journal which stores crucial information about the story and also the solution for future puzzles.
The game also has 3 difficulty levels but since it has no achievements, there’s really no point in replaying the game at higher difficulties. Plus, the game seems to contain a lot of backtracking (you’ll need to go pretty far behind too) and sometimes, a previously completed HO scene may become available again (you’ll only replay a scene twice at most) but you may not notice it unless you decide to go back and look through the many areas again.
Like most of Big Fish’s HOGs, there is a discussion board of sorts where you can interact with other players who have purchased the game. However, since the game’s pretty old and a single-player game, I would say that it’s probably futile to be social about it.
The graphics look really nice for a somewhat older title. Some of the HO scenes can be really tricky as well because some of the objects are just really well-hidden. The voice acting here won’t win any awards but it’s serviceable. Although it didn’t stand out to me in any way, the music is pretty alright too.
So, to sum up, Greed: The Mad Scientist isn't exactly the best HOG out there but it's a pretty decent one. The somewhat generic story is still interesting enough to keep my attention from start to end, and the length of the game sits at a comfortable 2-hr range. Probably not the sort of game I’d buy at full price, but if you can grab it at a steep discount, by all means, go for it!
