Plotline

Being a rookie mercenary, you travel the world in Vindictus in search of adventure... without much avail apparently. However, your chance to shine came around when a giant spider threaten the peace in the city. As ambitious as you are, you hop right into battle regardless of any concern for personal safety to aid the Crimson Blade, a band of professional mercenaries, in taking the monster down despite protests from the oracle in charge. The company of mercs decided to take you in as a new recruit and from there, you’ll embark on various missions for the mercs, either solo or in teams. With time and achievements, you may even rise up to become one of the most revered merc in the Crimson Blade!

Gameplay

To start, you’ll first need a character to navigate the world of Vindictus with! In this game, character and character class are one and the same. The characters are also gender-locked as they are based off on characters in another of Nexon’s games, Mabinogi.

There are 9 characters for you to choose from in Vindictus. They include Lann, quick dual-wielding warrior; Fiona, the “tank” character; Karok, a club-wielding giant of a man; Hurk, the customary, greatsword-wielding character in any Korean/Japanese game; Arisha, a combat mage who specializes in spellswords; Lynn, a graceful yet deadly dancer equipped with glaives; Vella, who uses twin swords like Lann but she can also wield swirling chain blades; Kai, the ranger with his bow and amazing crossgun (a cross between a crossbow and a gun); and lastly, Evie, proficient user of the battle scythe and staff, a summoner as well as the wielder of arcane, fire and healing magics! Each character has their own set of skills (that can be trained) and play style. However, don’t worry too much on your first character and just go with the character you like the most. If you didn’t like your character later on, you could just create a new one and go with that one instead!

After selecting a character, you’ll then need to give him, or her, a name and proceed to customize the character. As mentioned, gender is pretty much locked, but you’ll be able to change your character’s hairstyle and color, skin color, facial expression and many more! Once you’re done, you can then enter the game proper via a cool cinematic introduction whereby you became a hero, or a heroine depending on your character’s gender, by helping the Crimson Blades tackle a particularly monstrous and deadly spider.

Since the action-based combat is the bread and butter of Vindictus, it’s not entirely surprising that the game tries to introduce the combat system to you as early on as possible (through the spider fighting scene). However, you’ll only get some hands on when you start your first beginner mission at the mercenary training site. Though, you could try smashing stuff for fun on the boat prior to embarking on your beginner mission.

The controls in the game are fairly straightforward for movements and basic attacks – it is the combos and other moves that are trickier to learn and use. You’ll be using WASD to move around in Vindictus and for basic attacks, you’ll be using your left mouse button. You’ll be introduced to your “smash key” which is your right mouse button that you can use after consecutive basic attacks. The smash key will activate a powerful combo attack, but for some combo actions, you’ll need to learn them first before you can perform them. Naturally, combo skills are unlocked as you level up.

Besides merely hacking and slashing, you’ll sometimes want to mitigate some damage by avoiding or dodging blows from your attackers, particularly from boss monsters. Boss monsters usually appear at the end of every dungeon mission you participate in, by the way, and they reward you with evil cores that you can later use to exchange for some cool items! Back to the topic at hand, sometimes, by adding these evasive maneuvers into your ability lineup, you can also access a range of defensive combos as well. You can even press “R” to kick an enemy back if you need some room to run or kite monsters in a dungeon. These are pretty basic stuff for any action-based games, but the fun part’s coming right up...

The best part about the combat system in Vindictus is that you can pick up items in your surroundings, weapons or even the corpse of your fallen enemy using the “E” key. Then, you can use it as a thrown weapon (use the “E” key again to throw) or as a club to hammer your enemies into oblivion! For instance, if you looted spears from an enemy, you can then hurl it at the enemy by using it as a ranged weapon. You can also pick up vases or pots and smash or throw them into your enemies’ faces. Saw a crate or a barrel over there? Feel free to pick it right up, raise it high above the ground and start hammering enemies to death.

Why stop at picking up enemy corpses and inanimate objects? You can also pick up a living enemy and brutally smash it in the face with your weapon or even better, throw it back into its group of enemy buddies and watch as your enemies all go tumbling down to the ground like bowling pins. For enemies that are using ranged weapons or particularly hard-hitting melee enemies, you might need to sprint to shorten or widen the distance between you and the mobs. However, sprinting will cost you stamina in this game, so be sure to keep a close eye on your stamina bar. The truly action-based combat system in Vindictus is really fun, in a brutal and bloody sort of way.

In addition to combat, these dungeons are also filled with traps and huge moving objects that you’ll have to dodge and avoid by timing their movements properly. If not, you may end up being riddled with arrows or being smashed by a large moving train coach. Sometimes, dungeons will contain several stages in them and you’ll have to complete all of them to complete the dungeon. At the end of the dungeon, you’ll also get a still (a screenshot) with 360 view of your character dealing the final blow. It’s pretty amazing and if you like it, you could even save the screenshot down.

Similar to Dragon Nest, you’re expected to replay dungeons in Vindictus for a variety of reasons, ranging from repeatable quests to material farming. These materials that you’ve gathered can then be used in the crafting system in the game to create armors and weapons of your own! Crafting is a great way for you to earn money in this game as you can sell most of the stuff you’ve crafted at the auction house. If you’re a fan of PvP, you’ll be happy to know that you can showcase your skills at the PvP arena as well!

Community

The community at Vindictus is very welcoming and friendly. They, more often than not, are willing to give you tips on how to play, if you only ask. There are many ways you can communicate with other players in the game (via chat or private message) or off game, such as the forums or the game’s fan page. Also, if you’re an avid PvPer, you’ll be glad to know that Vindictus has a robust PvP community to go with its amazing PvP system as well!

Graphics/ Sound

The graphics in Vindictus are gorgeous! The characters are all very well designed and the same goes to the game’s surroundings. Even the monster models are superbly rendered. Not to mention, the game also contains realistic animations with credible physics. So, for instance, if you hit a column with your broadsword, the column will come tumbling down in debris. In terms of sound, the game provides nice, though not very memorable, background music. The combat sounds are really awesome and the music matches the situation perfectly by bringing in an ominous feeling. Your character will also yell “hiyah!!!” and stuff like that with every blow he/she makes.

Conclusion

In short, Vindictus is an amazing action MMORPG that will certainly provide hours of fun for you to enjoy. Farming dungeons repeatedly might be boring, but its well-designed action-based combat system, along with the combo system, is more than enough to make up for that! Not to mention, the monsters in this game are challenging as you’ll need to know when to dodge and duck in order to minimize the damage you take – potions aren’t free you know! Collect crafting materials from killing monsters and create your own armor and weapons as well. You can then use them on your own characters or sell them at the auction house. Let’s not forget about the thrilling PvP arenas too. Sounds like fun? Well, you’re not wrong there! Give Vindictus a go today!
