Plotline

You received a strange letter yesterday sent in 1963! The letter warned you that you are in mortal danger and requested that you travel to Mortlake Mansion, post haste, as you are apparently the last hope of the people, who sent you the letter! There is also an almost empty map and a glittering amulet attached that are supposed to help in time of need as well.

Gameplay

The game will bring you to Mortlake Mansion right after the short introduction to the story behind the game. Here, you will need to put your power of observation to work and explore every inch of the room carefully for clues and items. Do pay close attention to any places that are marked by blinking runes - you can usually find useful items there!

Not to mention, Mystery of Mortlake Mansion also provides a cursor that will helpfully change its shape to indicate the different interactions available, you just need to know what the different shapes that the cursor adopts mean! There are 3 different types that you should be looking out for. The arrow cursor indicates exits and entrances to the various rooms in the mansion. You will usually see them appearing over unlocked doors. Locked ones will show a greyed-out eye instead.

Furthermore, you will also notice that your cursor will change into a magnifying glass when you wave it over certain places in a location. This magnifying glass indicates objects that can be examined closer. Sometimes, it will also pull you right in to a hidden object scene! Hidden object scenes are not timed in this game and there are no score points to earn. Instead, as long as you managed to complete the scene, you will obtain an object that is vital to progress the storyline in Mystery of Mortlake Mansion. Interestingly, if you’re idle for a long while, the game will also help you by highlighting one of the items you need to find with sparkles.

The hand icon, on the other hand, is interactive in nature. With the hand cursor, you can pick up items and store them in your inventory at the bottom of the screen. You could then use them on a device or mechanism later on by dragging them to the places you need and click once again to use them. You can even combine them with other items in your inventory to produce a complete object before using them as well!

As you play, you will eventually find colored crystals for the different rooms in the creepy mansion. Seek out the correct lock mechanism of the same color as the crystal you have and lock the crystal in! You’ll then be instantly teleported to a shadowy and much creepier version of the room (and world). In this shadowy world, you will be able to search for objects and clues that the real world (in-game) doesn’t have. You will also have a friend in the form of a talking crow who will gently guide you along.

Besides hidden object scenes, Mystery of Mortlake Mansion offers plenty of puzzles and mini-games for you to enjoy! These games are fairly easy to figure out even though no instructions are provided. Most of the mini-games involve matching and symbols, for instance, there was one game where you have to find and match weird magical symbols. If you find yourself stuck with a puzzle, a hidden object or just simply don’t know what to do next, you can also easily use the “hint” button (in the form of a magical amulet) located at the bottom right corner of the screen.

As you progress in your adventure at Mortlake Mansion, new notes will appear in your diary throughout the game. By clicking on the diary tab at the bottom of the screen, you can read their details and find useful information there that may just help you solve a problem you are facing in the game!

In regard to music, Mystery of Mortlake Mansion provides eerie music that befits a ghost-themed hidden object game that is rife with mystery!
