Summary

I've played a few visual novels before, but none quite hit the spot like Caffeine: Victoria's Legacy. Much like a well-made cup of coffee, it provides an excellent, well-brewed formula of humor, a stellar cast of characters, and a unique setting. Although we can safely consider it a classic visual novel, it delivers an impressive experience that may leave you raising your eyebrows and chuckling simultaneously.

Now available on the Nintendo Switch, will this isekai steampunk-inspired adventure be something you want to dive into, or not? Before you grab a cup, let's check out what it has to offer:

Plotline

Caffeine: Victoria's Legacy's story tugs the heartstrings. You will play as Taka Knight, a protagonist who is somehow close to breaking the 4th wall as he navigates around an alternate universe and interacts with the inhabitants. Transported into the land of Victoria after a plane crash, he'll then start his journey to becoming a barista.

Why a coffee brewer, though? First, let's put Taka's story aside and look at Victoria's lore. It is a land where caffeine, a psychoactive drug that helps us wake up in the morning or during slow days in the afternoon in our universe, is a somewhat mystical product. People drink coffee to recover their vitality quickly, and it reached a point where Victoria's inhabitants can wield and throw fireballs once they drink a shot of espresso. Moreover, though coffee is in plentiful supply, coffee beans are expensive and quite valuable, which is emphasized by a character you meet early on.

Because of coffee's relatively high status in society and culture, baristas are held in high esteem and are considered knights. Coffee shops enjoy widespread patronage from the ordinary people and the nobility. Plus, there's even a Coffee Academia where baristas learn their trade. Moreover, there are even coffee duels where participants throw fireballs at each other after cupping, which is the practice of determining where the coffee beans came from after drinking a cup or a shot.

It all sounds absurd, we know, but it makes for a rather enjoyable tale in a Victorian-era-inspired steampunk world. As Taka, who has a rather tragic story of his own, you'll interact with the likes of Alice, a coffee shop owner and pastry chef who took you in, and Eliza, a charming girl who helps you in your barista exam. These two are romanceable characters, and joining them are the serious Oceane and the headstrong Mel.

Gameplay

Caffeine: Victoria's Legacy plays as a visual novel, so it has little gameplay. Most of the time, you'll watch character sprites and animated scenes talk while reading the dialogue boxes at the bottom of the screen. When you reach specific points, you'll be able to make choices. Of course, these will determine the story, and some of the decisions you'll make range from staying late to help a certain someone pick coffee beans off the floor to how you'll respond to what other characters say.

Taka's personality, or how you want to make him sound, makes Caffeine: Victoria's Legacy so enjoyable. The dialogue options range from him being rather kind and serious to being flirty and abrasive. There were occasions wherein I could not help but laugh out loud and yell "ha!" at my Nintendo Switch due to some of the choices. For example, I made Taka say something in the league of "if this misfortune never happened, then you would never have landed in my arms," which made a fan favorite character blush. Well, hey, kudos to Taka's knowledge of our world and his expertise in dealing with visual novel characters since he references anime and games. In a way, you can decide his overall personality; in my case, I prefer to make him a bit of a jokester and not some clueless bland anime rom-com protagonist.

Graphics/Sound

In terms of presentation, Caffeine: Victoria's Legacy excels. The character sprites are fairly well-made and animated; they're not stationary when they talk and show expressions when you converse with them, which puts them on top of most of their peers. Meanwhile, some scenes are breathtaking, especially when they feature the four romanceable characters.

The voice acting and audio elements are nothing short of candy for the ears. The characters speak in a posh Victorian-era British accent, and some, particularly Concordia Stanley's, are sublime. However, the game isn't fully-voiced, which is unsurprising due to the sheer amount of dialogue. Regardless, many scenes are, and the amount will be enough to keep you happy.

Conclusion

Overall, if you enjoy visual novels, then Caffeine: Victoria's Legacy should be high on your list. It's a well-written tale with fun characters set in a rather intriguing and immersive world. Both the characters and lore building are presented in a way that makes things rather interesting. Although most of the concepts seem absurd at first, they grab and hold your attention as you continue to play. Plus, you can never go wrong with its overall art style and voice acting, which both exceed expectations.

So, grab a cup of coffee and start playing Caffeine: Victoria's Legacy!
