We love how survival games have taken different shapes and forms. Back in the day, you would imagine them as something akin to highly-competitive titles like Rust and Conan Exiles or something a little more unforgiving like DayZ. Others, meanwhile, prefer a more cooperative approach, like The Forest and Valheim. The worlds they provide are extremely brutal, and it takes a lot of skill and strategy to try and survive.

In a way, Ultra Pixel Survive is akin to these games, but instead of a full 3D experience, it’s a 2D game with retro-style pixel art graphics. Don’t let its vibrant art and cute sprites fool you; it’s an extremely challenging game with lots of intricacies and grinding. It’s highly comparable to Terraria, although it’s not as comprehensive and devoid of the block-building element.

Plotline

The story doesn’t play a rather significant role in Ultra Pixel Survive; there’s no explanation as to how you got into where the game is set and why you’re in charge of defeating hordes of monsters. Nevertheless, you’ll be able to select from a few different characters and further unlock more as you progress.

Gameplay

In terms of gameplay, Ultra Pixel Survive could be closely compared to Terraria without the building elements. You’ll choose from a pool of characters with different skills and abilities. At the start, these are unlocked, but as you continue to play and survive more nights, you’ll get to unlock more of them. At the start, you’ll play as the adventurer archetype but will be treated to options like the lumberjack, fire witch, amazonian, ninja, and stone knight. Their differences include how they attack and their skills. For example, the adventurer can throw a devastating boomerang that damages everything in its path, while the fire witch casts fireballs.

Ultra Pixel Survive’s gameplay loop revolves around the day and night cycle. During the day, you’ll prepare your characters and your homestead for what will come during the day. This part involves much grinding by gathering materials and various resources across the game map. You’ll obtain wood by cutting down trees, stones and metal by destroying rocks, oil from black deposits, and food from the local wildlife. After which, you’ll then use these to craft materials and upgrade your gear (weapon, pickaxe, and axe) to strengthen your character’s capabilities. More importantly, you’ll be able to build defenses and other structures, like wooden walls, a forge, anvils, and torches, to help you cope with the challenges the game delivers. The resource-gathering and crafting elements are a little too grindy, and you’ll undoubtedly always be strapped for time.

Combat in Ultra Pixel Survive is relatively straightforward. To unleash your basic attack, you simply have to press Y. Though simple, the game implements a stamina gauge which means you cannot button-mash your attacks and have to wait for your character to recharge. Apart from this, you can press X to unleash a special attack, but depending on your character, this can have a relatively long cooldown.

The more you play Ultra Pixel Survive, the more gold, and gems you’ll obtain. These currencies are for upgrading your characters to make your next playthroughs relatively easier. Moreover, you’ll use the gems to unlock more characters. Note that most characters cost ten gems, so there’s a great deal of grinding required to get the job done.

Ultra Pixel Survive is solely a single-player experience with no multiplayer whatsoever. However, the game will sometimes give you companions who will aid you in combat.
